Bespoke Shirt Measurements at Budd Shirtmaker | Kirby Allison
Located in the Piccadilly Arcade right off of London's famous Jermyn Street, Budd Shirtmaker has been outfitting some of the world's best-dressed for over 100 years. In today's video, Kirby finally commissions his first bespoke shirt from this London institution. Watch Kirby meet with bespoke shirtmaker Darren Tiernan for his initial consultation and measurements.
As part of this series, we also film Darren drafting Kirby's bespoke pattern and visit the Budd Shirtmaker workshop in Andover where all of their shirts are crafted by a small and dedicated team of seamstresses.

I am currently on a weight loss journey and have always said that my ‘well done’ when I’m happy is to commission some bespoke shirts. Great motivation to keep in shape, if you ask me!
I've been excited about this one. Over the course of the last month I've gone deep and learned how to make shirts myself, I've made myself a very nice fitting dress shirt. The fit was harder to nail but sewing wise it was much easier than trousers. Am excited to see what nuggets of wisdom are to be found in this Budd video series
Interesting to hear, because I made my first shirt before trousers, and I thought trousers were easier. Maybe it’s just because you learn so much in the beginning.
@@rikardplatzer4220 I find the sewing part of trousers to be very difficult. The welt pockets the zipper+fly in particular. With shirts the only comparable part is the sleeve gauntlet, but it's basically just a less complicated welt pocket.
But the fit part of trousers, I found to be much easier, it more or less just has to fit perfectly around the waist and butt, the rest just hangs relatively loose. With a shirt, it must fit perfectly around the shoulders and neck, which is a pretty dynamic area with everything effecting everything else.
Great learning experiences though!
@@sunhuizart3821 Good points, I have to agree. Sewing is fun! Cheers!
Lol you sound adorable.
Why you lieing for
I got my first Budd shirt earlier this year for a wedding. Exceptional quality even though I didn't go bespoke
How much did it cost ?.
@@man_down511 I think it was £120. Plain white with the signature Budd collar & double cuffs.
i love these videos, so wholesome and just relaxing too watch. refreshing content , so tired of the shock and awe and the juvenality that pervades social media.
Nice to see this dude loosen up a bit with Kirby
I was about to mention the folded arms = defensive. 🤷♂️
You Sir patronise many institutions of London. It must be amazing to walk into an establishment, meet someone for the first time and know more about the institution than those who work there.
Damnnnn Kirby, back at it again with them bespoke shirtsss
Kirby always grinding gentleman style
One of the few still doing, mad respect
he exposes good stuff all the time but his way of dressing/style is a no no to me
I saw him the other day in London. He didn't let me through the door and instead barged me into the wall
@@derekporter66 you probably asked for it ? 😁
@@kanker5256 no. He saw me as inferior.
This is the only stuff that properly triggers ASMR for me, so thanks 🤗
same!
did you try Maurice Sedwell? It's also a bespoke Tailor with an ASMR style of talking.
@@sesamring7065 appreciate the suggestion, will definitely check it out thanks
Same here😊
Thankyou kirby for the look into the art of shirt making amazing episode 👏
I've been loving this shooting series. Mr. Allison, I would love to see you do a series on some of the historical clothes worn by working-class people like 1920's "Golden Age" of motorcycle clothing when it was still very much inspired by equestrian wear or clothing worn by early recreational aviators. And I love logging boots and forestry wear from 100 years ago, I know there are still logging boot companies like White's Boots in Spokane, Washington that have been making boots since 1853, I'd love to see a fitting and the process of making a nice pair of boots from them. I'd love to know all about the best makers of gear, equipment, and clothing worn by people like myself who work in the trades before the fast fashion brands like Carhartt took over. Thanks for reading this and considering my suggestion. Whatever you post in the future I'll be watching, this is one of the best channels I've discovered on CZcams in a long time.
that entry bell...
is a wonderful tradition
Great presentation and explanation plus a lovely looking shirt chosen
@Kirby Allison Could you please do a how to iron shirts video with Budd or Wil Whiting? A proper shirt maker showing his technique is missing on CZcams. And I miss your how-to videos from back in the day!
Yes to that
Excellent video. So much attention to detail.
Attention to detail as always Kirby 🇬🇧🇺🇸👌
Great video as always Kirby, Budd is the company I use for my shirts and go to their shop often. I have not got a bespoke one from them yet ,but maybe one day :-)
Hey Kirby, thanks for showing me a nice experience. I bought my first cigar sampler kit and boy oh boy.
I LOVE L O V E the smoking event. Everything about it is just amazing. Such flavor. Such relaxation. Oh it's truly a pleasure. Thank you so much for enlightening me with this lushous pass time hobby 💫✨️
So funny I’m sat in Andover watching your video Kirby while waiting to do jiujitsu lol. Love everything you do sir.
Great production values, Kirby. It’s like stepping back into a cosy, bygone era.
I would love to be able to commission bespoke shirts and a bespoke suit from the master craftsmen and craftswomen around Piccadilly, but it’s way out of reach.
the MOST important after fit and material, component wise
is the COLLAR of the shirt
Keep up the great work brother.
Been watching since I was in high school !! Glad to see the views are going up 👏🏽
Fabulous video, keep up the good work Kirby! Not sure if you would be interested in this or not, but an interesting idea came to me the other day. Whenever you're in London again or maybe even Scotland, it would be interesting to see a video on bespoke kilt making. I've always been fascinated with Scottish highland dress as a whole, I have seen and read wonderful articles and videos on very skilled kilt makers and the wonderful tartan fabrics they use.
Walked past here on Sunday on my way to Jermyn Street. Was not open but Floris was :)
I love my Budd bespoke shirt that James cut for me, you will too, Kirby!
Welcome to the club Kirby - FINALLY!
You’ll love that sky blue Budd stripe shirt. That pattern has been my favourite Budd dressing gown for over 12 years.
Nice choice on the fabric.
Best channel on CZcams.
Educational video!
I get my shirts at Costco and Sams Club. Rock your passion!!
It is working, figuring, striving to get to the point where you can experience these things. Perhaps the hardest part.
YES BEEN WAITING FOR THIS KIRBS BRO!!! EPIC AS! KIND REGARDS BEN FROM NZ 👌👌😎😜
Amazing
Budd's accessories are a little bit rich but so classy. I'm planning to invest in a madder scarf this year. If I ever have a chance to make it out to England I am 100% getting a bespoke shirt made by them. Good acquisition Kirby.
I dont like the buttons, look cheap plastic. Change it into horn/ bone buttons
It has been an honour to work at that store
"yeah, you see it". Hah, well stated!
I watch this shit to fall asleep I’m glad y’all are more cultured.
I'm never going to afford the sort of stuff Kirby gets but damn this is fantastic ASMR
He gets all this stuff for free in exchange for the advertising on his CZcams channel.
@@sitbone3 where is your proof of this? I highly doubt a lot of this it totally free.
@@TheGameCamer360 ..because you “highly doubt” something, that doesn’t make it invalid.
@@sitbone3 I employ a level of unbiased doubt. Your just spout rubbish with no factual backing.
@@TheGameCamer360 …wow, nice word salad. Good try, but you don’t get a participation trophy for that tripe. It’s you nap time.
It would be interesting to see a special in-depth discussion on monograms.
Heck yeah Kirby. Ur killin the CZcams game. Back with the bespoke. Love it! Thank you for another great video!
I dont know what changed with the most recent series but the audio, background music and overall production really moved to a new level. There has to have been some new hires behind the scenes, or at least a new budget.
The audio gate is cutting in too quickly, it makes the speech sound very weird at times.
Well done good job good dress or gun to short dress
Very good
Budd is completely first class. Luckily I’m a perfect ready to wear fit customer. I first used Budd after seeing an article about the actor Terence Stamp many years ago; always beautifully suited by Savile Row and shod by George Cleverley…….rather like Kirby in fact.
At 1:10 you can hear that Kirby has bells built into his suit sleeve to protect him from bears.
love your tie in this video Kirby - is it an ancient madder?
Kirby you must of spend a fortune on your latest London trip, im looking foward to the finished garments
His patrion suckers paid for it all.
You are lucky Kirby …visiting , experiencing the Real Deal…the legendary Bespoke tailoring..
You know, by now , through watching his videos, I know half of London🇬🇧
1:42 Respectively, I disagree with your statement, Every culture and nation has their own style and is subjective to the person. While the Brits dress well, I would not say the "most". None the less, your videos are very good and informative, Kirby, Best.
Sir Your Dormueil Sartoria Gallo Suit Which People Were Criticizing Is Looking Class Apart
Hi Kirby, love your videos. I’m currently on my sartorial journey and I recently purchased shirt stays. I love the look, but they’re uncomfortable. Do you have any tips? What do you use? And does a bespoke shirt just stay tucked better.
All the best
Has anyone watched the ENTIRE video? You couldn’t pay me to 😂
Great videos but you need to let people talk.
he never does
Dude talks way too much. Just let the tailor do their job.
@@orders69pizzas30 He is American, what do you expect.
15:30 He could also use the Perkins shoulder device...😅
Adriana Chechik really did an outstanding performance here
Hey, will you do a video on Hilditch Key? They have a shop in Jermyn Street, their shirts retails for £180 for the ready to wear line, going upwards from that price point. They've got collaborations with Loro Piana and I believe Drakes too and other other expensive cufflinks manufacturers.
Only curious because I got a steal on their Hilditch Key shirts, paid something like £30 quid for their Sea Island Cotton shirts brand new.
Kirby, great clip , hands out of pockets please .
Ps : try marks & spencer for shirts " as normal people wear"
What was the fabric, though? Pinpoint? Broadcloth? Poplin?
kirby got that cake.
Kirby is a male Bernadette Banner, so similar in so many ways.
Let's see Paul Allen's shirtmaker.
Do You know the name of that shirtmaker?
@@christianandresloboSinPerj-TDR I don't. Just know everyone who goes there are all apart of that whole Yale thing.
Valentino Couture
_ Thanks Tom.-
_ Thanks Fred.-
I noticed that the gentleman measuring you has his shirt untucked. Is that his personal preference or does Budd make shirts similar to the “Untuckd” brand that are made to be worn untucked?
Anyone know price of this bespoke shirt?
I'd love to get a bespoke shirt. I have a 20 neck, 48 inch chest and a 39 inch waist. Impossible to get anything off the rack
Interesting that the Fitter chooses to wear his own shirt untucked! Ps are the off the shelf shirts still Made in UK?
Made in the same factory as the bespoke shirts.
This is incredible. Your videos enlighten the world to the importance of style and dress.
Quick question....how does you explain to the Mrs. All the new stuff? And.how does she not kill you? Haha. All the best Kirby.
Wonderful videos
Which suit is Kirby wearing here?
It would be great if Kirby featured some American artisans, we can’t all write off London trips as a business expense 😕
Kirby reminds me of Hughie from the boys.
Definitely
Did I get the price right ? 345£ ?
A bit off topic, but when I saw your braces I wondered if you have trouble at the airport going through the metal detector. There are metal parts on the braces?
I’ve never had a problem.
Why not take the tie off?
I have my monograms on the cuff in color of the shirt
Collar collar collar collar collar chameeeeeeleon
Are you aware that a belgian TV program called diw have used one of your videos , its hilarious it's also on yt btw
Can anyone advise what brand of glasses Darren is wearing?
E B Meyrowitz
Kirby mentioned “Budd”, 4,637 times. So I guess that how he gets these shirts for free.
51 seconds ago? Goddamn!!!
Sehr gutt
Did I hear him say 32 in? I had kind of assumed they measured everything in centimeters or millimeters. Is that an industry standard to use imperial measurements?
This is a strange country when it comes to measurements, road signs are in miles, football pitches are still 100 yards and I buy trousers looking at the inch measurement on the hanger. But if I do any DIY I work in millimetres and centimetres 😂
@@andrewjohnston4127 It’s a product of going decimal in 1971 and our previous membership of the EU. But oldies like me always preferred imperial for clothes and distance. Both sets of measurements are now used fairly interchangeably, but with youngsters preferring decimal.
@@andrewjohnston4127 don’t forget, we buy our fuel in litres, but measure economy in miles per gallon, we measure people in stones and pounds, but everything else in grams and kilos
@@andrewjohnston4127 also our beer comes in pints, but all other alcohol comes in millilitres
The Audio ducking/Noise suppression is killing me!
14:50 Why doesn't he measure the length of both arms? There's probably a small amount of difference.

Second guy to notice your old shoulder injury.
How much is that American, can I send them my husband size
Kirby, how tall are you?
I'm very new to this channel but, my god, I want to be Kirby so badly. The American accent, the mannerisms, the clothing, the confidence. Have you always been like this all your life? Or did you have to adjust and change?
Will Kirby do a Queen (and Prince Philip) tribute? I hope so.
Buttons?
How does Kirby afford all this?
Selling drugs to black gangs in Londonistan
No use of the Perkins shoulder device
you know....he knows a few things about shirts.... you know
My favourite shirts, back in the late 60s/early 70s, were Ben Sherman. (They are now rubbish!) If I went to this place, would I be able to have a BS shirt made, to that design?
I just came to this video recommended after an Indigo Traveller video about live in Haiti. How the fuck this planet can produce two such diametrically opposed qualities of life is utterly beyond me. These guys getting fancy suits and fancy cigars and talking slowly thinking they're somehow above and beyond the rest of the struggling human race is baffling.
Life scares you doesn't it ❄️❄️❄️😂
@@AlphaBravoCheeseCake Not in the slightest. It irritates me.

@@graemeconnelly8849 They last for years and years. I’m still looking good in some bespoke Budd shirts in Swiss cotton I bought over ten years ago. They improve with every wash too and feel fantastic. Yes, it’s an expensive investment, but works out cheaper in the long run.
First.
Did he say "pimp themselves out for 100 hundred years"?!?!
-nevermind, he said "kitting out " that makes more sense
