Monta Ellis was possibly the greatest sacrifice in NBA history and perhaps even professional sports history.
Banished him to the Shadow Realm for four chips. Lol!
@Fencellisk Game of Zones reference 😆
@@FencelliskWarriors played Painful Choice!! Lol
@raymondsmith2040 no, it's Duel Monsters! 🤣
@phengmoua2389 bro, that is soo perfect! 👍👍👍
for a 40th pick he overachieved massively
Yes he did
He was supposed to go higher, but he was injured and reportedly under the influence during his workouts.
Ellis '11: 80 games, 24-3-6, 2.1 steals, 45% FG, 36% 3P, 79% FT
Pretty solid.
So one season
@@hustleman8797 No, I just listed what I consider to be his best season, statistically, in Golden State. He had a few good seasons as a Warrior.
@@nocturne311 he had good seasons at best
@@IllMatic97was entertaining can't denied
@@IllMatic97can’t make that seem like a bad thing though, he got buckets and was flashy ash at the rim
Always fascinates me how nba players literally just vanish into thin air. Kemba, Monta, Faried, Monroe, Stuckey, all guys I grew up watching who put up solid numbers and then next thing you know they’re just out of the league overnight. Will never make sense to me.
Yeah 10 years ago they were still in the league
@@JPDoomBluecuz most of them were drafted 10 years ago 🤦♂️
@@VictoriesAtTheMarathon yeah they are just regular players not stars i don't see why the nba wanted new generational players
It's because of politics and injuries
They didn’t change with the game.
This dude was no joke one of my favorite 2k players of all time. Him and curry were unstoppable from three in 2k11 I believe!
💯💯 him and Brandon Jennings on 2k were the original splash brothers best undersized backcourt in 2k history period😂💯
Monte Ellis was one of those guards who was cold af to those who saw him play, but never had the type of success that would have him viewed as a star player. You could put him in the same realm of guys like Marbury and Steve Francis. I'm not saying he's underrated because he was what he was as a player, but he was cold.
Francis waz definitely a star 4 a short moment & marbury 2 or at least very klose 2 1
@@afrosamurai64 That's what I'm saying. Hoops fans know of them because they were that good, but they get lost in NBA history because their rise only lasted for a short time. They were at the top of their game for no more than 3 seasons, and when they fell off, they fell off hard.
Monta Ellis is definitely an NBA player that sacrificed a lot of his game after his Dallas Mavericks days , cause he was just amazing and helped Dirk’s late prime
Loved him on the Mavs. Dirk looked really rejuvenated with Monta alongside him for those seasons
The Mavericks were BETTER when Ellis was OFF the court than when he was on it. Signing Ellis was a signal that Dallas was going to WASTE the last years of Dirk's prime. Mark Cuban had given up on winning and signed Ellis for ONE PURPOSE. To sell tickets. And to this day, fans don't realized that they had been duped.
His NBA mortality started to become evident & he tried make up for time squandered!!
That 2014 series against the Spurs is criminally underrated.
@@bandjolynfacts
Monta was legendary. His midrange jumper before the injury was absolutely water. Is athleticism, quickness and ability to finish was a sight to behold. Love Monta. He was amazing
I've been low key waiting for a Monta Ellis video. That boy was a lightning bolt
Yeah me too
Man him and Curry could’ve switched roles and history itself won’t ever be the same!!
Lebron would have had more rings then
Damn not a single all star game for this guy is legit a tragedy, I used to love watching him play!
Yeah that’s insane he didn’t make a Allstar team
Nah. He only had 1 all-star worthy season and every other season, he was a role player at best.
@@jonathansykes4986false.. his game was 🔥
In playing MyCareer 2K13, I played brick wall center and drafted by mavericks, having Ellis in a pick n' roll is so much fun.
Monta will always be one of my favorites. He was a monster for my Mavs too.
As a warriors fan,
I always got love for Monta Ellis and his contributions for the warriors during those years especially during the ‘We Believe’ playoff run; that man was explosive and entertaining to watch.
I can’t say if the warriors would’ve still won a championship if Ellis remained on the team but I do think he was the first to unlock the door for the warriors to be playoff contenders, which set the bar for the Warriors to become *evental* champions.
Do one on Kevin Martin also. Him and Monta pretty much had parallel careers even though they had different playing styles.
He was a certified bucket. Glad someone acknowledged him 🤝
kevin martin monta ellis danny granger, michael redd josh howard all some underrated studs of the 2000s early 2010s
I was literally one of the fans who booed Joe Lacob at Chris Mullens' jersey retirement night (I lost my voice doing it). Our logic was we were used to the Warriors being trash and didn't think a successful rebuild was realistic, so we were just happy to have Monta- a dude who could score points and put on a show for us Warriors fans with low expectations. We saw it as a new front office being over zealous and betraying the fans by getting rid of what was the only bright spot about the Warriors at the time. Oakland loved Monta. Little did we know, he was the sacrificial lamb for what went on to be one of the best dynasties in the history of basketball. Thank you for making this video as well as your videos about Bogut and Iggy. Monta will always be a legend in Oakland.
Monta Ellis pick and roll with Dirk were deadly.
Monta and D Rose always going to be favorites. Monta game was similar to A.I. undersized 2 guard that can create his shot and finish at the room with his speed
Prime Ellis was a good to great player on the Warriors
And he was good for those two years with the Mavs
I’m sorry but someone like Kyle Korver makes one then someone Ellis definitely shoulda been one
He was a monster with the mavs my favorite player to watch as a mavs fan during that time still one of my favorite mavs of all time
Yeah he was a problem with them
Wasn't the best defender on ball but could get steals off of instincts and quickness and should've been an all star once or twice... definitely one of my favorite underrated players
Kevin Martin vs Monta Ellis was one of my fav match-up to watch during 09
PURE OFFENSE
I remember watching Monta Ellis Vs. Dirk at Oracle in 2010 when I was 10. They were my favorite two players, and it was one of the best days of my young life. I was devastated to see him go in the trade, and didn’t understand the idea behind it at my young age. I’ve been a spoiled Warriors fan ever since.
The ``We Believe Warriors'' were a very attractive team, featuring many underrated NBA players such as Baron Davis and Monta Ellis.
In particular, the game between the Warriors and Mavericks in the 2007 NBA Playoffs was the biggest upset in NBA history.
Man if Ellis and Curry switched roles , the Warriors would’ve never been the same and definitely not a dynasty it would be today
Monta was known as the "Mississippi missile" not the "Mississippi bullet"
That moped injury forced him to become more of a jump shooter as he lost a lot of explosiveness. Didn’t help that he came into the league with questionable knee issues too
The Mississippi Bullet! This man was fun to watch.
*Fun fact:* That “We Believe” team had the only Warriors playoff series win from 1991 to 2013
Their owner for most of that time, Chris Cohan, was a huge reason for that.
The eye test was so filthy..could really do it all & when his jumper got to falling it was lights out..on certain nights he matched Kobe, Wade & other elite 2 guards during the 2000s, a elite offensive talent🔥
Monta was a beast in NBA2K... those years
Always tried to find a way to join the mavs in mycareer while he was on the team
This man was cold in his prime. Surprised he fell out of Indiana honestly.
He stopped playing his game he deferred to Paul George too much. I dont think he ever learned how to be a true number two option
Yeah I wonder what happened
@@Dudesaidthatdisagree he learned that playing under Dirk
@@jimmymorris5816 if I remember correctly though I think he lead the team in scoring both those two years in Dallas. Dirk was way past his prime and pg was right in the beginning of his so I think he looked at those two situations different.
@@Dudesaidthat his first year there Dirk led at like 21.6 or something similar Monta was at 19. His second year Monta led them in scoring at 18.9 which is really 19 . But agreed Dirk was past his prime. Had monta got there maybe 3-5 years earlier I think that woulda been something serious
Prime Drose and prime Monta would be a crazy match up
I remember watching this dude when i was young. He was quick af !
been here watching your content for a long time and its really good lol but i prefer watching your content when im about to sleep coz your voice is like story telling then a few moments i fell asleep already. lol keep up doing great vid. thanks a lot.
Playing with Ellis on the 2014 mavericks was so fun
2k14 MyCareer as an athletic point guard, with Dirk's spacing and Monta's quickness, we were deadly in the halfcourt and transition
I loved monte Ellis when he came to the mavs. He was such a fun player to watch
Monta was really good during his prime. It's really a shame that the Warriors had to give him up and made them even better as well as not making the All-Star is also a travesty but I guess it does make sense because he was a high volume inefficient scorer.
2k13 monta ellis is a fkng God
Remember goin to see see him in high school. He was the man.. always knew he was going to be a problem back then
Monta Ellis is one of the best players to never be named an All Star, but I think CJ McCollum, Jason Richardson and Mike Bibby are the three best players of all time to not make an all star team, with Monta Ellis, Richard Jefferson and Corey Maggette also up there
history and time have shown that ole' "Phoenix Mike Bibb" was pretty overrated. 14 and 5 for his career. As a starter for most of his career. That's almost good "back up point guard" numbers.
@JaeSproo I don't think Bibby was overrated as much as he played in the wrong era. Even though he played in one of the first successful pace and space offenses in Sacramento, that style of basketball wasn't valued as much back then as it is now.
We can add Cedric Maxwell and Rod Strickland to the list of greats who never were all stars. Big Al Jefferson also had a short run
Lemme guess you started watching in the 2000’s??
What about Stephen Jackson ?
Monta is a nba live/nba 2k legend
Mississippi Stand up!!!🙌🏽
Dear Andy, Bro, I have been following you for the last 2-3 years, constituting a stable but small factor of your youtube income. It has come to my attention that lately you really need to dig deep to identify a decent video topic. To that end, I would like to suggest you do a mini series of Euroleague legends to break the ice until the NBA season starts (please include Jasikevicious, Bodiroga, Diamantidis, Spanoulis, etc.) or even make a video with the most sucessful NBA players in Euroleague. Just a thought bro, would be really interesting (and educating for the 'snubbish' American crowd. Thinking of it, how about you start with the Greece v USA or the latest Germany v USA games to set things up. Cheers, keep up the good work!
2K13 Monta Ellis drove me nuts with his mid range shot
Still remember when he showed out during the Rookie v. Sophomore game during All Star Weekend. Absolute nightmare fuel in 2K.
Curry is just a blessed man
Monta ellis is unstoppable in 2k14
really good video. never knew about the moped accident.
He was more sizzle than steak in real life but he was a menace in 2K. The devs were definitely fans.
Great question. We liked him a lot in Dallas. That referring to himself in the 3rd person crap was annoying, tho.
Bruh Monta Ellis was so underrated it’s crazy he not even in the NBA anymore
Him & Baron Davis the Reason i even took a liking for the Warriors as a teen "We Believe Team" was fun to watch back then
Those jerseys in the thumbnail are FIRE 🔥
Monta My Mississippi Partna is the TRUTH‼‼‼‼‼‼ Definitely A Legend the Greatest From Mississippi
Leaving dallas was an error, he was needed with my mavs and he went to the pacers to burn his career and he killed it himself
One of the best guard we had when dirk were not on his prime, super sad when he leave.
Monta have it all
Edit: I commented this during the opening ads. I love that you started the vid with it.
a lot of warriors fans thought in between the "we believe" warriors and the nba championship dynasty warriors with curry, thompson, green, kerr
so during the second half of the 2000s that their franchise would be built around two youngsters in ellis and biedrins who the latter also signed to a huge extension with the team and was a double double machine at the time ... add to that two young left handed lengthy bigs in wright and randolph who were 1st round lottery picks in 2007 and 2008 ... most warriors fans thought that was the future of the franchise
there was also a rumor that the warriors would trade curry i think right after he was drafted in 2009 to the suns for amare which at that time would've given the warriors a "big 3" of ellis, jackson, amare which probably would've been a playoff caliber team but in all likelihood a "middling" postseason contender and not an nba title contender which almost all warriors fans honestly would've taken and been happy considering the team had made the playoffs only once in 2007 during a playoff drought from 1994-2012 that they had suffered thru so even being a consistent middling playoff team for a handful of years would've been seen as something to celebrate about within warriors fandom at that time
who would've thought that over the next decade they'd be the prominent dynasty in the NBA and eventually end up winning 4 nba titles
also as mentioned when warriors drafted thompson in 2011 he was essentially drafted to replace ellis at shooting guard eventually
if you look thomspon's stats in his rookie year before and after the ellis trade about midway thru the season, you saw the potential thompson provided short and long term
before ellis trade (38 games,1 start & 37 games off the bench) thompson averaged 8.0 pts 1.8 reb 1.3 ast on 44/46/78 splits
after ellis trade (28 starts) thompson averaged 18.6 pts 2.9 reb 3.0 ast on 44/38/91 splits
so the seeds of the splash brothers era and eventual dyansty with the warriors began the last 2-3 months of the 2011 nba season after this trade was made
Montae was the truth & I hated him on 2k 😂
Thank you for everything from the dub nation
Mans was goated to use in old 2k
Do Jermaine Oneil next from the pacers
No one is pointing it out but you’re about to hit 500k, congratulations.
Dawg Monta was one of them ones. Glad I grew up watching him
Nice video
Let's talk about Deron Williams next
🤩
Ellis was my favorite player back then!
damn it hurts knowing his career ending so fast. he was very electric.
Awesome subject matter!
Monta will forever be my childhood hero as a kid from the Bay Area 🥲 real warrior fans know
One of the best player in NBA history who never made the All Star.
Great video as always, Andy! This look-back makes the Warriors out for what they are. They didn’t care about winning. Monta could’ve definitely helped them win a title. You have to actually try to make the team better first. Monta got done wrong, moped accident or not. Not his fault they were trying to make money, not win anything and then start tanking. Sad.
Monta Ellis and Brandon Jennings in the Milwaukee Bucks' backcourt is entertaining too.
Yeah they played good together
monta ellis was iverson pretty much . dude never missed in the mid range straight wet buckets.
Shot like 53% from the field at that height back in '07-'08! THATS why!
To this day his layup package was the best ever. Hed do 360 reverse and spins
Yeah he had some crazy moves
@@baconeggcheesepodcast9390yeah he better in curry in terms of attacking the basket hes like more sf pg
“Layup packages” sound corny as hell
@@gigilmosiakoI don't think so. Curry just doesn't rely on it as much as Ellis because that was Ellis's only efficient means of scoring.
@@harrassee not true Ellis had an excellent midrange game . During 06-07 he once had a like 3 month stretch of shooting 70% FG percentage.

Change to what
I think they still struggle with Monta if they kept him
Why you say that
@@baconeggcheesepodcast9390 I mean will they struggle with him?
2k Legend 🔥🔥🔥
Yea he was 🤣
It's funny because as a Bucks fan I also see Monta as one of the stepping stones that moved the franchise in the right direction.
Why you say that
I'm also from Milwaukee but never saw that at all. The only stepping stone to the Bucks success was the development of Giannis.
He was more of a bright spot on some mediocre teams without a direction.
You should have included D Wade's reaction In the beginning.
He was so clutch in that Dallas run in playoffs
He always looked funny for some reason. It’s like he acted like he was quiet and kept to himself but in reality he was an evil person or something 😂
Monta was one of the best open court finishers I have ever seen.
He’s one of the reason I’m a warriors fan
I watched Monta Ellis play for several years with Milwaukee because I'm from Milwaukee. I can tell you that he was a talented player but he was very streaky and inconsistent at times.
He was a guy who collected stats but that's about it. He is definitely not a leader. He had a very high opinion of himself. He came across as very immature in interviews like the one this video started with. He didn't have the type of personality to be a team leader or to be the main man in the organization.
I honestly wouldn"t want him on my team if I was trying to build a winner. He cared more about individual stats than team success. He always came across to me ad someone talented but also childish.
