Restoring C3 Corvette Door Hinges

  • In this video, I show you how to remove the upper and lower hinges, how to disassemble them, and after a thorough cleaning and a fresh coat of primer, how to install new bushings, put the hinges back together with new pins, and how to reinstall the "S" spring.
It seems we always expect door hinges to work properly, but C3 Corvette doors are very heavy, so the hinges have a tough job that, in most cases, they've been doing for over 40 years.
The first sign you may notice is that they start making noise, and it's all downhill from there if you don't show them a little TLC every once in a while.
Something as simple as a penetrating fluid will work wonders when used as a preventive measure. Once things break or stop working, it's too late for that, and the only viable solution is to remove them for a complete overhaul.
Once the hinges are out of the vehicle, you want to disassemble and properly clean them. After that's done, you want to protect the metal and that means a couple coats of primer.
Then, new bushings and pins are mandatory, as are new hinge springs.
When everything is installed, several coats of body-color-matching paint will make them look new again.
    Thank you for watching! 🙂👍🏻

It always amazes me when you take a part that looks like it is junk and make it look new again. Awesome job on the hinges. I really enjoyed the video. Great information and presented in a professional way. Your friend has a nice shop. LOL Keep up the good work.

Thank you for the kind words! Getting old parts from junk to new takes forever. From junk to perfect, just a little longer.
P.S. I wish my friend with the nice shop lived closer. lol 😆

I can say with great certainty that the only way to install this spring is to take the door off. I tried doing it with the door on and it is impossible. The crowbar really worked well for me, but I’m sure the special tool is fine also. Great video as usual.

Another great vid, thank you....my doors need adjusting, the hinges are good though...2 completely different questions...Do you have a little lever under your middle vents on the drivers side that just hangs there and what is it? 2nd...I have a grommet that needs replacing on the back of the car a little bit away from the rear window, have you ever seen a 76 corvette with that? Thanks for any help!

    • @76vette

According to the 1976 Corvette owner's manual, "A lever located to the left and under the housing may be used to close an internal valve in the air duct and shut off air flow." So basically, that lever (most break off) opens or closes a rubber flap behind the louvered vents in the center console to block hot or cold air from the HVAC system directed toward the higher (face) level. I hope that makes sense.
As far as the "grommet" you describe not sure I understand what you're describing. Did the car at one point have a luggage rack? Could it be something related to that? If you want to send me a photo to diy76vette@gmail.com maybe that would help me better understand and hopefully help you figure it out.
      Thank you for watching! 🙂👍

@@76vette Thank you so much, I'll get a few pics and send....that little lever thing is loose just hanging there and might be the reason why I'm getting very little AC if any.....got compressor and just recharged with r12....Thank you again.

You may want to ensure the air ducts are properly connected to the system. Most used foam seals that disintegrate over time.
This article has tons of pics that may help you see how the ducts are connected.
