Great memories for me too. Had just got my first bike,a KH 125 on the road the month before and seized it up going through Donington village. Embarrassing to push it there up the hill but well worth it. Luckily lived in Derby so not far to get home. Went to most races there in those days. First bike I ever rode was a Honda SS50 that belonged to a mate when I was about 14.

      Good on you Mike . In 1980 I had a air cooled RD 350 with a 400
engine and spannies . Went like stink but was prone to tank slappers
at high speed . 34 mm Mikuni carbs , ported barrels . Too light in the front .
I never owned an Elsie but bought a RZ 250 in 1984 . YPVS . It was nearly
as fast as the 400 engined RD but handled much better . I traded it in for a
1988 Yamaha FJ 1200 . Wonderful machine . I am an old man now and ride
      a BMW R 1100s , the second one I've owned . Great bikes , I have surprised
a few Fireblade and R1 riders on twisty roads that I know . Good fun.
Hope you are doing well . Cheers from Sydney .

Had just got my first bike on the road, seized it on my way to the track but it was well it pushing it up the hill going through Donington village. Luckily only lived about 10 miles away and my uncle managed to fit it in the back of his Ford Granada Estate to get home. Managed to get KR's autograph in the pit lane whilst Kel Carruthers and co. were working on his bike. Also managed to get Mike Baldwin's and Graham Crosby's autographs whilst sat near Bazza and Stephanie in the paddock. Two of my mates were marshalls (long hair on footage) and had to rescue Freddie Spencer from the gravel at Redgate! Well chuffed to see KR's last competitive race in Europe and many of the US team as not many raced here again other than in British GP.

The back of the pack was yanks on hot production bikes ! Remember Dave Aldana in full skeleton leathers, dumping it on the Brands long circuit and the bike just appeared from under the bridge cartwheeling wildly .Followed by a bouncing Aldana and a pile of dust. Mamola was just a coming privateer then .

The big bikes would get you on a long straight but if you were running a series of relatively short straights and lots of corners you could easily smoke much bigger bikes. My favorite has always been the TZ 500, they were freaking beasts. When you're in that zone riding a 1/2 '' of throttle with an insane powerband you had to know how to ride that's for sure!

@Skodaman2 well that came a little later. As far as I know the '85 GSXR 750 was an all new engine design, first Suku to use plain bearings, and first 750 to exceed 100 hp and they put if in an aluminum perimeter framed chassis based off the racing development. Actually, I would say all of these bikes influenced there street brother counter parts. The Honda Freddie is riding was highly stylized by the 4 stroke street version as the VFR1000R. A four stroke 1000 V4, with a steel perimeter frame. It was an awesome looking bike, but heavy and not so fast.

Those were the days! The US hasn’t had competitive racers like that in decades. So disappointing that we don’t have guys that can go across the pond and compete head to head with Europe’s best and win. I know the 4 stroke bikes of today have more power than the 500’s but the riders of then had more raw talent than today. Today’s bikes have too much power and have to be tamed by electronics to keep the riders from killing them selves. The 500 guys controls were their wrist and their asses. I’d rathe watch videos of the 500 years than watch live Moto GP races any day.

At the start of the two stroke era (ie the seventies) they all seemed to be like the four strokes of today and sit higher in the rear. They had full.factory NS jobs for sure and we got the "customer " RS , few special works parts ! The American bikes were like Rocket ships by comparison that weekend and watching them at the time I don't believe it was just down to gearing ! 🤔

Ahhhhhhhh, back when bikes were REAL!!! Not these highly computerized, electronic EVERYTHING,that can basically be ran by themselves WITHOUT riders aboard these days!!! THIS was back in a time when bikes still had functioning CARBURETORS,where tires could just barely LAST an entire race, and everything weighed TWICE as much as it does now!!! Lol.

These bikes were much lighter than today's MotoGP bikes.

    • @menom7
      @menom7 Před 4 lety

@@CC-xu2yz Uhhhhh,I hate to disagree with anyone on CZcams here my friend, but just where are You getting your sources from to claim that today's bikes are heavier than supersport bikes raced back in the 70's and early 80's? Because unlike racebikes today, that DO have more body-parts and fairings, etc. to them, those are made from very light carbon-fiber materials and the frames, suspension, the engine, etc. are all made from much MUCH lighter metals than what they had back in the 70's and 80's!!! Despite the earlier race bikes, not LOOKING as heavy as they were.......trust me........they were heavier!!! I'll even quote an article from the July 27th 2017 issue of Cycleworld magazine in which it says: " Today's 1,000cc sportbikes have more than double the power yet weigh 20 percent less than the well-loved classic sit-up literbikes of the 1970s and early '80s. " Now of course, they are talking about streetbikes here, not racebikes, but all race-teams know in MotoGP,.....that to win a race,You must have a race-worthy machine with top-notch equipment along with a top-notch power-to-weight ratio! Even if You have equal riders racing one another, the one who's riding the bike who's lighter (even if it's only a few ounces lighter) will usually take the victory! ~Peace~

The real transatlantic races were at brands, Mallory and Oulton, it was never the same in the 80s as it was originally in the 70s……..I lost interest when the septics dominated the change to donington races. No Sheene, Huwen, Mick G, lingham, Salle, sadly Dave Potter, Newbold, Heron etc had all died….never the same

they all natural had crossed body position back then. and they could carry the bike and the power to the world champ. . i don't see much reason if you are comfort with that riding position esp you are not doing professional . it's soft body avoiding position when you fall down. side body down vs chest and head down.
