    3:52 That's actually an illegal move. You can't place a meeple in a city if it already has a meeple in it, not even if it's your own meeple. I would know, I used to drive my friends crazy by connecting my little city (with a large meeple in it) to their cities.

      ADAM: Dammit, you're absolutely right. In order to put another of your meeples down, it has to be a 'new, otherwise unconnected structure'. If you end up connecting multiple previously unconnected cities into one big one, then you can still outnumber someone else's meeples and bully them off points, but I gave a bad example and I'm SUPER CROSS WITH MYSELF

    My french grandparents gave me a french copy of carcassone a couple years back and since my french isn't fluent I had a lot more fun playing with my half understood version of the rules where I made up the rule of what happens when 2 player's territory collides because once we found out the actual ruling my dad would spend most of the time trying to join other player's towns and leech off of their effort it was so demoralising I grew to despise the game even though he'd keep making me play it. This is why I love ticket to ride so much more because there's still ways to mess with your opponents but it doesnt feel like all your work is going to nothing because the guy who's beating you also profits from it, instead it forces you to adapt, see if you can find an alternate route to go where you need to go, or cut your losses and build a station to bridge the gap someone just forcibly made in your train line. And the mind games of trying to see where someone has placed trains to try to figure out which journey cards they have and where they are trying to go, so you can guess which lines you may be competing over is so much fun.

  • @BlueInkAlchemy
    @BlueInkAlchemy Před 3 lety +6

    A fine list! I'd also like to recommend Concordia as a great starter euro game. A relatively simple game of making trading posts, gathering goods, and making profit while outwitting your opponents and winning them over at the same time. It teaches a lot about hand management, there's a deck-building element, the mechanics are frictionless - i.e. nobody's ever completely screwed out of whatever it is they want to do, it might just get more expensive - and like a couple of the games on the list? MUCH better than Catan.

    • @Sci_Karate
      @Sci_Karate Před 3 lety +2

      I LOVE Concorida. I might even call it my favorite boardgame. But I don't think it's a good starter euro, and I definitely wouldn't call it "simple".
      I've actually had two different friends try it, find it too complicated, and write off euros entirely as a result.
      That said -- if you're planning to move up from "introductory" euros, like those in this video, I would agree that Concordia is a good first step upwards.

    • @BlueInkAlchemy
      @BlueInkAlchemy Před 3 lety +2

      @@Sci_Karate It's true that some of the nuances of the game can take some getting used to. That being said, teaching Concordia to new players has been one of the most smooth and enjoyable 'teaches' I've ever experienced, due to all of the actions being limited to cards in hand, and being able to describe each in turn and how they're related helped new players come to grips with the systems. That means I may have some confirmation bias when it comes to how simple it seems, and I'm glad you shared your experience!

  • @johnpotts8308
    @johnpotts8308 Před rokem

    I would add "Bohnanza" - each player has 2 or 3 fields (dependent on number of players) and has to plant as many beans of one type in each field (more beans = more points).The catch is that you cannot change the order of cards in your hand and cannot discard cards, so you have to dispose of that stray Runner Bean in the middle of your sequence of 10 Broad Beans by trading with your opponents or harvest at a serious disadvantage. It's simple but can get pretty cut-throat.

  • @justmike75
    @justmike75 Před 3 lety

    Love "Lords of Vegas" great pick... I would add Century Spice Road (Golem edition for looks). It is the best entry Euro entry I've seen. And if you add 1 or two of its sequels, you get games that actually combine and expand your other game- teaching more and more Euro mechanics that merge into new Euro-y games.

    Great list! Expected Ticket to Ride to be king, even if I consider several of the later versions such as Europe or Märklin to be far superior to the base USA version (no differentiating of long and short routes in the USA version can make for a really uneven game from the start.)
    A game I was hoping to see on this list but remained absent was Alhambra. A very Eurogame where you gather resources to buy buildings to construct your Alhambra, but there are different currencies that determine from which slot you can buy a building, so like Splendor you're competing with other players both to be the first to gather resources and to buy the score-generating thing you need.
    Additionally, each building has a set of walls, and you can only place a building in your Alhambra if the walls fit together.
    I don't think having dice mechanics is some automatic disqualifier from a game being a Eurogame considering the grandaddy of all Eurogames, Settlers of Catan, is very dependent on dice rolls for resources. The number of games I've had where a 6 never comes up should just not be possible...

  • @TheBT

    @xfoolsgoldx Před 4 měsíci

    Nice list and I own them all😎.
    I have gone full circle and have found Catan my favourite gateway that I actually love to play as well as introduce is Catan. It has been accused their is too much luck. Yes luck is involved but the better player wins 8 out of 10 games. If you are all as good as each other then it is a the most fortunate who wins. The trading is fun and the dice are fun but I admit can be frustrating. Saying that I dont feel Catan is more luck based than any on this list. I found going back to can a refreshing change from the majority of euro style games that are being released lately. Too many euros doing the ame mechanisms.

      @@martayharmay For me, I've had too many games ruined by the robber - it gets really frustrating, really fast if you spend a few rounds picking up no resources. A problem that Catan also has, in common with most games with trading, is that there an attitude among players who grew up with Monopoly where you have to 'win' a trade. You don't get many players looking for a fair deal in some groups and that harms trading as a mechanism for players trying to catch up.
      I replaced Catan with Compounded - I like the theme better, and players get resources every round, but the trading mentality thing hurts that game too

    I swear i used to have ticket to ride. Went to find it and it’s gone. I don’t want to pay £40 on Amazon for the European one - any suggestions where I can find it (without missing pieces in a charity shop tho)

      Don't. It gets old really fast and is only ever good for introducing new players to the hobby.

      @@maxp.4987 oh, I quite like it as a family game! I agree it’s good as an introduction but I do think as a staple family game it beats monopoly or uno. God, I’ve played enough Uno to last 500 lifetimes!

    "Carcassonne" is the perfectly normal way to spell it if you've studied just a little bit of French:)

    I like Eurogames, but the idea that they don't have a luck factor is wrong. Any game that has dice, cards, tiles or a spinning wheel has a luck factor.

    I have always hated this term because it doesn't mean a lot today and feels outdated ... to me... fe. Caylus which is a "eurogame" pretty interactive, far far away from peaceful and kinda thematic...not in a "i slay orcs in a dungeon" way but in a economic construction site logistics way.
    These terms are relics from the past with its categories easy Family/Kids game, card/board game from hundreds/thousands years ago, rules heavy RPGs/Tabletops/economic simulation and "the other stuff".

      I'd say Lords of Vegas has the best Monopoly feel that I know. You buy lots and build casinos on the lots and instead of it being a case of someone landing on your stuff, it's a case of you get paid if your stuff comes up. It also allows for trading/negotiating like Monopoly does. It beats Monopoly in my opinion due to having no player elimination, it doesn't go on for ages and it is more fun (imo). Only goes to 4 players though without the expansion.
      I'd choose this over Monopoly any time for playing at Christmas too.
      The Dice Tower have a video titled "10 Games Better Than Monopoly" that may be of interest to you.

    Didn't know these kind of games were called Euro Games... then I guess it shows how American I am that I've always hated these kind of games. Haha! Seriously, though, I have zero interest in any of them. Frankly, I don't see the appeal. Give me something like Mysterium, Telestrations, or Secret Hitler over any of these.

    Takenoko is clearly not an Eurogame, there is luck everywhere in the game ! It's a good game, but not an Eurogame at all.
