  • I had a discussion with other repair technicians, remodeling contractors, and car restoration people about the unexpected surprises that are revealed when a customer procures repair and/or restoration services. Maybe you've heard the old joke about repair labor rates competent repair professionals charge on certain repairs...for example:
    Labor rates are as follows:
    (1) $50 per hour
    (2) If you watch, $100 per hour
    (3) If you help, $150 per hour
    (4) If you worked on it first, $200 per hour.
This video applies to number 4. The enormous amount of extra time it takes to do a professional, thorough repair job to fix and salvage someone else's screw-up are simply not appreciated by too many people that don't understand what it takes to undo "repair damage". Yes, "repair damage" is a real thing, and most often extra money is not asked for in order to keep the business, unless costly or rare replacement parts are required. BTW...I've lost my fair share of business due to really poor packing when an item is shipped and arrives broken...after detailed packing instructions were given, but not followed. Some customers just think they can simply file an insurance claim with the carrier and be done with it. If the carrier discovers that the packing was insufficient to survive the journey, a claim will be denied, and everybody loses.
My point is...Time isn't free. Extra repair time needed to correct someone else's mistakes is costly, and many times, unknowable until the tasks are satisfactorily completed, if even possible. We lose money. Other customers get delayed...everybody gets frustrated...and getting angry at me certainly doesn't make me work any faster to do a good job, because a good job can't be rushed or made to go faster. If you want it done right, it will take extra time. I do it right, or not at all, and anyone that takes pride in their work should agree.
    Happy 2024!
