Maya: NURBS Modeling Basics

  • These days we are so rooted in the polygon modeling world that we sometimes forget about the NURBS world - which is, by all respects, more elegant because it lets you create mathematically lightweight complex SMOOTH surfaces. The car industry cannot do anything without NURBS, and game designers need NURBS as starting points before converting them to Polygons.
    In this tutorial I demonstrate the four fundamental methods for creating smooth surfaces from curves. Revolve, Loft, Extrude and Birail.

    i was using NURBS made a head and car in 2005, cant imagine that a long time ago.
    in that time period, SubD modeling pops up.

      Yep, I like NURBS, if that‘s what you mean. In the early days of Maya the Polygon tools were minimal; it was a NURBS program then.

    when I hold press C the snapping doesn't pop out :( I couldnot proceed further.

      you need to get a feeling for snapping. it‘s a bit tricky, but easy once you tried it several times.

      I don't know what you mean. All curves are visible in the viewport, unless you hide them or use the "show" selection in the videwport where you can hide all curves.

    great tutorial but still have a question. How do you control surface continuity when attaching 2 surfaces. This is something that would be useful control for automotive modeling.

      yes, almost the same UI, and the same tools, plus measurment tools for dimensions.
