- On this fourth day of July, here’s The Cuckoo from my kitchen. One of my all time favorite English turned Appalachian folk songs. In my ears & heart, this is a freedom song through & through. 🔔
This arrangement is inspired by Rising Appalachia’s version, I especially love the fiddle part, so here’s me attempting to mouth-music it :) & i added my own last verse because i felt like there was a little more to say if ya know what i mean.
I’d love to sing music like this in a band one day, with fiddles and banjos and upright bass and stuff… one day !! In the meantime, let me know your favorite appalachian folk songs, i wanna learn them.
In the spirit of true liberation, let the dove fly. - Hudba
Damn, wasn't planning on falling in love today.
In the words of good ol Kurt, the bad Vonnegut; "so it goes", haha.
I had zero idea who this person was and I didn't expect anything special, with how saturated the Internet is with random amateurs.
... ummm, holy shit!!!!!
Your comment says it all.
This is one of the greatest versions of this tunes ever, and I love how it's just this person on their kitchen counter lmao. You slayed it ♡
@@meredithmoon ppreciate you :)
Beautiful version of this old song. In my version, the cuckoo is a male. "He sucks all the pretty flowers to make his voice clear, so he only sings cuckoo in the spring of the year."
I too fell in love
Gotta thank The Algorithm again. Beautiful
The lilting instead of a violin comes across like a songbird, which feels very fitting. I had never heard the song before and just assumed that was how it went - you've set the bar for me now, such an enchanting interpretation!
@@allisond4359 :))) much love!

SWEET, Love it, and one I don't know, yet sounded familiar. If you can find the time I'd appreciate you posting the lyrics. Keep it up and see where it goes, you have a great voice and an obvious passion for music! Give us more if you have them ☺
Oh the cuckoo she's a pretty bird,
she sings as she flies
She never gets lonesome
till the first day of July.
I've gambled in England,
and I've gambled down in Spain.
I gambled with five aces,
now I've gambled my last game.
Oh, it's gamblin' that's brought me prison,
And it's gamblin' that's brought me pain
I'll never see the cuckoo
or hear her song again
Jack o' diamonds, jack o' diamonds,
I know you of old
You robbed my poor pockets
of silver and of gold.
Oh the cuckoo she's a pretty bird,
she sings as she flies
She never gets lonesome
till the first day of July.
@@tuib Wado oginali, much appreciated!
@@KentuckyRedneck13 appreciate the encouragement! There’s lots of different versions of the lyrics, as with many folk tunes :) - the ones i’m doing here are:
Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
And she warbles as she flies
She never hollers cuckoo
Till the 4th day of July
Jack of diamonds, jack of diamonds
How i know you from old
You’ve robbed my poor pockets
Of my silver and gold
Gonna build me a log cabin
On a mountain so high
So i can see Whitlock
As he passes by
Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
How i wish she was mine
She never drinks whiskey
She only drinks wine
Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
And they’ll try and cast their nets
Jack of diamonds says a pretty word
And they’ll try and place their bets
But you can’t catch can’t catch freedom
So you may as well fly too
And you’ll never know what could’ve become
Of the choice you let fall through.
@@ultravioletarcher Thank you! I love the tune, started playing it right after I watched your video, lol!

@@diablofrench7735 :) last verse is:
Oh the cuckoo she’s a pretty bird
And they’ll try and cast their nets
Jack of diamonds says a pretty word
And they’ll try and place their bets
But you can’t catch can’t catch freedom
So you may as well fly too
And you’ll never know what could’ve become
Of the choice you let fall through.
