I've been in therapy for severe ocd and this is definitely not something you would do in therapy, it's a slow progression to things you're most scared of, and after doing it you practice waiting for longer intervals of time before you can do the compulsion-- in this case, washing his hands. Even people who had problems with germs wouldn't have to touch a public toilet and then RUB HIS MOUTH with potentially Dangerous bacteria on his hands, and then being forced to wait for an Hour before he's allowed to wash himself? Absolutely disgusting and dangerous, and being put into these situations can actually make a person's mental health even worse, which is sad cuz he seems like he actually really wants help. I hope he got the help he needed cuz this Dr. Guy is a hack. Anyways, still great video, just wanted to let people know this is not the correct treatment for things like this
I have also been in therapy for ocd and I’m surprised it was never mentioned he most likely has ocd. It’s such a classic case, despite the poor take on exposure therapy
idk i suffered medical traumas at a very young age from the malpractice of doctors which lead to severe medical ptsd, and i was forced to do exposure therapy at age 6 and they jumped from simple visits to the hospital to poking me with needles very fast... which only worsened it lol

as someone who has struggled with ocd my whole life and has continuously been in therapy to help control irrational thoughts/behaviors, this is not the approach
that being said im not a doctor im sure there are circumstances where exposure therapy is effective for people but it as far as i know it. Usually doesnt go like this

This isn't hypochondria, this is textbook OCD, invasive thoughts, contamination fears, incessant cleaning and washing. I have clinical OCD, and I know from years of my own suffering and problems that this man doesn't need a camera crew in his face reinforcing the hypochondria angle, he needs intensive outpatient or inpatient exposure and response prevention treatment. I know that it's easy to laugh at the hilarity of his behavior, and I think that we should all be able to do that, but invasive thoughts like these are real things that can tear you apart from the inside, and if you or someone you know acts like this or exhibits symptoms that resemble how outlandish and unreasonable this guy is being, just know that there is a story behind it, and you should try to get them the help they need, because being in an OCD prison of your mind is no way to live. I know firsthand. Also, I find it really funny and interesting that Noel actually pretty much hit it spot on with his analysis, the way that you deal with this kind of ocd is by throwing them in at the deep end and exposing them to the things they fear without giving them comfort or assurance (which is called reassurance seeking, and has to be ignored if the person is to get over their fears) so yeah, throwing this dude into a gay club with a bunch of blood would actually be a great form of treatment. He would obviously hate it, but it's what will help him the quickest.

OCD and hypochondria are remarkably similar but the main distinction is that OCD is obsession focused while hypochondria is focused on specific concerns that result in obsessive behavior. He is so focused on the specific concern of contracting HIV it results in obsessive behavior. While if it was OCD the source of his anxiety would be the obsessive behavior. “If I don’t do this, A, B, and C will happen.” Where as his hypochondria is focused on the anxiety of contracting HIV. “I will get HIV if I don’t do A, B, and C.” It’s a really subtle distinction as the disorders are so so similar and exhibit themselves in near identical ways. The main difference is just where the source of anxiety comes from. But I absolutely agree that the last thing this poor man needs is a camera crew in his face putting his disorder out there for shits and giggles. He is genuinely suffering and needs real help. For all the progress we have made towards mental health awareness people still lack basic concern and respect for the people suffering. It’s very sad to see. I have clinical OCD too, I’ve tried all kinds of support groups, met tons of people with varying degrees of OCD-no one who obsesses over diseases focuses on just ONE unless they have a connection to it (like a loved one dying or maybe they had it themselves and are terrified of recurrence).

He's not ignorant or homophobic, he has very intense anxiety and ocd. Those type of problems make you irrational and driven by fear. Doesn't mean he actually hates gay men, he just has major anxiety about something irrational. I'm speaking out of experience here.

It is, though. CBT has been a part of my life for 20 years and exposure therapy is real. It's terrifying and awful, but it works. Thank you for realizing this is a legitimate disorder and is NOT homophobia unlike a lot of people in the comments

@@ericac3 yeah but here's the thing: exposure therapy is the client's choice. Especially whether to do it the flooding way or the systematic desensitisation way. It was clearly stated that this was the guy's first session, so the therapist taught him no relaxation techniques, nothing. Nor did he give him a choice. That's messed up. Also, exposure therapy does not require unhygienic stunts that could actually harm your health.

I have OCD and used to be terrified of getting AIDS. I wasn’t scared of gay ppl though. I was raised by gay ppl so it would have been nuts to be scared of my parents and their friends. I more was scared I caught it when I’d had sex. 14 & 15 was probably my peak of the worst of my OCD and after a hook up I’d freak the fck out for months. My OCD has been in about 90% remission for years but health sht still scares me. Covid has turned my OCD up to 11, especially when dealing with groceries or touching the front door. I wipe my groceries down with bleach water and alcohol. My kid’s dad works at a grocery store and he can’t come over. My mom (she’s super high risk & disabled from a brain injury) who lives with us spiked a fever and it sent me into a panic attack for at least 48 hours. Anyways I feel like there def some obsessive sht going on for this guy.

I think a lil context is important tho, there was a big scandal in the UK when some blood transfusions in the 70s and 80s turned out to be HIV positive blood, which then infected those who had the transfusion with HIV. So his fear of HIV does have some legs, and obviously it's a shame its taken over his life how it has. Still funny tho.

It can definitely happen, although its extremely rare. My cousin was a hemophiliac and needed a transfusion and got hiv that way. That was in the mid 2000s . Plus this dude clearly has ocd, his obsessions aren't rational.
