Bell sounds really good. Hopefully the lurching at low speeds will correct itself once it’s been broken in. Nice review as always!
I hope so too....that was Really jerky
R.I.P.

Nice steam loco, sounds good too
I already got me one of these a few weeks ago a good locomotive.
Thanks for doing a Grand Trunk Western loco! I love the gtw
Nice loco james i like how soundtraxx has the new bell and whistle i never herd on a bachmann sound value line of locomotives
I still like the longer videos! I feel like a lot was overlooked and rushed. I still like the runbys! Thanks! Jared.
Yeah, me too Jared. Cheers, Dan
Something I noticed on this engine and other bachmann sound value steam engines is that when it gets to about 10 speed steps the chuff rate goes from 4 chuffs per revolution to 7 or 8 chuffs per revolution making it sound like its going super fast when its goes half that speed.
I like the steamer
Nice!
7:08 i see a amtrak toaster in the backround lol
Bachmann has really come up. Love the American flyer white walls. Don't want any engine with black walls yuk! Great looks and sound!
The white walls has zilch to do with AF !!
It's rare to see a plastic model of a Grand Trunk Western stem loco. I might have to order one to add to my collection of Canadian National family locomotives.
An impressive steam locomotive from Bachmann, i would like to get the B&O scheme version, enjoyable product review- tom.
It sounds like southern 4501
4:35 tell me that doesn't sound like 4501s whistle.
WTAF it does
They probably recoded 4501’s whistle for this one or a southern three chime whistle
Had to look up the whistle for 4501's whistle And yea it does
Also sounds a bit like rbmn 425's current whistle.
This engine has 3 whistles to choose from, they are a Hancock Short Bell 3 Chime Road mix, that one is the default whistle. The other ones are a Nathan 5 Chime Road Mix & a Reading 6 Chime.
no safety valves....?
Does this still make chuffing sound if it is only run on DC, with a simple speed and direction controller and nothing else?
Yes you won’t have access to other sounds however
This looks like a pretty solid model. I've always admired the Grand Trunk Western steam locomotive scheme. I wish Bachmann would make a Southern Railroad version of this model. Even though it wouldn't be exactly realistic, it would still be awesome if they made a Ps-4(Like #1401 in the Smithsonian) or even a smaller pacific like the Ps-2. Both classes are attractive engines.
I have this exact one. Can you add a smoke system to it?
I wish Bachmann hadn't cut the dynamo and water sounds, those might have not been much, but just little things like that take away quality. The Bachmann Prices are soaring in the 300s, but the old ones with actually better sound decoders were cheaper. Bachmann needs to stop with all the budget cuts! They have to have enough money to make better decoders. I love the company, but some of these new 2-8-0 and 4-6-2 models are different. But Thumbs up to Bachmann for trying to make better, cheaper trains.
RIP 5629
Is there a closer draw bar position ? And is there a deck plate ?
😍😍😍😍🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩
What kind of whistle does it have?
I would probably get this for $100 the most
$250 is a more reasonable price
on trainworld they are going for 160 right now.
This cost more than my bachmann pere marquette 2-8-4 birkshire and this is a freaking 4-6-2!
Definitely worth it tho! Its a workhorse!
would be nice to see it run ???
Will this work on dc
How long is this locomotive and tender?
So long...
No run By :(
It does look very much like the real Grand Trunk #5629! Disappointing that it doesn't have a detailed cab and crew figures to name a few of the cons about it. But at least it looks like a convincing model of a Grand Trunk USRA Light Pacific if you want to have an HO scale model of one, unlike with the Bachmann Southern #630.
Ok i'm a DC Dinosaur. I hate the DC sound. I finally decided to just snip one of the wires to the speaker. Ever since then life has been great. Women ask why I'm all smiles now. I stopped cussing at ignorant drivers (for now).
This or broadway limited, I would go broadway limited
*Railfanning during Covid: videoing your model trains in realistic views.
Does it not have coupler clink? Thanks for the review James! Cheers, Dan
$250 IS still expensive for most people with retail and restaurant jobs!
Jesus Loves You
I mean no offense to Bachmann in the following statement, but this has to be said. Almost $400 for a manual request, not a manual that comes with the engine, minimal detail, a sound decoder with limited functions, a quick start guide that most of the functions don’t even apply to this engine like dynamic brakes, and a locomotive made by the BEST repairs policy company. I don’t mean to say Broadway is better, but I wonder how much a Bachmann engine with a nice decoder, good details, and cv values/function list would cost.
John McCardell Yeah, I was just saying I think it’s crazy that they would even think about charging that much.
Hey , James we need your help. You have Walthers ear , we who model Amtrak want to know why have Walthers ABANDONED US ?
Would be nice if they'd sell them without the noisemaker, but I guess HO scale is going Lionel now.
"Going Lionel Now"? Oh come on, that's such a dumb and even somewhat offensive thing to say. Sound is a great feature since it makes the locomotives sound realistic; and if you don't like having sound, you can shut it off. Without sound, you're always forced to not have sound, which is restricting and not prototypical.
Except that the "sound" the manufacturers are gouging us for doesn't sound realistic. It's tinny and thin and does not accurately reflect what the locomotive is doing at the time. If you've ever watched a steamer coast or a set of diesels ramp up to move a big train you'll know what I mean. Why am I forced to pay for an unrealistic noisemaker that sounds like an electric shaver? And even if I do remove the noisemaker, the design of the model has been compromised to accommodate the decoder and speaker, usually with a smaller motor and weights, so it pulls like crap.
Sound is the biggest scam in model railroading right now. Manufacturers love it because they can charge us $100 extra for $5 of Chinese electronics.
"Noisemaker that sounds like an electric shaver"? Another dumb quote from you for sure. Even though Bachmann might not have the most prototypical sounds on all of their locomotives, at least their USRA Light Pacifics sound like real steam locomotives in at least a general sense and the sounds are clean from background noise. My point with the last comment I said is you can mute the sound with the remote control or the volume screw on the locomotive (whichever one it has) if you don't want to run it with sound.
You can find engines without sound from them. If you look on trainworld they have the Berkshires without sound for like 100 bucks.
Big boomer alert right here.
I’m not a fan of how jerky these locomotives are at 1 and 2 speed steps.
That's Botchmann for you.
pdbnc Bachmann.
John McCardell also servicing them won’t help. It doesn’t need lubracation. It’s an electric jerkiness.
@John McCardell I agree, all engines need be run in, even brass!
you sound so unmotivated like you dont care about this and want to get it over with
