    I use two full-frame lenses on my Sony a6700, the Sigma 24 mm 1.4 DGDN and the Tamron 28-75 mm 2.8 G2, and the only Apsc lens I use is the Sigma 16 mm 1.4, and I'm covered with a good range.

      I just got the 6700 and the only lens I’m rocking right now is the tamron 28-75 g2. I was using it for the Sony a7iii when i had that so the 28mm was decently wide enough for me. Now that I have the 6700 that 28-75 turns into a 42-112 which I’m actually happy about since I wanted a longer range but for sure I’m going to soon invest in a wide lens and so far I’ve been considering the sigma 16 1.4. I know this lens is an older lens but does it perform well with the 6700?

    I’ve been shooting Sony APS-C since the A3000, then A6000 and currently A6400 since its release. Have been mixing FF and APS-C lenses early on which has worked great. Looking into getting a FF camera as well. Thinking about the A7C II, although I think I’d like a bigger body and bigger EVF so most likely will wait for an A7V to be released at some point. Although lower resolution photos I’ll be using my APS-C lenses on my future FF body using crop mode. Great for video without any resolution loss.

    That 1.5x crop still affects the apsc lenses, your 18-50 is a 24-70 its x1.5, 10-18 well thats 15-27, or similar to your standard wide 🤷🏻‍♂️
    My fav FF lens on apsc is if you want some little primes, the 24,40,50 f2.5 g lenses end up being, 36, 60, 75 which is quite close to having a 35, 50, 85 🥳🥳

    The size differences on those lenses are nothing short of wild! Probably the biggest thing keeping me on APSC. I used to be a full frame canon shooter, but the advancements of apsc mirrorless have gotten so good that I switched! Hard to justify the size and price unless you are making serious $ from the craft.

    I have one doubt I understand that crop factor applies for focal length, but how about the aperture? Does crop factor apply to aperture on full frame lens on apsc cameras?

    Thoughtful topic, well illustrated, Curtis! Clever “lens shake” bit.
    Most vintage lenses (from 35mm film cameras) are “full frame”, an economic way to go (although manual focus) but lighter than auto-focus.

      We get the same amount of light to the sensor. Then it depends on what the sensor makes out of it. FF appears to be one stop better in terms of ISO noise, yes. So a F1.4 on APS-C matches the FF F2.0 in low light conditions. In return: F2+FF does not give much of a clearer image compared to F1.4+APS-C, under low light conditions. Which I find funny.

    I've mixed feelings about this video, Curtis. Let's say I bite the bullet and get an 50mm F1.4 for full frame and use it on APS-C, instead of going with the 56mm F1.4. For my upgrade to full frame, I would still be missing a lens that gives me that 75mm field of view, and I had to buy it, as I'm so accustomed to the look. So I would have bought an expensive, heavy lens, but when switching to FF I either have to change my habits, or get an additional lens. I see no bonus there. FF lenses on APS-C make sense when there's no equivalent APS-C lens available, yes. But the APS-C range nowadays is pretty solid, we are mainly missing equivalents for fast 135mm and 70-200mm lenses. While we could use 85mm lenses for the 135mm look, there's no proper offering for the 70-200mm equivalent (except on Fuji).

    • @CurtisPadley
      @CurtisPadley  Před 3 měsíci +2

      That's some fair point mate. Could not agree more that the APS-C line is so well supported with lenses. I did make this point in my video. Stating: that most people would be better off buying ASP-C lenses because they are so much lighter and cheaper. But again it really comes down to each creators approach to making content and what they require. So what may not work for you, may work for someone else.

    I’ve never thought about this before, so I don’t know whether it’s a stupid question or not. Are APSC lens focal lengths essentially the same as their full frame equivalent, or are they a scaled to the APSC sensor? If that doesn’t make sense, what I’m trying to get at is: assuming a APSC lens could be used on a full frame camera without cropping in, would it still be the same focal length?

    • @HollowPoint93
      @HollowPoint93 Před 3 měsíci +1

      For example 35 mm APSC lens and 35 mm full frame lens are always the same 35 mm. Only the equivalent changes, not focal length.

    • @vex1on488
      @vex1on488 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Apsc lenses are still a different focal length. My sigma 16mm on my Sony A6000 is actually 24mm because of the crop. It is the same with every single apsc lens. My 50mm is actually a 75mm because of the 1.5x crop. As I said the same with every single apsc lens

    • @jhirse3547
      @jhirse3547 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Same focal length, yes. But the APS-C lens would not cover the fullframe sensor. It is literally cropped.

    • @CurtisPadley
      @CurtisPadley  Před 3 měsíci +2

      Not at all Ryan, it's not a stupid question :) So essentially any APS-C lens you attach to an ASP-C lens you still have to apply a 1.5x crop.
      So as an example an APS-C prime lens like the 16mm is actually the equivalent of 24mm on APS-C cameras
      Another example, the Sigma APS-C 18-50mm is the equivalent of 27-75 mm on APS-C cameras. So no matter the ASP-C lens you always have to time the focal length by 1.5.
      Hope that helps Ryan, have a great evening.

    • @CurtisPadley
      @CurtisPadley  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Hello, so basically the 18-50 is a zoom lens which means it's more versatile in a wider array of shooting scenarios. The Sigma 23mm is a fantastic Prime lens but you can only use one focal length. So if you want the flexibility of having a larger array of focal lengths at your disposal check out the sigma 18-50. I have also done a video talking about this lens on the channel. Follow the link if you wanna check it out. Hope that helps mate :)

      I tested a Sigma 24-70mm on A6400. I returned it because it's too heavy. I shot two identical images using a Sigma 18-50mm at 50mm and Sigma 24-70mm at 50mm. Both came out identical in terms of FOV so I don't get the 1.5 crop factor stuff on the 18-50mm lens.

    • @CurtisPadley
      @CurtisPadley  Před 3 měsíci

      @@whereisjohnnowHi John, so to answer your question. The reason both lenses looked identical is because the focal length were.
      As well as having to time Fullframe lenses by 1.5x the same principles apply for apsc lenses.
      So shoot 50mm with the sigma 18-50 on APS-C it's the equivalent of 75mm.
      Shoot 50mm with the sigma 24-70 on APS-C it's again the equivalent of 75mm cause we have to times that focal length again by 1.5x.
      Hope that clears things up and answers you question! ✌️
