    Fuji's 35mm f/1.4 looks to be a Sonnar design, which has a specific rendering and some of the most loved lenses happen to be sonnars. There have been many legendary sonnars.

    Great video! I just picked up this lens this week and although the sound is soooo old school, the quality of the photos are gorgeous. Shooting my first indoor family session next week and hoping this will be my main driver for the indoor shots, alongside the 23 f2 and then ofc the gorgeous 90 for outdoor, cause that is just in a league of its own 🙌🏽

    Well I believe one simple reason why people love it so much is that it has one of the best micro contrast (top5) of all Fujifilm lenses together with great close focus capabilities (0.28m with 0.17x mag), really versatile focal lenght (35mm), useful max aperture (F1.4) and small size. It's also well priced and fairly cheap, not around $1000 like many other best Fujifilm lenses.
    It is rare to have all these great things in one lens.

    Set AF limit to 0.3m to 1.8m combined with pre-estimating the distance between camera to subject will suppress the chatter sound a bit as it less likely to go crazy hunting for focus. AF limit + point at focal point in range.

    Hey dude ! so in regards to retouching (ex Lead editorial retoucher for Revolve/Fwrd here) are you exporting your files with that baked in fuji grain? if so i would try to process out without it and add your own later after you edit. I find multiple rounds of Dodge and burning then frequency separation to be absolutely key in retouching under what i call "hard data - grain, texture, etc". obviously you know how to retouch already but i would do a Freq. Sep at smaller scale and then a broader one later then mask it in only in the regions you are struggling with. Anyways if you ever want to chat about workflow just hit me up. Great vid btw, convinced me to pick up this lens for my newly acquired xpro2. Maybe ill get a taste of what your talking about soon enough haha

    I can't wait for your review of the 33mm, your verdict may influence my purchasing decision (no pressure). :)
    I'm hoping that the 33mm will have the same character and dreamy look as the 35mm, but I don't know if that's possible. From the small pool of comparisons I saw the 35mm seems to have a slight "filmic filter" whereas the 33mm removes it for a clearer image.
    I'm looking forward to the new 23mm though, I've been liking the images I've seen - maybe the wider focal lengths are better suited for a clinical look? I probably don't know what I'm talking about. :P

      I’m currently testing the 33 1.4 vs my copy of the 35 1.4 and the 35 f2. I’ll sum up my findings so far:
      Old 1.4 lens is notably softer, less contrasty, and exhibits plenty of chromatic abberation when wide open. By f2 it outpaces the sharpness of the 35 f2 with less overalls chromatic aberration than the 35 f2.
      The 33 1.4 is sharper, has better contrast, and has almost no visible fringing starting at 1.4. You get what you pay for. The differences (on the 40 MP XT5 sensor) are night and day.
      Next up (should be here early next week) is the Sigma 30 f1.4 vs the 33 1.4. I suspect it will be the second best lens in the normal prime lens shootout. Based on what I’ve seen so far, the ranking is as follows:
      33 f1.4, (Sigma - anticipated), 35 f1.4, and lastly 35 f2

    I think the problem with the new modern lenses and cameras is that they want them to be both photography and video tools at the same time, which makes them too big, too heavy and too expensive. That does not benefit mirrorless cameras, which should stay fairly small. I think they should start making cameras and lenses separately for video and photos. Well at least they seem to start doing something like that with XH-2.

      Im going to get one in my hands for a review soon... But from early reviews everyone likes it. Image quality is like the 18mm f1.4 LM WR so it's sharp in the center and corner as well. If you like that clinical sterile look the 33mm is great! I'm envious you purchased the 33.. 🥲🥲🥲

    • @awake780
      @awake780 Před rokem

      Seeing is believing when it comes to the 33 f1.4. Compared to the 35 f1.4 and f2 (which I am currently doing with all three lenses side by side) the 33 is in a league of its own wide open. By f2, the 35s are still not close to the 33 in terms of sharpness and chromatic aberration control. And that’s just in the Center. The corners don’t approach the 33 on either 35 until f4.
      Next up in the comparison is the Sigma 30. Should have some feedback by next week.

Lol I sold it a while back to downsize my kit also thinking I would be happy with the 35 F2 over it. But nope, I ended up buying another 1.4 when I found it used in a local shop. You are funny! I really enjoyed this video. I just tried the fuji 33 1.4 WR LM. I was on the fence between the 35 1.4 and the 33 1.4. I sent the 33 1.4 back. It is sharp, it has fast zoom, it is a solid lens BUTTTTTT it is "clinical". I just ordered the 35 1.4 because the way I see it, I am not shooting for sharpness. I am shooting to have images that stand out to me in a more film like look. Dare I say it, with "magic".
    I also bought and returned the fuji 18 1.4 LM WR for the same reason. The 18 is sharp and clinical. Instead I ordered the 16-55 2.8 fuji for the wide shots. For the price of the 18 1.4, I can get the 16-55 and yes it does not do 1.4 BUT at 18, 1.4 does not blur the background much anyways (because of fov).
    So my final kit will be:
    simga 56 1.4
    fuji 35 1.4
    fuji 16-55 2.8
    I think that will serve all of my needs.
    Eventually may also get the 50-140 OR fuji 90 f2.

      ISO 250-320 isn't high at all. Don't worry too much about noise. When I first started I was so afraid of it my ISO was always around 100, but that means my shutter speed is so slow most of the shots are blurry. A sharp but noisy photo is more usable than a blurry and clean photo. The XT4 is perfectly clean and usable up to 3200 for anything. If you're getting blurry shots, move your shutter speed to at least 1/250.
      I've been shooting cats and people at ISO 6400 every night after work, no issues with the noise. As long as the image is exposed right, it'll be ok. Let the shadows be shadows.

    Your miles may vary… I own the 35 f1.4 and generally like the image rendering. My two problems: on the 40 MP sensor, it’s softer than I would like it to be, and I simply can’t trust the autofocus to nail any modicum of subject movement.
    I photograph my nieces and nephews frequently, and I just don’t trust the lens at all. For still subjects, it’s still worthy of production. It’s arguably Fuji’s most characterful lens.

    As a wedding photographer and a previous Fujifilm shooter. I just don’t find this 35mm f/1.4 magical for my use. Even on a XT3/4, the lens struggles to autofocus especially under tracking or lowlight. Center sharpness is great wide open but corners are just ok, CA is not well controlled, lens hood is a must to avoid flare and lost of contrast when shooting into the light. For that, I chose the 35mm f/2 over the f/1.4 as my tool in my wedding kit. Video wise, none of the Fujifilm offerings are great. f/1.4 is too noisy and poor autofocus. f/2 the focusing breathing is horrible. Give or take, if you want an autofocus 35mm for video on Fujifilm, the viltrox is a better option out of the bunch. Looking forward with the 33mm f/1.4, I think it will be a great alternative!

    I am on the verge of getting my first camera (probably in a week) and I just cannot decide between an X100V or another camera and this lens. I want to just stop using my phone for photos and take any photo from my camera and carry it with me everywhere (which the V is perfect for) but videos like this... I just can't decide what should I do. I know if I get let's say an X-S10 and a 35 f1.4 I'll get lazy and won't take it out as much because of the size as I would the X100V... Any suggestions :(

    • @Iamtongue
      @Iamtongue  Před 2 lety +1

      That's a tough one man! If you're interest in photography is strong I would reccomend the xs10 becausse you can switch lenses and get a little more versatility. It just makes more sense to start out with something like that than the x100v. Although the x100v is a great camera it's also limiting being a fixed focal length. If you don't like it you can always sell it and buy the other one that's what I do all the time 😜

    • @newnastyn
      @newnastyn Před 2 lety +1

      I won't be helping you since I'll go the other way from what iamtongue suggested...
      The 35 is magical. One of my favorites, have had it for almost 10 years now. Will probably never sell it.
      But what has brought me to fuji was the original x100. With the tele and wide converter you have a 3 focal length solution that is great.
      But what has made me keep one of the x100 always is the size, and the silence. Of you never used one you will be impressed. No shutter sound at all. Very useful in the right situations. Plus can sync with a flash at any speed.
      I consider my x100 as an autonomous 23mm lens... When going out, it gives me the option of having a telelens in one of the x cameras, and my x100 to cover the wide side.
      It's an experience of its own.

    • @newnastyn

      @@Iamtongue i have never seen the effect you mention. Plus the 35 is not noisy, it just likes to hum appreciatively to you (yes it is my favorite, can not find any faults with it, or with it's longer siblings, 56 and 90).
      As for the gainyness I don't know how it can be lens related. I remember seeing somewhere someone testing shutter speed vs iso as a source of noise, so maybe there is something to it. But I don't know. But I do love the more environment portraits i get with it

    I would like to see an example of this lens vs another that you say results in skin issues. Generally skin issues are related to X-Trans. Some of them are due to noise reduction giving the skin a plastic look. The others are tied to the raw processor. Lightroom has a talent of screwing up Fuji images. Yes, I have heard over five times now that lightroom has fixed the issue. The truth is that the issue is not fixed. Not when you compare it to other raw processors. It has been reduced, however. I am not saying you are wrong, but would like to see what you mean with some examples.

    • @Iamtongue
      @Iamtongue  Před 2 lety +2

      I don't use noise reduction... I thought it was Lightrooms sharpening... So I've tested it where I would remove it entirely and these little "textures" would be there. It would be less apparent but it's still there... I have another friend who just picked one up and commented the same thing. I don't use other raw processor to comment if this is indeed an Adobe Lightroom thing.

    I can't help but feel that a majority of the sentiment related to the 35mm 1.4 lens is due to it being nearly a decade old and people having more time practicing with it. I promise I am not looking for trouble or to argue, but I have been struggling over what lens to get between the 33mm and the older 35mm F1.2 and I have heard a lot of debate over the character of the lens. However, when pressed to show what that means people will often defer to "it's impossible to describe" or provide images comparisons that I cannot for the life of me see what they are talking about. If the character comes from softness between the subject and the background, the shape of bokeh balls or fringing, can't we simply get this quality by shooting with the 33mm lens differently, or by making alterations in post? You would have the benefit then of having a sharper lens when needed, better focusing to land more shots when it's critical (children make this very hard), the potential for more poor weather shots and better low light photography.

    • @Iamtongue
      @Iamtongue  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey man. Yes you can make alterations in post. But that's just more work for you in post and for some people they don't know how to edit in post nor do they want to. They don't know how to emulate certain looks, some are the purists where they just want to get everything done right in camera. So this lens will provide that without having to spend hours learning Photoshop.. You see where I am coming from? Yes this look is hard to describe, just as like the full frame look is hard to describe just like the medium format is hard to describe. These are things you just gotta experience first hand for yourself. Thanks for watching 😊
