Am 51. I started my own farm 2.5yrs ago. Its not just young farmers watching. Lots of small farmers are second career folk that have always wanted to do this. Watching from Ireland â€
Absolutely! It's never too late to start. Good on ya for going for it. What advice would you have for the "older" generation who are looking to start?
Keep your crop types to a minimum and have your market well sorted. Grow a smaller number of crops well. There's very little difference. But perhaps we are farming with adult children and grandchildren?
ââ@@ryancullen6706Going on 53 and about to enter year 5 -- get into the right tools that make the physical efforts easier, sooner rather than later!!! Your joints, ligaments and muscles will thank you for an extra decade!!!
Pro tip- tillage tools, with some thought, understanding, and experimentation, can be used in a no-till/low-till context. Depth control and speed control to work the soil to the same level as hand tools would achieve. Save hours and hours and wear and tear on the body!
Glad to hear others in the same boat! I'm 40 and just starting off this year.
â@@ryancullen6706I'd love to hear the answer to this too. Southern United States.
Perfect slogan for a t-shirt, "SDFD - Slow Da F*ck Down!" Wise, wise words - THANK YOU!!!
This is a really great video gleaning 10 years of Ryans experience working closely with JM and various institutions to really dial in the most current paradigm around starting a farm and becoming a farmer in 2024!
Thanks to Ryan for the help and encouragement with my farm. These conversations really help me realize how important it is to keep pushing forward to make sure our communities are feed well!
@foragersfarns7030 - You're the best. It's been mutually inspiring following you grow your farm my friend! âđšâđŸ

**ANYONE thinking of traveling to stay at the old mill DO IT!!!! what an amazing place you and your crew have made! I know its looks amazing on the vids but to see in person! the people, the food, the atmosphere, the inn room, the green house, the plants, that beautiful little town, the agriculture rich area!!!! ummmmm wow!
if that's what u guys get up to in the dead of winter I can't wait visit durning the summer!

you can bet your buttons I will! Thanks agin! the seed has been planted!
to farm you are either crazy or brilliant, Its a job where angels fear to tread. A garden in every town and city is the goal. Over grow the system.
Hey mate ive read your book and i am on my own journey to starting my own farm i'm on 100 acres in the southern tablelands of NSW, Australia. Im excited and so glad ive discovered your youtube
Was very good conversation
Talking about the key points
Good job đ
Another good option is check out Curtis Stone's Urban Farming channel and book with info on how to farm on leased land. Also if you're younger you could start with something like a backyard nursery, which could fund your backyard garden, which could both scale up as you get older and more experienced.
Exactly. Great approach.
Iâm already rewatching this since I missed things while I was contemplating the examples. We are starting from scratch with bare property. Iâm curious what would be a good size wash & pack workstation area for 2 acres of growing?
I LOVE how JM has everything on wheels inside his wash/pack setup.
This is my dream.
You realy helped us just to try it and develop along the way, just finished our first season and it feels crazy đ being farmers and provide good products to people. That is for sure the why to US.â€â€
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Question though, How or can one have a small veggie stand/sell plants on there own country property and would you go about doing that or looking into that?
Curtis Stone the urban farmer always said, do it ask later!
Observe if others on you concession rd have a stand. On my rd they sell organic eggs road side. There is a lot of traffic in the area going to the nearest town with grocery stores and banks,
Keep your mind open to all available markets in your area. Is there ample traffic along your road for a roadside stand? Nearby weekend farmers markets worth attending? Small independent grocers worth supplying? Restaurants? Diversity can be a key to success.
Ryan is part of City of Greens, Bowmanville Oshawa area of Ontario.

Ryan why did I not find you before I bought my property. I'm a senior who just wanted to grow food!
I will try to visit your farm on my way to or fro from north of Brighton In 24 !
