    It wasn't enough for Tim Conway to make ordinary people laugh, he went after bigger prey...other comedians. Another famous outtake you should see is Mr. Tudball Needs A Secretary. Honestly, as one who has been around a while, The Carol Burnett Show was the high water mark of live television. You owe it to yourself to watch at least a few full episodes.

      I was lucky to see the reruns in the 80s and 90s. I love the Carol Burnett show :) You're right about Tim Conway. I would watch the other actors in the sketch to see who broke first. I watched Mama's Family because of this show.

    In the dentist sketch, Harvey Korman was the patient. Tim Conway was the dentist. He loved to make the others break character, he lived for it. I saw aninterview years ago with Harvey and Tim, and Harvey himself admitted to wetting himself in that sketch because he laughed so hard. You can tell when he did when he crossed his legs in the chair, thats when it let loose.
    The Carol Burnette show was one of my all time favorite shows in the 70s.

      Tim said he got the idea for the sketch from a time when he was in the army. He had to go see the dentist and in the course of treatment the dentist punched through his gum line, out his cheek and hit his own thumb with the Novocain.

    OK, Mr. Lboyd. You have just struck gold, silver, platinum, and diamonds. Carol Burnett (still with us) is a multi-talented national treasure. Her show is still in reruns and there are many videos of performances from the show on YT. Tim Conway, the dentist, and Harvey Korman, patient, had an ongoing challenge to break the other up. $50 to the winner each time. According to Tim, Harvey put 3 of his kids through school. You simply must see "The Elephant Story". Absolute classic.
    OK, I should have known it would be included.

    In the 1970's, Saturday nights on CBS TV, absolute can't miss TV. Carol, Vicky and Tim just killing it. One sketch was left out, Carol with Robin Williams. She gave him a second run through on a sketch and it was pure madness (his only appearance on the show).

    The Carol Burnett show was the best show I ever saw on television. Mind you I’m in my late 70s but the Carol Burnett show! they did not do anything recorded. It was always before live audience so their bloopers were in real time! And breaking character with something we all look forward to! Tim Conway was the best of the best on the show! He made sure that he did Adlibs in order to break the other actors characters into laughing instead of finishing the skit. It was incredible. Tim Conway was one of the best comedians of his generation.

    I remember fondly sitting with the folks on Saturday night and watching The Carol Burnett Show. It was on in the 70s and received lots of Emmys if I remember. The highlights were always the sketches involving Tim Conway and Harvey Korman, who played, or tried to play the straightman in a lot of the sketches. It was the best of the variety shows that featured sketch comedy and singing. I'm 59 now and still can't help but laugh at some of these sketches. You can probably find a lot of the more well known sketches on CZcams. Some of the cast also had a spin off tv show called Mama's Family that was on in the 80s that was pretty good too.

    Tim Conway says that Harvey korman peed his pants during that skit.

  • @ChanelStuff
    @ChanelStuff Před 7 měsíci +6

    Carol was adamant that the actors didn't break character. But sometimes she did it herself like in "the elephant story".
    Tim was the best of the best. It was his sole purpose in life to make them break character. He was a pro at ad libs. And when Vicky Lawrence called Tim an asshole, that was highly unusual from her. She never ad libbed and that wasn't part of the skit. That's why they ALL lost their shit in the elephant story, because they were shocked she went off script.
    My friend, you just found the BEST comedy show ever created!

  • @stevedavis5704
    @stevedavis5704 Před 7 měsíci +15

    If I remember correctly the cast would practice during the week and do the show on Saturday. They would do two shows in front of a live audience each time. The first show was done pretty much to script but the second show, that would be a live broadcast, the cast would improvise in an effort to get the others to laugh. Any thing with Tim Conway and Harvey Korman is hilarious but the full dentist sketch and the full elephant story are some of the funniest moments in TV. The Carol Burnett Show will take you back to a place in time when the whole family would sit down after supper and watch TV together and not have to worry about what the kids or Granma would see. Another really good show from that time was the Red Skelton Show. He did sketch comedy for the whole family with the criteria for the show being that if he wouldn’t show it to his Granma he didn’t do it. Interesting stand for someone who started out in the anything goes world of Vaudeville.

    This was actually a scripted show, and was rehearsed several times, including a final time filmed in front of an audience, before the actual "real" filming. But they were pros at ad-libbing and changing small bits to try and crack each other up. The filmed rehearsal and the filmed finished show were often different, which is why there are sometimes two versions of the same skit, most notably the elephant story, which is well worth checking out the full version. ETA there is a full version of the dentist skit on youtube, it is also worth checking out and maybe even doing a reaction to. This show was, IMO, the best of its kind.

    The Elephant Story, the entire cast had all tried to get each other to break on a regular basis, it was a running competition between the cast and even some of their recurring guest stars were in on it too. But this day Tim had ran through rehearsal with the script as is, but when it came time to do the live show, he shocked all of them and went completely off script with that ridiculous Siamese Elephant story. They loved doing the show and they loved each other like family. Tim Conway LOVED laughing, but he LOVED making other people laugh even more 😂♥️

    I wish old shows like this one would show up on my dash more often. I’ve been seeing little snippets of these old skit programs ever since I was really young - my aunt had quite a few VHS collections, and 1 or 2 dvd collections.
    Every once in a while I’d pop into her room to say hi or tell her something, then suddenly it’s 1 hour later because I can’t stop watching all the hilarious performers. 😂
    Sometimes it can be line delivery or just the ridiculousness of the writing that can make actors break character. But yes, sometimes they improvised every once in a while. From what I recall in interviews/commentary tracks, I think they encouraged people to not improvise too much because of how much it would delay everything. (But obviously it resulted in absolute hilarity so it wasn’t the worst kind of loss because people would talk about the show = free promotion!)

  • @mgentles3

    The Dentist is the most famous skit from the Carol Burnett show. Tim Conway could ad lib and break up the cast at any moment. He wasn't a regular for the first several seasons, but they finally realized their ratings went through the roof when they announced he'd be on. He did a character called Dorf in a stand-up style on shows like Johnny Carson's 'Tonight Show' that later (1987) translated to 'Dorf on Golf' a short film straight to video, which is still on CZcams. To me, the original was the best.

    If I'm not mistaken that dentist was Tim Conway, and he was notorious for commiting so much to his bits that it was nearly impossible for the rest of the cast to perform without breaking character. He was playing 4D chess with the audience of the show both at the live taping and then again at home with his antics. To give context, Harvey Korman was a verteran film comic who punched in the weight class of Mel Brooks and the two often worked together. So what you are watching in that dentist office bit and the two men on the couch, are two titans of comedy trying their best to hold it together and look at the other with a straight face, all while doing some of the most ridiculous things TV had ever seen at that time. And I was so glad they showed the Elephant story bit, this was the peak of this show!

    Okay, I have to comment here!
    The Carol Burnett Show was one of the all time funniest comedy shows ever. It ran in the early to mid 70's. The cast did alot of crazy stuff, like licking a hand. Remember, this show was before all the crazy crap in the world now like hiv and covid. It was a much simpler time, although it didn't always feel that way at the time.

    The Carol Burnett show was one of the best shows in the 70s and still today is amazing in most of the sketches. Tim Conway and Harvey Corman and Carol Burnett and Vicki Lawrence are some of the best comedians of all time. You did well on watching this. Watch the dentist skit from beginning to end. The elephant scene is legendary. Watch Mr. Tudball scenes. Watch Tim Conway and Harvey where Tim is a military officer dressing down Harvey. Watch any "old man" skit with Tim Conway especially the one with him being an old doctor coming to treat a patient. The list goes on. Watch Harvey Corman dressed as an older woman in a soap opera where Carol Burnett's character slams the door on her face as see the outcome. Comedy gold that even today is amazing.

    In the elephant story, Vicki Lawrence was the only one not to break character. Her”are you sure the little a-hole is through?” Quip broke Carol Burnett, Tim Conway, and Dick Van Dyke all out of character

    Aren't these the best. They did a 1st taping and then later a second taping and that's when the actors thru in silly stuff. So fun.

    I grew up with this show it's a classic they broke character all the time they would do improve so other cast members would lose it. 😂✌🏽

    The characters of The Carol Burnett Show were always trying to make each other laugh. Tim Conway (the short bald one) was the best at it.

    We never missed the Carol Burnett show unless something serious happened. Tim Conway was a legend and Vicky Lawrence was almost as good. The show ran from 1967-1978.
    You have GOT to watch the whole "elephant story" skit. That's Dick Van Dyke hitting the floor on the other end of the couch. And yes, what she said WAS aired.

    The elephant story should be watched in its entirety, Tim Conway told the story a couple of times, and changed it up….it was brilliant each time. While it was a scripted show, the actors (Conway in particular) would go off script regularly, and tried to get the rest to break character.

    My mom enjoyed watching this show when I was a little kid. I think I waited for afternoon cartoons that came after when I came home from school. Voltron, Transformers, G.I. Joe, etc. doesn't age well like Carol Burnett.
