Shannon that strawberry/ lemon actually sounds delicious and has peaked my interest. I'm not really into cakes but this cake seems like it is light and delicious.. thank you for your suggestion. 🥰
Another good two ingredient cake mix trick is a can of pumpkin puree. I recommend it with Spice cake mix. It's deliciously Autumnal. But chocolate is good too.
Back in college when I baked more often I would use 7up in place of water when I made the box mix because it made it moister and fluffier without messing with the flavor. Any time someone would ask I'd always swear by it.
For the citrus sodas, I would add fruit zest to the cake mix to give their flavor a boost. Orange zest in the Crush cake, lemon zest in the 7up and mountain dew cakes.
I wonder what the other funky, fun Mt. Dew flavors would taste like with the cake mix? Like, the Flamin' Hot Mt. Dew or the Major Melon Mt. Dew! Also, there's a "mystery" Fanta flavor called "What The Fanta" that's a bright blue color...those would be so fun to try!
I've got an old recipe from my mom for Coca-cola Cake. It doesn't taste like Coke. It's a chocoholic's dream. It's chocolaty, rich, and moist. And the icing that goes on top is even more decadent. It's so moist that you can't make it as a layer cake. It has to be baked in a lasagna pan. The recipe for the icing calls for chopped pecans or walnuts, but I don't use them when I make it. I don't make it for myself; it's too much for just one person. I would only make it for parties or other gatherings. The problem is that too many people have nut allergies. So I leave the nuts out. Those who've had it before with the nuts in never complained about my leaving that ingredient out. They just oohed and aahed over the richness of the cake.

The cake mix is 15.25 oz. because once you add the wet ingredients you should have 1lb of cake batter. Baking mixes are probably one of the only products that have remained consistent over the years as far as size goes. All because of baking’s precision of ingredient quantity and ratio.
Yep. You can't hide recipes going wrong, nor can you hide changes in ingredient recommendations to account for shrinkage. So they are forced to keep sizes consistent.
@@lovesamc depends on the type of mix, the vanilla one is 15.25, white is 16.25. the only real picture i can find of vanilla a few years ago is at 15.25 also, at least according to the images i'm finding from blogs posting stuff in 2019. i can't seem to find any past then. i'm sure it has to do how exact baking has to be to get the same results. clearly shrinkflation is a real thing, but doesn't look like it with the vanilla/white cake mix version at least...i haven't looked at the others. would be pretty noticeable to adjust cake mix sizes because the amount of liquids would change to super weird measurements.
@@rocksfire4390 I have seen some that are 16.25 but I think they are mostly 15.25 now, at least for the popular name brand ones. I know my grandma has some old recipes that call for cake mixes and we are needing to adjust those now because they are no longer 18.25. We didn’t even realize the difference at first until we started baking things. But, as it’s been stated before, baking is so precise so I’m hoping things don’t get smaller! 😂
I used to make these all the time as a teenager. My favorite combo was strawberry cake made with sprite. Cheap, quick, and vegan if you get the right cake mix.
Always thought of these as "dump cakes" as in you dump all the ingredients in together (no layering) in the same pan you bake it in, kinda mix it together and then bake it. We would take these camping whenever we had access to an oven (even a dutch oven works). My favorite was spice cake mix and dr pepper. It is very sweet and sticky. Great for camping though.
There's a cookbook that called the "cake Dr", and it has hundreds of ways to use boxed cake mixes with other ingredients. I first learned of the 7 Up cake when I was a teenager. When I was older, someone I knew made a chocolate cake with Coke. I'm more of a dump cake person..but I don't take a lot of time layering. I dump each ingredient in, spread it out, and throw the whole thing in the oven.
I made one of these soda cakes with strawberry fanta for my birthday one year and loooved it. White/vanilla cake mix and strawberry soda made it taste kind of strawberry shortcake-y and a little artificial but in such a good way!
Dump cake has been one of my VERY FAVORITE things ever since I was a kid. My grandma used to make them for me & now as an adult I like to make them because they are SO easy to veganize 🤤
My mom always makes a 7-up cake for Christmas! It's super good, it's a 7-up bunt cake, and she makes a 7-up frosting with it. It's delicious! It honestly tastes just like a lemon cake 😊
I do love the taste of soda pop when added to a cake mix. So much more flavorful than plain old water. Also, If you try mixing a liter of Sprite with some orange sherbet in a punch bowl - makes a punch perfect for just about any occasion.
I’ve made dump cake for years. It’s the favorite birthday cake, topped with ice cream. Cherry pie filling, crushed pineapple, chocolate cake mix, two sticks melted butter. It’s like Black Forest cake, but it’s goopy and amazing, especially topped with vanilla ice cream while still really warm.
If someone doesn't like soda, you can use any carbonated water (club soda). The cake won't rise as much as a regular cake or a canned soda mix cake would but it doesn't ruin the flavor of the cake mix and the cake is still moist. If you love lemon flavor, add 7-UP to a lemon cake mix. WOW! So good!
I love Chocolate Coke a Cola cake. Super moist. Especially with a nice fudge frosting. FYI- I highly recommend silicone cupcake liners. The cupcakes pop right out. Plus they are reusable.

Regarding the dump cakes, forty years ago when dump cakes first came out, they were super easy. 1. Dump dry cake mix in oblong cake pan. Dump 2 cans of pie filling evenly over cake mix. 3. Fanta cake is really popular in Germany! A sheet cake with Fanta as an ingredient, canned peaches and a topping of cream/sour cream and cinnamon. Delicious!
Always interesting and amazing recipes/tutorials most of which I actually try! All of the fruit Nehi or Fanta colas make great cake! The rootbeer and cream soda also add good flavors!
I remember the first time I tried Dr Pepper when I was about four years old, before that the only pop I had tried was root beer and my mom's diet coke and it had such a rich sweet spicy taste I immediately loved it
I make a pina colada cake with vanilla pudding mix, crushed pineapple, shredded coconut. Mix and add maraschino cherries on top. Bake. That's a great way to doctor up a boxed cake mix.
I made such a soda cake once for experimental purposes (regular size) and the crust had an interesting crunch to it. Definitely an option for an emergency cake.
My used to make a boxed vanilla cake, bake it, poke holes which she filled with condensed milk. Put it in the fridge, then top it with strawberries and whipped cream or pineapple and cherries. Once we'd picked a bunch of blackberries and she used those and whipped cream. Yum!
in chile we have these drinks called bilz & pap, bilz is a soda drink of granadine flavor, and pap is a soda drink of papaya flavor, we also have kem which is a pineapple soda drink, i think these would be interesting choices, if you have anything that comes near to those flavors.
My mom and I made an orange and peach dump cake. It’s simple. Sliced peaches, dump orange cake on it and if you want some butter slices took til done. Was delicious
I made a Diet Dr Pepper and chocolate cake mix cupcakes years ago, i remember them being really yummy! No Dr Pepper flavor when mixed with the chocolate.

We made this when I was younger, but with diet sodas because we learned to do it while in weight watchers. Though we were told to use dark colored sodas with chocolate cake.
I think the separating and filming process kinda prevented your rise from being better. The trick with a pop cake is partially that it's easy and fast, but the downside is that being fast isn't an optional thing so much as you gotta be quick or the carbonation that works in your favor stabilizes and reacts with the mix and it won't rise as well.
Numbers slide around my head so villainously it wouldn't have made any difference if I had figured it out beforehand, I still would have gotten it wrong.
yay!!! i did these all the time as a kid, we would do mountain dew and root beer cupcakes a lot. though at home and with friends, we would add food coloring on top of it so it looked the color on top of tasting like it, so root beer we'd add brown, mountain dew green.... it was so fun and id love to do a Faygo cake sometime!!
I had to try this -I have a bottle of Jones orange and cream soda -I measured out 1/4 box cake mix (115 grams) and 3oz soda to make 6 cupcakes -they are baking right now. Great idea since eggs are a premium these days
I made cupcakes with Sprite and lemon cake mix and a lime frosting with lime zest. I was surprised that it was light, fluffy, tender and tasty. I'm going to try the orange creamsicle next. Orange soda and vanilla cake mix.
I’m a big fan of this method when I’m on a budget- it’s been said adding coke to chocolate cake mix helps elevate the chocolate flavor; similarly, adding a citrusy soda to a citrusy cake enhances that flavor even more (ie 7Up to lemon cake or cream soda to vanilla). A favorite of mine is taking cherry coke & adding it to chocolate cake for something akin to a lindsor torte.
@@sophielorber4571 that’s what I was implying, but I couldn’t remember how to spell it, so I went with my best guess. I guess my memory is off- I went to Austria back in 2003 & one of the restaurants our tour group went to had what they called “cake” but it acted more like a torte because of its density. It was rich, had a thin layer of raspberry in the middle, then was topped with more raspberries & a dollop of whipped cream- elegant & indulgent.
@@17kiranime Oh how funny, I live in Austria and even the spelling was off I immediately thought of Linzer Torte! Glad you enjoyed it, it's one of my favorites as well.
This is a great way to make cakes for those who have egg allergies. Also love me some Dr Pepper! I’m from Canada and we couldn’t get it here for the longest time. Would only get it when we travelled to the states.
I have an egg allergy and we use a can of soda water to make cake mixes. The cake comes out fairly crumbly but it tastes good. And if I want cake pops, it's perfect.
We make these because my granddaughter has food allergies. Eggs being one. We use Duncan Hines mixes as they are egg and dairy free. We use regular and diet sodas. My daughter also uses sparkling water which is really good. It is very sticky though.
I'll definitely have to try the Barq's one. I love root beer, I'll drink any brand, but Barq's is farrrr superior to Mug or any other brand I've tried (they all taste watered down).
One of the little bodegas in my neighborhood has 8 inch soda bundt cakes with the soda logos licensed and on the labels --- Orange Crush, Coca-Cola, 7UP. They're pretty tasty and the Orange Crush is *very* orange and they're all crazy sweet, so a little goes a long way. The Walmart in my Mom's Central VA town sells a 7up cake. I bought in once when they had no strawberry shortcake cups, no angel food cake and no pound cake and mom didn't want me to bake a cake at home. I'll be experimenting this Fall, it's too hot now to bake much.

I usually make these kind of hacks with the rest of jam that I need to use before expiration date. The best cake I made was with an orange marmalade that I needed to use.
I've been doing this for years because of my daughters egg allergy for her birthday cakes and cupcakes. Although, I've only used cola, and dark sodas for chocolate cake and vice versa. Now I'm curious about actually tasting the flavors so I'll have to give it a try. Thanks Emmy!

Always interesting and amazing recipes/tutorials most of which I actually try! All of the fruit Nehi or Fanta colas make great cake! The rootbeer and cream soda also add good flavors!
Dr pepper and german chocolate cake mix is the best I've tried and I did quite a few variations
Dr Pepper cake is typically made with cocoa powder added! Its a chocolate cherry flavor usually a sheet cake with vanilla frosting and a cherry on top
FYI you can use powdered sugar and mix a small amount of soda to make a glaze or add soda to ready-made vanilla frosting
I remember the first time I tried Dr Pepper when I was about four years old, before that the only pop I had tried was root beer and my mom's diet coke and it had such a rich sweet spicy taste I immediately loved it
The Dr. Pepper shade! Just when I was getting over the pickle shade.
Wow this brings back memories. When I was in school, we made these cupcakes (pop and cake mix) in Home Economics class.
This sounds so good, I'd love to try a cream soda and for sure the root beer one. I'm not a fan of anything with cherries so not a fan of Dr pepper at all. And happy summer time to you Emmy and family 💗💜💗
I must know if you did the math of dividing up the cake mix in your head instantly, or if you had already calculated it before hand. Thanks! ❤
Same!
Faygo!
I had to try this -I have a bottle of Jones orange and cream soda -I measured out 1/4 box cake mix (115 grams) and 3oz soda to make 6 cupcakes -they are baking right now. Great idea since eggs are a premium these days
I also agree with some others. Use diet soda. And whipped cream on top. I used it for poke cake. Sugar free pudding as well.
Oooh cherry coke chocolate cake sounds fab
May I ask - what is a Lindsor torte? I only know Linzer Torte, but this one neither includes chocolate nor cherries.
I ❤️ Dr. pepper so much! One of my fave sodas!
Same is so good!
I am of course now wondering how the different varieties of Mt. Dew would do?
OMFG THIS IS A MUST TRY. such a fun idea with all the different flavours you can do!!
Chocolate cake mix with coke or Dr pepper is delicious also! This is my favorite way to make a cake
Similar to this, we'd use 7Up with box pancake mix!
I'd try it with the white cake mix to see if the flavor comes out more
That's cool. I never thought about adding pop to the mix.
We did this with coke and chocolate cake mix years ago. so good
I loved the retro vibes in the video
We make these because my granddaughter has food allergies. Eggs being one. We use Duncan Hines mixes as they are egg and dairy free. We use regular and diet sodas. My daughter also uses sparkling water which is really good. It is very sticky though.
I'll definitely have to try the Barq's one. I love root beer, I'll drink any brand, but Barq's is farrrr superior to Mug or any other brand I've tried (they all taste watered down).
Oh, boy! If you're a fan of root beer, you'll love the cake made with Barq's.
I just made a cola and yellow cake, because I didn’t have eggs. It was pretty tasty. I also added maple extract so it tasted like a giant pancake.
I'll sometimes buy one on a whim, cut into quarters and let them hang out in the freezer as I don't have much of a sweet tooth.
Yes! I adore the Doc.
Tastes good even when room temperature or gone flat.
I actually prefer it flat.
My mom used to make a mountain dew cake and its soooo good. Moms is sticky as well and omg it is soooo good!
I love new videos!!
I REALLY enjoyed this video. It was lots of fun to watch! Thank you for sharing ❣️ Your the sweetest. My son enjoys you lots too. He was the one who recommended your channel. Have watched EVER SINCE! I loved your food garden videos and all you have growing. I wish I could see how that's going. Your THE WHOLE PACKAGE! 😉 CONGRATS 🎉
I’d use cherry 7 up
So I work in a factory and occasionally ill get a Dr. Pepper the flavor to me is reminiscent of cream soda mixed with a coke vibe I love it so much 😋
Wow! I have been trying for years to put my finger on what flavor Dr Pepper really is. The minute I read your comment, it connected. It does taste like cream soda cola to me. Thanks for that description.
Emmy just pulled out the big guns with all the cool multi-colored spatulas! LOL LOVE THEM
Best combos (in my opinion)
Orange soda - vanilla mix
7up/sprite - lemon cake mix
Dr Pepper - red velvet mix
Coke - chocolate mix
Mt Dew - lemon cake mix
Root Beer - spice cake mix
Ginger ale - white cake mix
Pepsi - white cake mix
Strawberry soda - Strawberry cake mix
Grape soda - none (I love drinking it, but it doesn't belong in cake)
I don’t watch most of your videos much anymore but I’m still subscribed for that one rare obscure video that I do find interesting enough to click on and this is one of them and I loved every second of it ❤️
I've seen 7up cakes at Stater Brothers Market near me. Never got one, but I might.
If I make these I think I might try grape and strawberry soda. Maybe that sangria soda or cactus cooler.
The Walmart in my Mom's Central VA town sells a 7up cake. I bought in once when they had no strawberry shortcake cups, no angel food cake and no pound cake and mom didn't want me to bake a cake at home. I thought it was a bit too sweet but Mom liked. it
Imagine using Cheerwine, yum. I bet the Mexican sodas would be good, the tamarind, the apple, the pineapple. Omg, what about the Bubbly flavors? I'll be experimenting this Fall, it's too hot now to bake much.
I love chocolate cake with cherry coke and root beer frosting, i make it every summer and its always a huge hit
Interesting video!
I personally would have tried grape flavored soda, gingerale, and the seasonal flavored drinks from Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper! Wondering if this would also work with the fruit flavored energy drinks 🤔
Love these! I used a red velvet cake mix for the dr. pepper version and it worked out great!
I usually make these kind of hacks with the rest of jam that I need to use before expiration date. The best cake I made was with an orange marmalade that I needed to use.
Omg that intro, my 80s-born heart is FULL 😭❤️😍🙏😎👏👏👏
I've been doing this for years because of my daughters egg allergy for her birthday cakes and cupcakes. Although, I've only used cola, and dark sodas for chocolate cake and vice versa. Now I'm curious about actually tasting the flavors so I'll have to give it a try. Thanks Emmy!
Cheerwine and chocolate cake is MINDBLOWING.
