I understand how we are all influenced by other artists, (whether they be writers, painters, or musicians)--we all have to start somewhere. I feel It's easier to pick out small chunks of solos when you can easily identify the resolving note at the end of the lick. It's a little easier with Rock and Blues licks but when you have fast metal riffs or transitions with time signature variations ( like Adam Jones does so often) , it's very difficult at least for someone without the theory understanding to sing those in your head before playing them.

    Un solo des soli mon gars,c'est de l'Italien,c'est comme ça

  • @lamontprospect9974
    @lamontprospect9974 Před 3 lety

    Maybe I'm way off here, but I only started playing about 8 months ago. I've learned all five Pentatonic shapes up and down the fret board, (forwards and backwards), and all seven Diatonic shapes up and down the fret board, (backwards and forwards as well). I love Steve's advice on how to "expand," "contract" and "combine" those scales to create something original. But I'm not going to waste time (or spend time) learning other people's songs and guitar licks. I write screenplays. I've also written a book. I can't copy other people's screenplays or books and put my name on it. I'd be sued for plagiarism. If I was going to play live, I would only do it if I could write original material. I want to create my own solos. I give a THOUSAND times more credit to any musician who goes out there and plays original material, (even if it's bad), than anybody who copies other people's music. Does it really take that much talent to play cover songs? It takes some talent, but nowhere near as much as doing or writing something original. Maybe I'm missing the point. To each his own. I see all these hot babes on CZcams perfectly mimicking all these heavy metal guitar licks or classic rock guitar licks. Okay, good for you. Do I wish I could do that? Maybe. But my question is, what can you do beyond just copying other people's solos? There's nothing worse in life than being considered UNORIGINAL.

    • @Guitarzoom
      @Guitarzoom  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for watching and commenting, LaMont! And if you want to play only original stuff, by all means, that is exactly what you should do! :-)
      But think about this: yes, it's true, if you copy somebody else's written work and try to pass it off as your own, that's plagiarism.
      But instead of focusing on books and screenplays (kudos on being an author, BTW!), let's focus on old-fashioned stage plays.
      It's true: if one person writes a play, then another person comes along and copies the play, that's plagiarism.
      But what about the actors performing the play? They didn't write the play, but without them... it really isn't a play. The play doesn't truly exist in its fullest form unless it is being performed, I mean.
      And even when it's being performed, when all the same lines are being said, all the same stage directions are being done, etc... depending on which actors are acting in the play, the play is going to be better or worse for the audience.
      I mean, acting in a play is not just standing up there and reciting lines. There's a lot more to it than that.
      Likewise, there's more to playing cover songs than just memorizing a few chords and lyrics. It takes skill to play a cover song on guitar and make the guitar part sound authentic. It takes a whole 'nother set of skills to sing, and it takes guts to go in front of people and play a song, whether you wrote it or not.
      And I am sure you're aware of this, but many times in popular music over the decades, cover versions of songs have become more popular than the originals.
      So, don't reduce your concept of "song" to the paper it's written on. That's just the blueprint, or maybe "recipe" is a better word. Because if you think a song needs a little more spice, all you have to do is add it.
      But to repeat, if you want to play all-original music all the time, that is exactly what you should do. :-)
      Just a heads-up, the special discount and bonuses for Steve’s brand new course Music Theory Made Easy 2.0 ends tonight.
      Go here for details → guitarzoom.com/musictheorymadeeasy20/promo/
      Whether you’re just starting out or if you’ve been playing for years, learning music theory can take your playing to the next level. Because you won’t just memorize some chords, or play a scale over and over a hundred times.
      When you learn music theory, you’ll discover how scales actually work. How scales generate chords. Why some chords sound good together and others don’t. And which notes to play to create the sound you want with your solo.
      Which means, you’ll truly start to understand how music works. So you can take your guitar playing as well as your songwriting to a whole new level.
      But the special discount and brand-new bonus courses disappear tonight. Here’s just a few of the bonus courses you get when you order now:
      ☑️ NEW! Fast Action Bonus #1: Steve Stine Live Lesson Library Vol 1

    Get all that....but....doesnt help know which notes to play? By ear you can guess at it but cant you combo tabs plus take the “chunk” and go from there?👍

    • @Guitarzoom
      @Guitarzoom  Před 3 lety

      Thanks for watching, David! And it does help to know which notes to play, or at least to know where a few target notes are, so you can start to connect the dots.
      A little after 2:10 in the video, Steve talks about looking at the structure of a song and finding a "chunk" to chop off and learn. Then, he plays a lick that descends through A minor pentatonic, but ends on an F note. And then he talks about how that's where an F chord is played in the song, so it matches up and sounds great.
      So, if you know what the chords are in a song, and if you know where the chord changes are, it isn't totally guessing when you start looking for the right spot to play a lick. You can find the root notes, and use those to find scale patterns, and use those scale patterns to figure out how to play a lick.
      And yes, you can use the "chunk" approach with tabs. Just be sure to listen then as well, and concentrate on getting it to sound right to your ears, so you can play solos more effectively and sound great.
      Hope this helps! :-)

    And here's just a little word of caution: There could be aliens from another world watching this video who Steve just referred to as "human beings." They may not like that.

    Again, (not to overstate the point), I don't care how well anyone can mimic another guitarist. In the long run, if you're trying to be famous or get recognized, you're not going to do it "copying" other people's material. Force yourself to do something original. Take a chance! Sure, writing or coming up with original material is DIFFERENT. IT TAKES A LOT OF GUTS. That's the whole point. Why do it if it's easy? Nothing worthwhile was ever accomplished taking the easy way out. You have to keep producing and the harder you work at it, eventually you will come up with something novel or original. I'm not going to put all this effort into playing guitar just so I can sound like somebody else. Okay, I'll stop. 🙂

    Beyond that, if you're going to copy someone else's material, why do LED Zeppelin? Everyone is so overly familiar with it, it's ridiculous. At least copy something no one's ever heard of. What do I know?
