HD: Chasing the Horseshoe Curve Steam Special through The Alleghenies 5-25-2013

Memorial Day Weekend, on Saturday, May 25th, we made a trip out to Lewistown, PA to chase the NKP 765 through the alleghenies to Gallitzin and back. Below is an index of the locations we caught the HSC Steam Special:

01:35 - Tyrone Amtrak Train Station, Tyrone, PA
02:49 - Gallitzin Tunnels, Gallitzin, PA
05:24 - Alto Tower, Altoona, PA
08:28 - Union Furnace Rd, Union Furnace, PA
10:07 - John St, Mattawana, PA
11:09 - Lewistown Amtrak Train Station, Lewistown, PA
12:13 - Mowery St, Mifflin, PA
13:29 - Duncannon Train Station, Duncannon, PA
14:28 - Rockville Bridge, Marysville, PA

I’m glad I rode it and the other 765 excursion closer to me near Bethlehem and Allentown to Pittston and the 611 excursion at Manassas, VA on June 4, 2016 because they might never happen again. NS no longer allows excursions again. I also rode behind 611 at Strasburg Sept 2019. I didn’t ride though Lehigh Limited in Aug 2013 or any of the Amtrak Autumn Expresses two of which went through Reading, PA and one through Allentown, very rare mileage to ride as the NS lines in PA east of Harrisburg are currently freight only. Amtrak wants to have train service to Allentown and Reading though as stub routes.

I always automatically associate trains from the early 20th Century with generic annoying electric, dare I say "rock" music riffs. I would have watched this had the background music not been so bad. Whoever produced this has no idea.
