- Soprano Mary Bevan and theorbo player Elizabeth Kenny perform Lagrime Mie by the famed Venetian composer Barbara Strozzi. Strozzi was one of the first women to have her music published in her own name.
Watch them perform it as part of our concert devoted to Strozzi's music at Kings Place, on Thursday 10 January 2018: www.kingsplace.co.uk/whats-on...
The concert is the first event of Venus Unwrapped, a year-long celebration of female composers at Kings Place: kingsplace.co.uk/venus

This freaked my cat out so I gave it a thumbs up
Lol, I was about to say, my cat seemed really into this!
sorry to be so off topic but does anybody know of a method to log back into an Instagram account?
I somehow forgot the login password. I would love any tips you can offer me!
@Bentlee Briar Thanks for your reply. I got to the site thru google and I'm trying it out atm.
Seems to take a while so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
The dynamic range or the recording seems a bit narrow, like they recorded at a low mic volume to cut out the noise floor instead of just removing it digitally or using a Dolby system. Excellent performance and great dynamics from both the performers. IT just needs some engineering to make it sound like it did live.
I absolutely love this piece, but it seems that the vocalist used a very modern approach to this piece rather than a historic one. No trillo or any glottal articulations, along with a lack of changing affect and modern use of vibrato. I’m Kind of sad that the performance wasn’t historic considering the CZcams channel, orchestra, and ideology that seems to be represented.
megameleeplus Agreed.
Way to "not" appreciate something. Where's your performance? Show us where she went wrong. 😁
@@mikeycage1587 OP doesn't need to be a professional vocalist to detect when something is inaccurate. For example, I've never painted a painting myself before, but I can tell a bad copy of a Van Gogh from an original
Buetyful
This performance is a historically informed performance the vocalist uses period techniques such as prioritising smooth transitions, subtle vocal effects, nuanced dynamic shifts, and delicate ornamentation. She uses no glottal articulations or trills or altering effect. Bevan uses relaxed vibrato and has a more natural expressiveness which is typical of the Baroque period.
Excellent!

My favorite part is when she sticks the theorbo up her own ass.
Serious shout-out to theorbo player Elizabeth Kenny.
Thank you so deeply for featuring Strozzi's music.
@01:44 how much emotion you want for both players huh?
I want you to know that I applauded at my screen after it ended. I know that you can't hear it, but the tears streaming down my face compelled my hands to move anyway.
what are the lyrics about?
I came here for a school chorus project about Barbara Strozzi and was absolutely stunned by this performance!!!
I liked it The clothes are not a worry . It' s a work in progress .They are still glued to the music stand and the recording is not professional. The singer and instrumentalist are great.
Superb lute playing, as usual.
So beautiful, I am intrigued by the talent!
Amazing ,greatly soul-uplifting work and singing !
You can follow a beautiful madrigal by Barbara Strozzi in this videoscore, if you like: czcams.com/video/rx0M4rbVf-w/video.html
Beata ignoranza
Barbara Strozzi would be so proud to hear this beautiful rendition. Bravo 💐✨
Si sta rivoltando nella tomba
All you thumbs down people lighten up. Any thing to do with the extrodininary Babs fine by moi
perhaps they are the few people who know the difference between Baroque and Enlightenment
Love the idea but not a great recording. You can't hear that fantastic instrument, in fact it is almost not part of it, just a little pluck here and there. Too bad. Sorry have to give it a thumbs down because of the poor mixing.
Wow. So inspiring. Thank you
I'm speechless. Astounding.
We, the wild tribes of the Central Europe, are used to call this sort of boots "the retirees' ".
linkkkkkkkkk
So beautiful. Thank you.
Should this not be sung by a counter tenor?
Slartibartfast I believe it's widely believed that Strozzi often performed her music herself for intimate audiences, so a soprano is definitely accurate. Although I suppose if the music was popular, countertenors or castrati might have sung it. 🤷🏻♀️
Personally I'd think not due to the fact that the roles of men and women in music were different; today we see certain opera parts as interchangeably Soprano/Countenor that would never have been performed, for instance, by a Soprano in the period. They are distinct voice parts that happen to be utilized similarly.
So being that Strozzi likely composed this for herself to sing, it was never intended to be sung by a countertenor or a castrato. However, it's my understanding that it's only *believed* that Strozzi performed her own works, and at that, she was one of the most prolific composers of her time, so she wasn't writing just for herself, obviously.
Bottom line, we can only ever presume to know what is "accurate" to history. If you're a countertenor and want to sing this, or want a countertenor to sing this, I doubt you'll get anyone trying to correct you on historical accuracy. But it's entirely plausible for a Soprano to sing this work as well! 😊
no
Any one who gave a thumbs down just need help in understanding this god bless them
beautiful sound. not so much on the visuals.
people will disagree, but presentation is important.
at least tell us you filmed a rehearsal and decided to post it.
skinny jeans and funky winter boots? really?
funnyguise I just shut my eyes and enjoy😊
What an idiot 😂
Who gives a fuck, it’s music.
Shut up boomer
curious if this silly dude would have made this comment if both of the performers were men
Che bella musica!
That was fantastic!
People dont understand how important things like this are. There are so so few people keeping these arts alive..
Or people just sincerly dont Like how opera singing sounds...
@@Diogenes_ofSinope I dont like how it sounds. I cant listen to it for long, but I still see the importance of those who DO love it to learn about it and pass their knowledge on so that it doesnt die as an art form.
Came here from the other theorbo video! This is really cool thank you for sharing it with us
Это очень круто!) Звучит великолепно!! Hello from Russia! WE NEED MORE BALALAIKA AND ANOTHER STRANGE STRING INSTRUMENTS)
