  • Soprano Mary Bevan and theorbo player Elizabeth Kenny perform Lagrime Mie by the famed Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi. Strozzi was one of the first women to have her music published in her own name.
    Watch them perform it as part of our concert devoted to Strozzi's music at Kings Place, on Thursday 10 January 2018: www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on...
    The concert is the first event of Venus Unwrapped, a year-long celebration of female composers at Kings Place: kingsplace.co.uk/venus

    The dynamic range or the recording seems a bit narrow, like they recorded at a low mic volume to cut out the noise floor instead of just removing it digitally or using a Dolby system. Excellent performance and great dynamics from both the performers. IT just needs some engineering to make it sound like it did live.

    I absolutely love this piece, but it seems that the vocalist used a very modern approach to this piece rather than a historic one. No trillo or any glottal articulations, along with a lack of changing affect and modern use of vibrato. I’m Kind of sad that the performance wasn’t historic considering the CZcams channel, orchestra, and ideology that seems to be represented.

      @@mikeycage1587 OP doesn't need to be a professional vocalist to detect when something is inaccurate. For example, I've never painted a painting myself before, but I can tell a bad copy of a Van Gogh from an original

    This performance is a historically informed performance the vocalist uses period techniques such as prioritising smooth transitions, subtle vocal effects, nuanced dynamic shifts, and delicate ornamentation. She uses no glottal articulations or trills or altering effect. Bevan uses relaxed vibrato and has a more natural expressiveness which is typical of the Baroque period.

    Should this not be sung by a counter tenor?

    • @AndromedaCripps
      @AndromedaCripps Před 5 lety +4

      Slartibartfast I believe it's widely believed that Strozzi often performed her music herself for intimate audiences, so a soprano is definitely accurate. Although I suppose if the music was popular, countertenors or castrati might have sung it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
      Personally I'd think not due to the fact that the roles of men and women in music were different; today we see certain opera parts as interchangeably Soprano/Countenor that would never have been performed, for instance, by a Soprano in the period. They are distinct voice parts that happen to be utilized similarly.
      So being that Strozzi likely composed this for herself to sing, it was never intended to be sung by a countertenor or a castrato. However, it's my understanding that it's only *believed* that Strozzi performed her own works, and at that, she was one of the most prolific composers of her time, so she wasn't writing just for herself, obviously.
      Bottom line, we can only ever presume to know what is "accurate" to history. If you're a countertenor and want to sing this, or want a countertenor to sing this, I doubt you'll get anyone trying to correct you on historical accuracy. But it's entirely plausible for a Soprano to sing this work as well! 😊
