This recipe gives a good base for so many variations. I imagine it would work with other fruit purees. And you could add sweeteners. Even put pieces of fruit or chocolate in the foam to make it pretty and taste good.
In Brazil we have a boxed power that is used to make a dessert Maria-Mole, which loosely translates to Wobly or Giggly Mary, and is basically beaten gellatin with some flavour in it, so the apple sauce is just a base to desolve the gellatin, and I imagine you can use many thins instead. It has many flavours and is very childhood reminiscent dish. I would definetly say it is NOT a cake, but is a fun thing to eat when you are a child, and considerably inexpensive.
Wouldn't it help to use a sweetened applesauce? Then it would be more like those jiggly cakes that you sometimes see in other youtube videos. Also an idea to try would be to use a flavored gelatin like orange and add it as a layer of an orange fluff desert. The unsweetened sauce may be this recipe's downfall, but it does have some interesting applications in other ways.
coconut cream with some water and really spiced up is nice. do you blend? is that okay or just juice? cause you throw in some mushroom, a bit of ginger and garlic, little onion, some spice, you got a heck of a rich liquid soup base
This reminds me of a war time recipe. Also, in days gone by peoples tastes were different from ours today. We are accustomed to much sweeter desserts today than in the past. I wonder if you could use other pureed fruits in place of the applesauce.
something like mango would prob work the best if that was possible. man now i wanna experiment and i dont have a kitchenaid 😂. i think the water content of the applesauce was also relevent tho so idk how any puree would turn out unless you change the gelatin maybe but that was really the only time ive used gelatin so idk much about that
@@rorwyk Yes the gelatin needs water to develop and it is getting that from the applesauce. My MIL used to make a lime jelly dessert with Lime Jello substituting milk for the cold water. It was interesting, the jello would separate into a clear and a foamy layer, but usually the milk would curdle because of the acidulous lime flavouring.
There is a guy that did this recipe and he added sweetener, vanilla and used a hand mixer (I think only 1 mixer attached) that resulted in a more compact cake (about half as thick as this one) so it had more of a cake texture and no giggle.
Interesting. Thanks for trying it for us. In Kentucky we made apple butter in the oven. Just like applesauce but baked with sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon and other spices to smear on biscuits or bread/toast. It’s rich n brown n sweet I wonder if that would be yummy to do with this recipe.
I've seen this recipe on a lot of CZcams channels from Germany. Part of its appeal is the lack of calories. Usually they'd make it in a much wider pan so it comes out shallower. I don't know if that affects the texture. I've seen a couple of videos where they added optional vanilla extract.
@@rorwyk I wonder if you could use a box of sugar free jello? it would have the gelatin but add flavor and sweetness without adding sugar. did your recipe address this possibility?
@@roachmorphine8018 yeah, I get that, but the discussion here isn't about what's good for you, it's about adding sugar into the mix changes the chemical reaction and whether it will set up or not. Stevia might work or it might not since it's a natural "sugar"... would just have to use trial and error to find out.
It's so rare to see emmy say a straight up "no" to a food! This would be good for a film set where you have to do take after take of eating cake without getting crap in your teeth and having to chew and swallow before speaking.
So I ended up using the naturally sweeter option of berry applesauce. I also added the tiniest amount of raspberry framboise baking emulsion gel into the 2 ingredient mix. The addition of the raspberry framboise emulsion made the flavor of this "suspended foam" quite delightful Then I made homemade whipped cream and only slightly sweetened it and added the raspberry framboise emulsion one more time to frost the top it once it was set , last but not least, I made spun sugar "spider eggs" and topped it with that at the end. It was an absolute fav and show stopper at my High Witches Afternoon Tea party last night Thank you for going over this recipe with us 🕯️🖤🙏
So my god mother used to make something called “nothing cake” when i was little and I never knew the recipe… except that she always asked me what flavor I wanted lol because it called for jello… idk how she made it or anything else about it but my god that bite of heaven was burned into my 4yr old brain. And if anyone ever had something similar called “nothing cake” please share the recipe!!!
Something the old ladies in my gmas community would make is whipped cream based, it's essentially jello flavored whipped cream, but it was thicker, kind of like puddingy
@@jayfranke my grandmother made to die for homemade pudding, but bought instant pudding sometimes to make what she called mousse. she took one c. whole milk with one c. heavy cream, started whipping and added in a small box of instant pudding. whipped till very stiff and viola... mousse 😘 I haven't had that in decades but I remember it being very rich and tasty. very easy, delicious mousse dessert.
It could have been "Flummery"....beat almost set jelly/jello with cream or evaporated milk, then chill. There were plenty of recipes when I googled it, so you can check it out and see if that's what your god mother made! 😀 I'd love to know if this is right!!! 😊
The camp I used to work at made something like this. It was called “jell-apple-o” and it was actually good! They definitely used sweetened/flavored jello bc it was pink and very sweet.
I love apple cloud cake. Or apple cloud Mousse. Great way to have a sugar free treat. I topped it with homemade raw whipped cream and cream cheese frosting sweetened with monkfruit and honey. The blog where you can find the recipe, explains that it is definitly not a wheat cake texture, so I knew what to expect. Also, I don't do the double boiler. Gently heat it on the stove right in the pan. It comes out fine.
oh! i did this a couple weeks ago w a berry flavored applesauce (no sugar that parts crucial). i think i wouldve preferred regular apple flavor but the store was out. it looked really pretty. tasted bittersweet (actually getting past the texture was the hard part) but i liked it once the whipcream was on with some raspberries i bought. if you like more sour than sweet stuff youll probably love this *if you can get past the texture*. my fiance ate the rest of it overnight and he rarely eats dessert except sour candy. this is a good option if youre really unable to eat real sweets basically.
@@2degucitas do your whipcream from scratch and get the ripest fruit you can get your hands on. raspberries make the taste wayy less confusing to eat as you can reclass it as sour soft candy/jello instead of cake but some banana would prob be good. the texture is. weird. hard to get around but its a pretty cool experience id say even if its not sweet enough for you. it also seemed like it was best the colder it was vs a slice that sat out a few minutes but i didnt have any leftovers to try getting colder via freezer
My grandfather was a baker in Sweden during ww2. They used a very similar apple recipe on their cakes insted of wipped cream or buttercream. It was another stabilazer thought then gelatin. The wipping was the same. 😄
I love your honesty. So many people make things and pretend its good. Then we'll make the dish and find out the hard way that it's awful. So again Thank you, thank you, thank you.
I made this before as I found it on a different youtubers channel. This is very delicious and and is safe for me to eat as I am a type 1 diabetic. It's good with cinnamon and a little stevia. 😏👍thanks Emmy for making this video. I like yours better as it looks thicker. I like how it looks like a Japanese jiggly cake.
I wonder if it'd work better with another type of fruit sauce. I'm sure it would taste a lot better if you used home made apple sauce with a variety of different types of apples and added sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla, and possibly some real maple syrup or another fruit syrup that complements apple. Cranberry sauce might be good to add.
Hi Emmy. This is a nice fluffy cake 🍰. The cake needs to taste like a cake, but it didn't. It needed to be a little bit sweet. Maybe next time you can do it again four ingredients. Not two please. But all in all I enjoyed the video. God Bless you Emmy. Stay healthy. Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😘🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰
i've seen a lot of people making these apple marshmallows, but you are the only one that was honest and said that it's not actually a cake. so ya, thumbs up from me for being honest oh, and those apple marshmallows can actually make decent smores. it's just best to add a little sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and maybe a bit of clove to the marshmallows. then when building the smores i use either a dark chocolate, or a chocolate that has either caramel or little bits of salted toffee in it. and if you want a stronger apple taste you can use apple juice, or even a can of apple juice concentrate instead of apple sauce, but it will look and feel like a proper marshmallow, instead of a wannabee cake
I tried this out but with normal apple sauce (so with sugar) and it's better treat overall. Nice, fluffy with a nice sweetness that is not overwhelming. I will likely try the same variation but with Lemon as I have a feeling that would work well or with a sugar free flavored jello which may bring some variation on the flavor.
Hi Emmy. Have you tried making Ice Cream Bread yet? Just 2 ingredients. 😊 Though I like to add a third (brown sugar) to make it a bit sweeter and more moist.
I used to have a recipe that was a box cake and box instant pudding (any mix you like such as white cake and pistachio or banana and chocolate). I can’t remember or find the recipe online. I find a lot of recipes that are not the same. This one was really moist and good. This recipe and the comments remind me of it.
I'm soooo thankful you actually tackled this recipe.. I'm throwing a High Witches Afternoon Tea and this was one of the magical desserts I wanted to serve. Thank you, thank for making a video on preparing this recipe !!🎉🎉🎉
Its rare Emmy says no. I was highly curious how something like this could even resemble "cake" with the ingredients. But yeah, foamy was what I was expecting. Not always a texture people want. xD The first video I seen this recipe pop up in on YT claimed you could eat the whole pan for 200 calories. I guess it has that going for it. This reminds me of some of the homemade-wild Jello/Whipped Cream salads ladies would give recipes out to at Weight Watchers.
The look on Emmy’s face upon first tasting this cake! Oh man, what a disappointment! I wonder if it would taste any better with sweetened apple sauce?🤷♀️ By the look and sound of this one, it’s gonna be a hard pass for me. Every time I think of old timey recipes, I always think of the one time my husband cooked a hash from a depression era cookbook, my mother-in-law gave us. Our kids LOVED it! Thank God for Emmy! I haven’t had the heart to make any of those recipes though. 👩🍳😊
I was quite excited to see she preparing it! It looks really beautiful. I believe that perhaps adding a bit of fiber or starch to give it body and sweetener might help a lot. I'll do some tests at some point to see if I can make something edible. Coconut flour, for example, doesn't need to be cooked. Maybe toasted flour, almond flour or something else. 🤔
I am curious how unsweetened CINNAMON applesauce might change that, with another flavor profile in the mix. Being newly diabetic, it can be a struggle to find deserts to share that aren't either something super expensive/"Keto" or non-existent.
At my house due to diabetes is running in family we just go ham on artificial sweeteners. Obviously not the healthiest option but when you really want something sweet cinnamon really doesnt cut it.
Wow this is soooo trippy!! When you broke the cake in half you can actually hear that “foamy” sound!! That is soooo bizarre! I’m always so curious how someone even dreams up an idea like this?! Super cool!
Maybe add vanilla and a sweetener like stevia to keep the calories down? Maybe use just an extra amount of gelatin to have it set a little firmer? I would definitely add an apple compote before setting in the fridge and use real whipped cream on top. I wonder if agar agar could be used to make it for the vegetarians in my family?
Use sweetened applesauce and serve it in wine glasses with a layer of unsweetened apple sauce, topped with cream and shredded coconut (or something for texture)
Oh man that parchment paper, I put a hack up and got roasted for it. I don't understand why people flip out over sharing things I have found to work for me. I digress I was so hoping this would be a good one so I could eat it for dessert! That's all I ever crave is cake and desserts. Definitely sounded really weird there at the end 🤣
@@theelizabethan1 well most people take the time to cut perfect circles and spray the bottom, put in the paper and spray again. This recipe gives a good base for so many variations. I imagine it would work with other fruit purees. And you could add sweeteners. Even put pieces of fruit or chocolate in the foam to make it pretty and taste good.
It looks like cake, cuts like cake, but from the description, is like eating a memory foam mattress... :P
I love how incredibly descriptive you are. I feel like I can almost taste the texture...and I don't like it either 😂
I've been on liquids for going on 3 weeks. I want it. I'm going to tell myself that it's cake. 😋
I hope you enjoy it. Let us know how it goes.
coconut cream with some water and really spiced up is nice. do you blend? is that okay or just juice? cause you throw in some mushroom, a bit of ginger and garlic, little onion, some spice, you got a heck of a rich liquid soup base
you on an alcoholic bender ?
Don't tell yourself it's cake. Tell yourself it's an apple mousse. Your brain will agree with your tastebuds. :)
This reminds me of a war time recipe. Also, in days gone by peoples tastes were different from ours today. We are accustomed to much sweeter desserts today than in the past. I wonder if you could use other pureed fruits in place of the applesauce.
That's what I was hoping!
something like mango would prob work the best if that was possible. man now i wanna experiment and i dont have a kitchenaid 😂. i think the water content of the applesauce was also relevent tho so idk how any puree would turn out unless you change the gelatin maybe but that was really the only time ive used gelatin so idk much about that
There's a peach sauce, similar to applesauce. That probably works
@@rorwyk good idea, I'm going to try this tomorrow on a small scale lol. Maybe strawberries because that's all I have lol
I wonder if a sweetened strawberry flavor applesauce could make it more palatable. It still won't be cake but it would be pink!
I was thinking about what flavored jello would be like
im not sure but when i made it the recipe i got it from said no sugar or it wouldnt turn out
@@rorwyk I wonder if you could use a box of sugar free jello? it would have the gelatin but add flavor and sweetness without adding sugar. did your recipe address this possibility?
@@lumpyspiceprincess2697 No Sugar Added uses chemical sweetener. It's even worse for you. Just add Truvia to the applesauce, it tastes the same 👍
@@roachmorphine8018 yeah, I get that, but the discussion here isn't about what's good for you, it's about adding sugar into the mix changes the chemical reaction and whether it will set up or not. Stevia might work or it might not since it's a natural "sugar"... would just have to use trial and error to find out.
I've actually been making a variation of this using a packet of cherry jello and applesauce for years, and it turns out delicious.
It's so rare to see emmy say a straight up "no" to a food! This would be good for a film set where you have to do take after take of eating cake without getting crap in your teeth and having to chew and swallow before speaking.
Yes like on the Soaps ☺️
Love this idea!
So I ended up using the naturally sweeter option of berry applesauce. I also added the tiniest amount of raspberry framboise baking emulsion gel into the 2 ingredient mix.
The addition of the raspberry framboise emulsion made the flavor of this "suspended foam" quite delightful
Then I made homemade whipped cream and only slightly sweetened it and added the raspberry framboise emulsion one more time to frost the top it once it was set , last but not least, I made spun sugar "spider eggs" and topped it with that at the end. It was an absolute fav and show stopper at my High Witches Afternoon Tea party last night
Thank you for going over this recipe with us 🕯️🖤🙏
So my god mother used to make something called “nothing cake” when i was little and I never knew the recipe… except that she always asked me what flavor I wanted lol because it called for jello… idk how she made it or anything else about it but my god that bite of heaven was burned into my 4yr old brain. And if anyone ever had something similar called “nothing cake” please share the recipe!!!
I couldn't find that on google but what about a jello poke cake?
@@jayfranke That's Flummery! 😀
The camp I used to work at made something like this. It was called “jell-apple-o” and it was actually good! They definitely used sweetened/flavored jello bc it was pink and very sweet.
my family makes applesauce with raspberry jello for the holidays (replace the cold water in the jello recipe with applesauce)
you mean jello with applesauce but sounds good i will try that i hope banana jello is a thing
This looks like something that would be great for April Fool's Day. 😜
or "is it a cake?"
Apple Foods Day
April "cake" love it!
"not at all. well, i shouldn't say not at a- yeah, not at all" lmao emmy just had a kombucha girl momment 💀💀
oh! i did this a couple weeks ago w a berry flavored applesauce (no sugar that parts crucial).
i think i wouldve preferred regular apple flavor but the store was out.
it looked really pretty. tasted bittersweet (actually getting past the texture was the hard part) but i liked it once the whipcream was on with some raspberries i bought. if you like more sour than sweet stuff youll probably love this *if you can get past the texture*. my fiance ate the rest of it overnight and he rarely eats dessert except sour candy.
this is a good option if youre really unable to eat real sweets basically.
What additions do you suggest? Spice? Sweetner?
I love how honest you are about your cooking 😂❤️
There needs to be a cooking show based around a painfully honest cook who is judgey about their own cooking 😂
Aerated Apple Sauce is what that is. Probably gassy.
Thanks Emmy 😘🥰
This would be perfect for those who are on a no-fat diet. Minus the whip topping. Probably add some sugar and spices to boost flavor.
Wow that’s like magic! I bet that would’ve been bomb with cinnamon or strawberry applesauce too.
It's finally hitting me how incredible you are as a person! Thank you so very much, Emmy!
Perhaps I should say that I'm appreciating everything more. I'm so thankful for all of you!
Why, thank you. 😊
Your face which usually changes just slightly good or bad made me smile so much!!! 😊 this cake is 🤯🤯
Omg I can’t get over how much it looks like cake
I've made this and enjoyed it. Felt it would be good for senior citizen diets
Mari'a. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😘😘😘🍰🍰🍰🍰🍰
i've seen a lot of people making these apple marshmallows, but you are the only one that was honest and said that it's not actually a cake.
so ya, thumbs up from me for being honest
oh, and those apple marshmallows can actually make decent smores. it's just best to add a little sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and maybe a bit of clove to the marshmallows. then when building the smores i use either a dark chocolate, or a chocolate that has either caramel or little bits of salted toffee in it.
and if you want a stronger apple taste you can use apple juice, or even a can of apple juice concentrate instead of apple sauce, but it will look and feel like a proper marshmallow, instead of a wannabee cake
I LOVE your reaction. It's great seeing someone that makes something and is honest with how it tastes.
I watch your videos every morning before I go to work. You really help kickstart my day ❤
I love your descriptions. And your honesty.
Hi Emmy. Have you tried making Ice Cream Bread yet? Just 2 ingredients. 😊 Though I like to add a third (brown sugar) to make it a bit sweeter and more moist.
I absolutely L-O-V-E your blatantly honest evaluation of this cake/not-cake. Priceless! Keep up the good work.
I used to have a recipe that was a box cake and box instant pudding (any mix you like such as white cake and pistachio or banana and chocolate). I can’t remember or find the recipe online. I find a lot of recipes that are not the same. This one was really moist and good. This recipe and the comments remind me of it.
Those Pistachio-flavored dessert bases are much harder to find nowadays, don't you think?
I’m guessing the graininess of the apple helps give it that structure. I wonder if you could do this with a starchy potato.
I'm soooo thankful you actually tackled this recipe..
I'm throwing a High Witches Afternoon Tea and this was one of the magical desserts I wanted to serve. Thank you, thank for making a video on preparing this recipe !!🎉🎉🎉
That’s so trippy 🤩 awesome video!
“It’s wet!“ best description to give other than “moist cake” with a huge emphasis & expression of both assertiveness & disappointment.
Whenever I get back from college and wanna watch some videos while I eat dinner, I'm hoping Emmy has a new video! Makes my evening SO much better!
Literally same!
ajajajajaja
If you mix canned pumpkin with butterscotch pudding or just the mix it tastes pretty good. I bet it would with the applesauce too.
Yes just in time for my son's bed time.. I know what will be our night night show ♥️♥️♥️
The look on Emmy’s face upon first tasting this cake!
@@TheSimArchitect it's a really fun idea, tho! Fascinating how much it looks like cake!
Insane how much that actually looked like cake!
Keto products are safe for diabetics.
Wow this is soooo trippy!! When you broke the cake in half you can actually hear that “foamy” sound!! That is soooo bizarre! I’m always so curious how someone even dreams up an idea like this?! Super cool!
I love home made Apple Jelly Suspended Foam
Use sweetened apple sauce and do everything the same but top a real cake with the apple foam
A spice cake!
Trying to find replacements for my spouse who cannot have wheat now. Thanks for the honesty before I waste me time :) you’re amazing
Gonna use that for a base... cheers.🙂👍
Add sweetener and flavour I've got my next fancy dessert
This was so much fun to watch. Thank you!
Love your honesty in this video. 👏
It's not a cake, but I like jello and applesauce, so it's a nice foamy apple jello! Thanks for the recipe, I will absolutely try this!
LOL! The look on Emmy's face when she tries her first bite of this applesauce "cake" is priceless! You immediately know it's not good!
I wonder if you could use a different fruit concentrate in the same way?
I might try this with apple butter. I love having lots of spices with apple flavor.
That pull-apart tho omg… so SATISFYING 😍😩!!!
Love you Emmy! 💗💗 Keep up with the old times/ depression meals!
😳😳😳 the sorcery of it all! 😂 I love how once in a while you do something where I’m thinking “We’ll damn… that’s freaking crazy”
Use sweetened applesauce and serve it in wine glasses with a layer of unsweetened apple sauce, topped with cream and shredded coconut (or something for texture)
The “no.. no.. not at all.” Made me giggle lol.
Oh man that parchment paper, I put a hack up and got roasted for it. I don't understand why people flip out over sharing things I have found to work for me. I digress
I was so hoping this would be a good one so I could eat it for dessert! That's all I ever crave is cake and desserts.
Definitely sounded really weird there at the end 🤣
Was it the crinkle-makes-it-flat hack? Lots of people are *ssholes about that one, but it works, so they can just puck off.
I'd like to hear about your parchment paper hack!
@@theelizabethan1 well most people take the time to cut perfect circles and spray the bottom, put in the paper and spray again. I just rip mine into smallish pieces, push the extra into the corners and spray the sides. Takes less time and I thought it was a good thing to share. I was told I don't take pride in my baking because I did it like that lol. Among other things.
@@asugarholicslife When fragmented pieces are at the bottom of the pan, my experience is that the batter seeps under the paper......You may have a knack that prevents this...??
Your NO face was hilarious :D thanks for sharing the recipe, I'm glad you tried it for us lol.
My grandma used to whip Jello before chilling because it was more appealing to us as small children. Very nostalgic and fun-almost foamy.
I also think doing a flavored Jello with this would add a lot.
this sounds excellent for my diabetic 67 yr old father and me!!! we are on a weightloss journey but also we wanna fool ourself we are eating flour cake 🎂
