The craziest thing about the video is the realisation of 2019 being 4 years ago.
Almost 4 years to the day since this card came out
Covid time was like a time warp..
Yeah bro it felt way to fast, crazy times
I always thought recent years went wayy too fast, glad to see i am not the only one.

Nah bruhhhh
I've done large parts of my PhD on the Radeon VII. We bought 10 of these at the price of 1 Nvidia V100 16GB, providing 10x the memory and performance. I've used them for computational fluid dynamics simulations.
Selling them when you’re done? They’re awesome for live visualizers like Magic Music Visualizer or Resolume.
What API did they use ?
Like how CUDA is on NVIDIA...
What is the response from AMD ?
@@xr.spedtech there is ROCm but is not as wildly adopted as CUDA
I've just ordered its professional sibling, called Instinct MI50. For $150. I have no idea why i may need this, but the price was too good to reject :)

One of the best looking cards ever....I think AMD should offer their top tier cards in a limited edition that looks like this, i.e. a 6900XT that looks like this, a 7900XTX that looks like this, and an 8000 series that looks like this
The card was never a great performer vs its 2080 competition, but 16GB of VRAM in early 2019 was amazing. And the red shrouded anniversary edition is one of the best looking GPU shrouds of all time IMO.
I remember thinking the 16GB had to be a typo or something back in the day haha
Not just 16gb but 16gb hbm 🤤
depends what you can bring out of the system in which you put it. I honestly lOl at the occasional bad mouthing of certain hardware limitations and under 60 fps nonsense. Ive always been able to get 60+fps @ 1080p on high settings first with my gtx 1070, now with my rtx 2060 inside an aging 4th gen i7 setup. I read somewhere that comparative benchmarking is a sham, and should be taken with a pinch of salt. A simple way to test games is to switch up hardware, putting together odd configurations and stress testing them. Windows is a b***h too, as are certain in game engines.
@@mattBLACKpunk HBM2, even.
Hbm2 at that...which was so dumb lol
I've always found this era of Radeon cards to be so stylish. They really do look so well designed, like they should have a bookshelf of industrial/commercial design awards.
Hey the Radeon VII! This was my wife's GPU back then until she upgraded and she had a love hate relationship with it. It played pretty much any game she had at 1440p, but she had driver issues constantly. Looking forward to seeing it again.
Bro really got the gamer girl all the fortnite kids dream of
its better then a 1080, why upgrade

Driver issues? AMD? NEVER 😂

It's bizarre to me how this card delivers RTX 3060 performance in some titles yet greatly exceeds it in others. The performance variation is wild.
Almost like the A770? *X-Files music*
This card really shines with dxvk and vulcan. I have pushed mine to the extremes and still kicks strongly in a ton of games. Personally I think most of the problems the card had was not being fully utilized with the drivers. It's a whole different beast under a vulcan api with around 35 to 50 percent in performance.
The 3060 is way faster in some, notably Cyberpunk, the RTX card can hold 75 on high, this can't even hold 60 on medium.
@@hungrymidget3896 Not true, lmao. A 5700 XT is faster than a 3060, and a Radeon 7 is faster than a 5700 XT
@@raresmacovei8382 The 3060 is factually a lot faster in Cyberpunk.
The Radeon VII! I used to have one from late 2019 to early 2021. It definitely felt inefficient, all things considered, but it was cool to have! I ended up selling it for double the amount I had paid for it, so I was happy with how it ended for me
you sell it when the mining become popular?
Beautiful card, kinda crazy it has more VRAM than a 3080
Amd always was mire generous than nvidia in that regard... Even back in 2013 with the 290x 8gb model... Best nvidia had was 780 ti 3gb... They also had a 780 6gb but slower
@@nicane-9966 Nvidia is way too stingy with vram, to the point that they only give you more for SKUs that are otherwise too easily beaten by the AMD equivalent, such as when they increased the VRAM on the 2060 and 3060, but not on the higher end SKUs. The 3060 12GB had more VRAM than all of their GPUs up to 3080 Ti and later 3080 12gb.
It's because it's a data center computer card with a gaming cooler on it
@@deepspacecow2644 that's quite literally the same with nvidia though, they just put smaller ram chips on the cards and give them different drivers and higher clocks

Will u hug my fluffy batty?
Wasn't too long ago, especially for a flagship card. My 2080 still games great, so this thing should still be solid, driver issues aside
@@armando1is1great Back in the day, I hated AMD because of drivers. For some reason though, in 2018, I switched to AMD. Started at RX580. Then to 5700XT to 6700XT to 6800XT. I play a ton of games. Probably too many. I have had no show stopping driver bugs TBH. I know some people had black screen issues with HDMI a few years ago on the 5700XT. That was patched out by the time I got to that card. I do remember reading about Radeon VII having problems at launch though.
@@F1neW1ne yeah to be honest though all cards have problems at launch it is just a thing that happens that is why i for the most part don't get any thing new first day i always a few months before doing it just to make sure all the kinks are out.
Man, what a clean and good-looking card, still one of my favorite designs
The noise might be remedied by changing the thermal pad with thermal paste and use the washer mod. Currently have a Radeon VII on water so i've not tested the stock cooler in ages
I did the same mod to my 6800, and it’s 10C lower edge, and 7C lower junction.
If the fans bearings are the issue no thermal paste will help
When i saw those fans of Vega 7 in 2019 i knew it would be shrill. But such cooler mistakes are common for reference Radeon cards. Reference Vega 64 actually was not a bad card when you fixed AMD's mistake, which was thermal rather than noise pitch issues. Dremel bracket airflow mod plus better thermal paste stopped most of the clock throttling while retaining the soft woosh of the stock fan curve.
This card is really torque-y if that makes sense. Can't really do 1080p 100fps+ in most games, but boy will it chug through games at 4k while maintaining a smooth 60fps. Probably all the Vram...
i love the radeon VII not because of it's preformance, but because of how cool it looks and how interesting it is with the hbm and being the first 7nm gpu.
same how i love the amd fury because of just how unique it is. i am currently running an r9 nano in my pc, and it runs all i want it to run. i love that little card with all it's power
Damn I miss my r9 fury nitro 😭
i rememeber my oncle having a saphire r9 fury damn that thing could mine and heat the room... he bought it for i think 200€ mined 6 months and sold it again for 200€ good days. but that thing was a beast, massive gpu.
you're a person after my own heart. Even if I get less frames I enjoy each frame more when I know I'm squeezing them out of some sort of funky card. Same reason I stuck with a watercooled r9 fury for a long time.
Would be nice to see a follow-up video with the GPU undervolted and using Nimez Drivers (resizeable bar+RDNA driver optimizations) since that provides a boost in modern games.
Yes an updated tuned run would be very interesting, please do this.
The stuttering in newer games is caused by devs using UE4 and DX12 without compiling the game's shaders at the start, like they do with consoles. That leaves the GPU to compile the shaders on the fly, which is way slower than having them saved in the system. The only fix is that devs patch their games to compile them at the start or maybe Microsoft can forced them when using DX12.
Not the GPU, Unreal Engine compiles shaders on the CPU using the DirectX Compiler (DXC) or the HLSL Compiler (HLC) and it's done as part of the asset pipeline.
Thanks for covering the GPU I am currently using!
You could have tested the Amernime Drivers as well in order to activate SAM - in some titles it really gives you the edge especially in 1440p =)
Legacy SAM/ReBar works with official drivers too, no need for custum ones.
just paste this code in notepad and save it as .reg (not .txt)
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4d36e968-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}\0000]
"KMD_EnableReBarForLegacyASIC"=dword:00000001
"KMD_RebarControlMode"=dword:00000001
"KMD_RebarControlSupport"=dword:00000001
run, and add it to the registry, restart PC, enjoy 5-15% more fps.
Ayo LyGhT, Gex from Disc here! Completely agree try NimeZ drivers, really transform the card.. don't forget to undervolt!
I love seeing these rare beasts show up, and I totally get the collector’s item feel to it. I bought an r9 Nano a few years back for the same reason since I always wanted one back when they first came out. Great video!
I used to watch you years ago and you had like 30k subs, and now about to hit 500k, awesome bro
I bought this GPU on launch ($700) and was able to buy a 6900 XT and pocket $500 by selling it during the mining craze. I'll never be able to do that again.
Vega 64 and radeon 7 were my dream cards. Upgraded from an rx580 (less than 200) to vega 64(£220) and the difference felt huge. Both bought new. Then after a month of buying the vega I've seen a new radeon 7 for £500. I was so pressed to buy it but i didn't. I'm glad that i didn't as for that money i bought a 3070ti last year. But amazing cards. They were good enough
yeah same the vega 56 and vega 64 and radeon VII where those cards i always dreamed off but they disappeared befor i could try and buy one and then mining came and there price went crazy high, it was that wierd gen of cards that launched and then went quiet and disappeared...
You're probably hurting right now tho with that paltry 8GB of VRAM.....
@@PoweredByLS2 yes and no. So at first i was a bit upset about it but then i remembered how huge my backlog is anyway. Also i thought about it and realised that in the future i can move this 3070ti in my itx and get a better card for my main rig.
But if i do that i obviously need to move this huge rig downstairs if i have a 4K tv or get rid of the 1080p monitors and get a 4K monitor...
So it isn't the end of the world. Besides i have 3 other devices to play on so.... most likely the 3070ti will die before i will feel its obsolescence as i don't play new games. I still haven't tried witcher 3 because i lack the time... i have red dead 2 installed since December 2021 and i am still at chapter 5... i wish i could play more but yeah...
Edit: adult life sucks but tending to responsibilities allows me to have all this tech. Hopefully i will have a kid that can use all this to its full potential and wear it out earlier so i can get new tech without feeling guilty for hoarding tech and not using it
@Barbus Bogdan Oh geez, your reply just hit me hard. I just upgraded to a shiny new 6950XT and 850 Watt PSU to drive it in order to get more FPS on my games that I rarely play due to life getting in the way. Haha
@@PoweredByLS2 yep that is the truth. It is sad but i guess this is what life is and if we want to live up to a certain standard and achieve some goals we need to play less and dedicate our time towards reaching those goals.
On the bright side i could always build a PC with the 3070 performance and be more than happy with it haha.
Almost at 500k bro! keep up the great work:)
Thanks you m8 for your effort making all this epics videos.
Fun fact: In Steam games on Linux, you don't get the DX12 and Vulkan shader compiler stuttering, because Valve distributes prefilled shader caches as part of their their SteamPlay project (the specific tech behind this is fossilize).
I know this is a gaming channel but it's probably worth mentioning that this card has 1:4 rate Double Precision compute resulting in 3.36 TFlops of FP64 compute performance. This is one of the best cards for Milkyway@Home if you're into volunteer computing.
I remember asking for this such a long time ago. so excited :O
Ah man I absolutely loved the look of this card! I wish more GPUs went with this simple yet sleek styling
This is a nice looking card, love the design! Performs well too, but others are faster, quieter and use less power... But I have 2 Vega 64 cards and the driver issues I had lately make me wonder if I really should go for the RX6800XT what I had planned!
Bought this card on release. I still use this card. And they kept updating it frequently until 2023. Also AMD said they still have an update eventually just not as frequent anymore. It was definitely a beast card for it's time and is still a decent card to this day for 1440p games. Just saving up for the new gpus now but not having to upgrade for basically 5 years was a good investment in retrospect. Plus I get the added historical reference factor that this card had during it's hey day which was the crypto currency boom and bust. Meanwhile I just used mine for gaming. Probably going to put it in a display case one day once I build a new PC.
I've waited so long for you to review the radeon vii, it's one of my wishlist, great video 👍🏻
Thank you, it’s been on my list for a while too
FINALLY.
Ive been waiting for years for someone to re-visit it.
An absolute unique card, I'm looking forward to testing it in the next new titles. In terms of this card volume, maybe the card needs a new thermal paste on the core? Just be careful with cleaning the thermal paste around the HBM2 memory, it's easy to damage the connections, it's better to leave it and wipe only the very top, just like on the core.
It doesn’t use thermal paste. It uses one of those thermal pads and a vapor chamber.
@@_B.C_ The Radeon 7 has memory chips in the gpu core, right next to core, so it uses the same thermal paste as you normally use for cpu and gpu.
@@werwito6723 not true. It doesn’t use thermal paste. Watch the gamers nexus tear down.
@@_B.C_ Its true, i think they use graphite or something like that for the core and Thermal Pads for the rest. I was pretty surprised at the time to use something else than Thermal Paste.
I so want that graphics card 😃
I was happy with my Radeon VII. I love the minimalist design, it is beautiful. Funnily enough, a couple weeks after I bought mine, they announced the Anniversary edition. I was tempted to do a return and get the red one.
I feel old everytime i see your reviews, thank u.
if you plan on keeping longterm , i would suggest replacing the thermal pad use on the main gpu with another or possibly thermal pasting it , since the card trends to run hot .. mine has overheated a couple of time in RDR 2 (was running at a rez of 3440*1440,with evrything pushed to maximum in video settings )
I recently installed a Morpheus II cooler on mine, and it stopped overheating completely.
I bought one, when AMD introduced something newer, so I got a discount. I use it for editing 4K and 6K movies. I capture in Blackmagic Raw, and use DaVinci Resolve. The 16 GBy Video Ram makes for smooth scrubbing, plus very quick export.
what codec do you render in?
Oh you've finally got it. That's a seriously beautiful card right there
I always wanted one of these as well. It’s just something about the way it looks that was always striking. Hell I think it looks better than the reference 6000 series if you ask me.
This card was just AMD prototyping a new cooler while simultaneously using up reject silicon from expensive datacentre gpus. remember prior to this they were using blowers on all their reference cards. also this card responds really really well to watercooling and undervolt/overclock similarly to the vega 56/64
Loved my VII, I had replaced my old Zotac 1080ti with a VII after my 1080ti's third RMA. The card did great over all and even better when I water blocked it with EK parts. I ended up getting a 6900XT and putting the air cooler back on the VII it sat on my shelf for a year or so as I really liked it as a collectors item. Eventually it went to a friend in need who had no gpu in their build. I havnt seen it in forever, but I know its serving someone else and not just sitting. I hope to get it back one day and return it to my collection. I do miss my VII.
i've wanted one of these since they came out, but only recently was able to acquire one. So far i love it
Don't know why but I've always loved these.
There is a way to get Sam enabled on the card. I just did it now on my radeon vii. Basically you download a registry and it enables it on amd official drivers
I was wondering about it. It might need a revisit on another video.
How does it fare on your side ?
@RandomGaminginHD are you aware of the registry tweak on guru3D forums ?
@railpao so far I'm still testing my games. Halo infinite I did see benefits for Sam. I got about 8 more fps in the campaign. I went from 67 fps to 75.
@@bryanwages3518 Interesting. It might help on the 1% and 0.1% low too.
Have fun with your testing
The stuttering in modern games you mentioned is due to DX12 shader caching. Depending on how it was created, the game needs to build and cache shaders to your drive. Some games do this the first time you boot it up, other games don't... And that's why you see the stuttering. The game is having to load and cache shaders on the fly, causing pauses. If a game has DX12/11/Vulkan support, you will only see the stuttering in DX12.
Yay! You finally got one! This was my first ever GPU I owned in my first PC build back in early 2019. It was an underrated GPU imo (I'm now on the RX 6950 XT though)
Nice find 🙌
If you could next time test it in RTS games, something heavily computed that might be what this card could shine in
no reason not to test it next week on COH 3
You should do the Vega 64 card it’s price is only around $100 now!!! It could be an insane budge card!
It seems to be a trap. Those things chug power and were the best miners in 2 mining booms. They most likely are on their last legs.
Cheapest in the UK is £140. About the same price as a GTX 1070 Ti.
Flashed vega 56s way better as they use a lot less power for almost the same performance
What a great piece of tech! Now it’s nice VRAM makes this a keeper if you still own one. But I had to mod mine, was too loud!
My brother is running one of these. Bought it brand new and has been happy with the performance. He has his undervolted.

This card costs much more than other options that provide the same (or better) performance (5700 XT, 6600, 6600 XT, RTX 3060, etc.), while using a lot more power and not being powerful enough to make much use of the 16gb frame buffer.

My Vega 64 at 2560x1080 did great, however at 3440x1440 it struggled. Owned my GPU for 5 years then bought a 7900 XT to match my 5800x3d.
P.S don't daisy chain pcie cables, my Vega 64 had issues when i did that.
Does changing the thermal compound improve temperatures? I had great success with certain "loud cards". It often turns out that the thermal paste is well, not very good - to say the least.

Thanks :) I’m a big fan of zwormz myself too
I have a collection of the high end Radeons from 2002 to 2009(or 9700 Pro to HD 4890), I really like how they all look, but man, the VII is in my top 5 of good looking graphics cards, and if I had the money and shelf space, I'd definitely have that as one of the highlighted ones :D. Great video btw!
I loved the 200 series OEM Nvidia cards.
Would be interesting to see performance differences if you do the registry edit to enable SAM for the VII.
thanks for the video - i still own this card and only used for gaming until now. I'm playing Cyberpunk at 3440x1440 without a lot of problems, but i'm using FSR quality with high preset and getting around 60fps all the time. (FSR helped a lot, very unplayable at release with my resolution)
There are some ways to undervolt the card and optimize fan speeds, with this it gets much more silent)
I've always wanted one of these
Gorgeous looking card😍
hello random, how are you? I love your videos they are amazing. I've been following you since 2018, greetings from Paraguay
Provided you can cool it, that card can actually overclock decently as well. I managed to get 2100MHz+ out of it with a relatively middling Bykski block, so that's an additional 15-20% more performance out of it when you combine it with a memory overclock
Still got mine watercooled from the first day new, never overclocked runs like champ.
You can get the TDP down to 180 watts for the same exact performance. You can also get graphite pads to cool it better and the fan won't go above 40%
Nice card, good find
What driver version are you running on this card? Is it the latest one?
I wanted this card so much when it came out. It was like RAW power but in a chaotic unstable way that couldn't produce drivers to tame it correctly. Stil a beautiful looking card.
Oi mate. Mind trying it with the NimeZ Custom AMD Drivers!? I am curious if this puppy gets it full HMB2 potential unlocked
I recently picked up 2 of these, had to for my collection.
Such a RESPECTABLE video.
😂
got 1 for $150 last year, has done me wonders but is there any way to make it quieter (other than undervolting) like any fan mods? Is there a way can increase airflow but make it quieter a the same time, while keeping the original gorgeous shroud (noctua type shi fr)
Can you try it out with some modded drivers, like the amernime zone ones?
I have really been debating on getting one. I use a 2009 Mac Pro and for that reason for compatibility in macOS, I need a Vega or Polaris card. I have an RX 590 and it does great, but until I can afford to build a dedicated PC for gaming, I figured one of these would be my best choice. Thanks for posting this, hogwarts legacy and CP2077 were the two games I was mostly wanting to see this card in.
your voice calms me
Did you get a new camera, or did you just take more time to render the video in 4k? Either way, it's very nice :D
Edit: I just noticed that it's because you actually ran some games at 4k, but even 1080p footage looks better on youtube when presented as "4k" or "1440p" because it gets higher bitrate
Nice little undervolt will sort that cards noise out or enabling Radeon chill,
I think you did a typo in the description, is "descontinued" not "discounted". btw mine just stays 60fps perfectly on CP2077 1440p High on Linux. Nice video man.
I recently received a Vega56 to test, but after a 3-6min of high load it gives corrupted display, blacks out and then hard-locks. I have replaced the thermal paste & thermal pads carefully afterwards and even though temperatures dropped, it still hard-locks. There is no visible damage on the circuitry.
Love the design of the card.
Love that you always pet the cat

I remember when they announce that card I really really wanted it because of the hbm2, they are now next to possible to find
I've got the 5700 XT you mentioned. It's a great card after watercooling it to make it stable!
I remember wanting this card to upgrade from my GeForce 1080. Keep it safe 😀
I own one the anniversary edition in red/gold color instead of the silver like the base. Looks so good imo.
