- Metric ft. Brie Larson performing “Black Sheep" (Brie Larson Vocal Version) from Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World.
Pre-Order Expanded Digital Edition & Stream “Black Sheep” Now: scottpilgrim.lnk.to/digiID
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World stars Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Kieran Culkin. Cera’s title character, smitten by Ramona Flowers (Winstead), must battle her seven evil exes who are out to kill him. Interwoven into the plot is a plethora of fictitious music groups acting out the performances of original compositions by real recording artists. Under the direction of producer Nigel Godrich (Radiohead, Paul McCartney, U2), Beck provided the music for Scott’s low-fi garage band Sex Bob-Omb, Canadian synth-rockers Metric did the same for The Clash at Demonhead (fronted by Brie Larson), and Broken Social Scene wrote and recorded for Crash and the Boys. In some cases, the finished songs incorporate actual vocal and instrumental contributions from the actors who appear in the film.
The entire process took two years of Godrich’s life, during which he essentially cast ultimate fantasy bands and got non-musician actors to learn their respective instruments with the aid of Chris Murphy from the band Sloan. The original soundtrack went to #2 on the Billboard soundtrack chart and includes songs by Frank Black, Beachwood Sparks, Black Lips, T. Rex, Blood Red Shoes, The Rolling Stones and The Bluetones.
Composers: Emily Haines, James Shaw
Directed and Produced by: Edgar Wright

Emily's version is a lot more quiet, subtle rage. Brie's version is a lot more up-front and "Look at me now, jerk!".
Right. Like Envy's rubbing it in Scott's face that she's gotten successful and he's not along for the ride.
Well said
I saw someone say that it’s a reflection on how she treated him, and how Scott treated Knives. He hates Envy for treating him the way she did, but then he turned around and did the same thing to Knives.
I feel kind of differently. I listen to metric's original when im in a bad bitch punk mood & brie's when im in a sexy girl indie mood
Edit: despite knowing the context of the characters in the movie, this is just how it feels to listen to them to me
Also i just wanna add that i think a lot of you think like OP because youve seen both brie's acting and metric's performances so you can kind of visualize it

Only reason this movie worked for her is because envy has 1 tone, 1 thought and no need for inflection. She's also a complete bitch, all of this is perfect for Larson, she was born to play envy. Doesn't make her good. Maybe it's time for you to rewatch her in the mcu and pay attention to her acting, she's a mean Keanu reeves without the charisma.

Agreed, she should sing more and talk less.

Maybe *I've* been hating on Brie Larson too hard for too long...
I'm going to listen to Brie Larson's album. I'm hoping that I like it. I never knew that she did this song with Metric, and I absolutely love her version. Back in the day, I always thought Scott Pilgrim should have "Gone for that Blonde" - and now like a decade later I find out that she was Brie Larsen (!)
Anyway, I think she deserves a listen - and probably a lot less hate.
What an interesting and unusual day this has been.
It's always best to separate hate from acknowledgement. I don't care for Larson and think she is a moron, but her voice is magnificent@@TheMykeShow
Is it me or Brie just looks exactly like Misa from Death Note?
In the comic she has red hair and the author didn't want them to make her blonde in the movie but they did it anyway, that's why in the anime she has red hair and not blond ;)

In the comic Scott broke up with not long after his 'date' with Ramona where they walked through the park.
The movie dragged that plot thread on throughout the whole story, where as it was a relatively minor part of the comic.
Brie would be perfect to play Misa in a live action Death Note. Especially in that outfit it’s just giving those vibes.
Fr!!
From what I heard before, since the movie was leaning more onto making the live action envy look more like emily haines, brie took inspiration from Misa for her look/costume

I love how the lights come on the moment Scott and Ramona put together what’s going on, and Envy is standing there and starts singing as if to say: “Yeah, that’s how this is going to play out.”
I was gonna talk about the masterful use of shot reverse shot in the original section of the song but I really love this edit. It uses the sections of the song to match it well to their energy; the ‘oohs’ you can see the emotional transition from knives (who goes from a look of wonder to emptiness) to Ramona (drawing in with warmth but complications), the bridge creating not just tension but the feeling of Ramona almost being embarrassed and ashamed on the situation she’s been put into, at the start of the second verse it’s showing the idea how that soured vulnerability between Scott and Ramona with cuts of them avoiding eye contact, and by the lyric “You’ll take a ride from anyone” it suggests not only how Scott treats his relationships and maybe latched on to Ramona on a whim but sandwiches between that first look at her all the turmoil, fights, and heartache that moment of seeing her in person caused. It works extremely effective as a spark notes version of the movie.
No one responded yet but I wana say that was a extremely preceptive view of the video. I noticed the avoiding eye contact but i assumed it was her own view point of detaching from the audience showing her attitude of being better than them. Didn't see the cutting to Scott as anything but main character screen time. The Ooo cutting to knives was a solid catch as well.
If you haven't seen it I can heavily recommend the fan edit someone made of this exact song (I honestly wouldn't be surprised if they got the same person who made that version to make this). I can't remember the title but if you just search for "Scott Pilgrim edit" I can basically guarantee it'll show up!

I like this song choice because it leads you to believe maybe Scott is leaving some things out in his victimization of being dumped by her. We already see in the movie how he treats Chau especially her being young and naive. In the end he takes ownership of what he did wrong and thus he can move on with his life with Ramona but I believe he wasn't totally innocent in the breakup with Envy. Not sure if there's more to it in the graphic novel, if there is someone definitely let me know.
read the graphic novel, it ads so many new things to the story
it sort of implies it but it's mostly her fault
Having read the novels several times over, I can say that Scott plays the victim by the time of the main story and absolves himself of any responsibility and wrongdoing. While Envy had changed drastically while they were together and acted particularly cold to Scott (it's even implied that she cheated on him, though it could just as likely be Scott's paranoia), Scott has been lacking self awareness for so long and refusing to grow from a high school mindset that he and Envy, who is changing intensely, clashed so hard that they broke up. It's also important to note that we only see events from Scott's perspective, but we know he can be an unreliable narrator as he has been shown to literally convince himself of things that aren't true, so it's likely he caused even more pain than we know. The important thing is this: Scott has done this time and time again. He refuses responsibility and treats relationships as disposable. His emotional maturing over the course of the story is genuinely touching to me because I relate to that so much. This series has really helped me acknowledge my own flaws, yet I know to accept them and move forward rather than spend my life trapping them in a grave.
I think it is implied that ALL of these characters are toxic and self absorbed, but simply put, it makes for good entertainment.

In Scott Pilgrim vs the World, Brie Larson sang a song with lyrics about shape-shifting and outer space. 9 years later, she was fighting shape-shifters in outer space.

Big brain/PP Energy right there😎
Where's the song about being kidnapped in a basement for years raising a newborn child?
Or 15 years earlier depending on how you look at it...
Coincidence?
Gives me goosebumps. Every time! Hits that melodramatic sweet spot. For both rhythm, melody and emotions.
Brie should’ve been a rock star let’s be honest..
She's tried release an album but sadly its flopped
Let's rewind here. Brie was discovered around 2005 or a little bit earlier because some executive person heard her singing in her dressing room (she plays guitar) and she got offered a record deal. It made sense at that time. And the genre Pop-Rock also made sense. Think of Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, Ashley Tisdale maybe (or that wasn't pop-rock) and definitely Avril Lavigne (who wrote one song that ended up on Brie's only album "Finally out of P.E.".
Why didn't Brie Larson become a star? I'm not 100% sure. Maybe she didn't have that special something, the presence of a Hilary Duff (who to be fair had a hit show called Lizzie McGuire and then got a record deal, plus she also had a couple of hit movies at the time she released two albums - #1/#2 on the charts). Because Brie had no acting successes to show. She had been on "Raising Dad" until 2002, a one season family sitcom on The WB. Besides that only really small roles in random movies.
I remember that the singles didn't do that well and the album sold badly. I think Brie could have continued making music but then she would have had other people writing her lyrics (she wrote like half the first album herself) and she probably would have being told to dress up sexy and that was something Brie didn't want. Also Pop Rock was on the decline. I mean, since 2010, Rock is dead in the mainstream. EDM took over the US by storm. Chances that Brie would have had a steady career in music were very slim and are slim in general. Although she struggled for a long time to get even small roles (first leading role in 2013's "Short Term 12" which got shot in 2012, when Brie turned 23 while shooting the movie), for her acting was her dream, and fortunately she became a star. ❤

Brie won an Oscar before the age of the 30. She's one of the youngest to ever do it. I think she did just fine but I will admit she would be an awesome rock star as well.

Bro sabes cuál es el nombre de esa serie?
Weird as it may sound, I liked the scene where Scott says, "Goodbye, Natalie," and she responds, "No one ever calls me Natalie anymore." (or something similar) Written out, it sounds like she's telling him "Don't call me that," but in the scene, you could tell she was touched that he still calls her Natalie. An actual good closure scene.
Also, props on nailing the delivery of the line "You just headbutted my boyfriend so hard he burst."
Утоли мои печали, Натали
@thatjeff7550 It's Scott's response "Maybe they should." That gets me every time.
Good thing most people don't watch movies written out
"It's Dr. Robotnik!"
"Nobody calls me THAT anymore..."
She is such a talented singer and actress! This song has such an incredible flow of highs and lows and no one can deny that beat isn't catchy. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to listen to this for the 80th time 😂❤
😅 This song is addictive! Honestly, I'm not the biggest rock fan. When I first heard the song, I didn't like it much. Only the chorus. But it grew on me and now it's engraved in my memories. So catchy, so well sung, the video editing is beyond words and Brie's outfit combined with her movies and her amazing singing are just out of this world.
Still I cannot believe that this is the same Brie that has accomplished so much a couple of years later. It's also the same Brie that was Princess Valhalla probably around the same time (~2009).
I think this chapter is probably the best part of the film; there's a lot of buildup and foreshadowing through the first 1.5 acts, and I think it's where the stakes are most personal for everyone, the comedy is sharpest, the action is strongest, etc. Not that the movie stops being good or anything afterwards, but I definitely think this 15 minutes or so is its peak.
Gotta say the vocals by Brie Larson are actually really good. I like her voice.

One of the things I've always loved about this song is how perfectly it fits Scott's story. It's true that Ramona was awful to all her exes but she knows and acknowledges it to a point. With Scott, while he was awful to his exes too, rather than admit it like Ramona, he instead plays the victim and as the song says "shapeshift, and trick the past again" so that when you see the story solely from his side, everyone else looks bad. And that's one of the major points in the story is Scott finally growing up and acknowledging his mistakes. Of course, you don't get as much of all that in the movie like you do in the comics, but it's there a bit. Anyways, this is a really great song and I've always loved both Metric and Brie's versions!
IIRC, the movie was made while the fifth volume was still being written, so that element -- which ultimately made getting together with Ramona make more sense -- wound up getting lost somewhat.

A singer is a sort of actor... and Brie acting is superb!!!
brie larson's version will always be nostalgic
I never saw the movie 🤷♂️ for me Emily’s version is nostalgic. I feel like many of us feel this way.
@@brightstarlit nah bro, this is the only version accepted, who cares about Metric if more people watched this movie than heard a punk band?
@@brightstarlit I respect Metric, but for the time being, we need Brie's version to carry thru & past all this chaos. Peace.
@@dulpus wow you dont desearve to hear this song if you dont care about the band
@@dulpus well i mean.. metric wrote this song. you wouldn't have brie's version or even scott pilgrim in general without them. envy was based off of emily haines, which is why they changed her hair from red to blonde in the movie to make the association more clear.

Filmed at Lee's Palace, the venerable Toronto alt-rock venue. I've seen many great shows there over the past 30 odd years. This film is a love letter to old Toronto... my hometown. A lot of us local boys are real 'Scott Pilgrims' vs 'the World' nowadays...
Usually I dont care about music parts in movies but damn this one is still so cool. This entire movie is so well directed.
Wow, didn't know Brie Larson can sing. She sings really good.
she sings better than she acts....she should be a singer and quit acting

Ok but why is no one talking about how she is literally cosplaying Misa Amane Editx(shit how did people actually find this?).
I know right I was like "Misa?"
I wish she had the double pigtails tho
Probably because we were talking about it when the movie came out
Oh shiiiiit. Now that you mention it she does look like she's cosplaying as her.
@@rilohoneu6030 she does
As much as I love Brie’s vocals, it’s Metric’s writing that makes this track. I love Metric and what’s actually being said in their songs. This was so beautifully written and Brie did amazing with it.
Shame it took so long for the approval of the cover

Scott Pilgrim vs The World is one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces. Edgar Wright is a genius.
He is amazing
Calm down kid.
If only they didn't cast Michael Cera as the lead character..
Ricardo666 who would you pick for the Role of Scott?
@@doopness785
I honestly can't say. It has to be somebody who is nerdy and awkward at times but also cool and somewhat adorable. Cera is nerdy and awkward but none of the rest, at all.
Justin Long might have been the better choice back then. But a perfect Scott Pilgrim is yet to be found imho.
Now when is this gonna be on spotify?

I think Emily Haines did a great job on the original track, it's a cool song that's on rotation in my playlists. But Brie's Performance of this track isn't just Brie Larson singing a metric song. It's Envy Adams snarking her way across the stage in all her successful glory shoving it right in Scott's face. This part of the film creates tension that ramps up as the song plays out, building up to a pretty epic fight backstage. This is her 'gotcha' song. Scott Pilgrim is, by definition, NOT a musical. But this one tiny little aspect of the film kind of is. The reason fans like this song is the same reason that we listen to tracks from Hamilton or Avenue Q(excuse me, I'm old). This is a small part of a complete character that we never saw in the film or comics. It was really cool of Metric to release the full version. Because it's not Brie stealing thunder from Emily Haines, it's the complete performance of Envy Adams posturing like a super villain.
that is an interesting take on this. I really didn't think about it this way even though I was aware of it subconsciously. thank you for pointing it out.
I have a different take on it from a different angle that has nothing to do with the point you make. your point is both well taken and obviously true.
I feel bad for Emily Haines because she wrote this song and has performed it for years it is in every respect her song. then along comes the movie and Brie Larson playing Envy Addams and she sings it. and her voice is just better and stronger. she sings it in Emily's style and crushes her with half the fucking song! that has got to hurt.
perhaps looking at it from your perspective it is simply testament to Brie Larson's acting ability. possible. but I really do think her voice is just a bit better and stronger than Emily's. and then again WTF do I know? just my opinion and we all know what those are worth.
@@flirtyguy34 honestly i like the original better. the vocals mesh far better with the music and it feels less like the vocalist stealing the show (I'm aware that is the exact point of this scene in the movie). So I think it ends up being subjective.
Yep. I loathe Brie Larson as a human being, but adore this version for all of the reasons you have mentioned. Must be that I love Envy Adams?
@@alaricgoldkuhl155 just make sure you dislike Brie for the right reasons. A lot of people honestly hate her over a single interview that they 100% took out of context. But I respect your opinion and your right to have it.
@@obvs...5752 unsure what you mean but, for all of Brie’s shortcomings the original guy posting nailed it, this isn’t original vs movie, it’s Envy Adams vs. Scott and unfurling the rest of the story, hence it’s critical to this movie and in this case only Brie’s version with Brie Larson as Envy could pull it all off, it’s one of the many things that makes the movie perfect.
I really don't give a flying turd about what anyone thinks of Brie. You just can't deny that she does a great job here.

Regardless of what some thought of "Scott Pilgrim vs The World", it became almost an instant cult classic, and same goes for Brie Larson's performance of Black Sheep. Great song by Metric no doubt, but Brie's version also rocks!
Even Brie's version sounds like it was autotuned.
