Electric Bird It would make sense because at the time when the Empire State Building was built most elevators were manually operated. I don't think they began making them all automatic until the 1940's or 50's.

They stripped this elevator out and modded it, the relay logic and motor are now on display on the 102nd floor

@@EWPA14 I went to the 86th floor observation deck and this lift was getting upgraded.
I think they installed a whole new elevator. Not sure if this still exists but if it does it's not public anymore.
