    YES! The
second Peel session by Leatherface, one of my 10 favorite punk bands.
From up north in Sunderland, Leatherface formed around August, 1988. Tremendous musicianship, songs with very unusual, often poetic lyrics open to myriad interpretations and Frankie Stubbs' wonderful emotional singing are hallmarks of this amazing band.
They can play anything from hard charging punk to slow, dense, layered, majestic songs. Games turned up on their Compact and Bijou e.p. (1993) and this performance is probably the first time the public heard this song. Books was included on their fourth album, Minx (1993) Not a Day Goes By is from what many consider their early masterpiece, Mush, released in 1991. I Can't Help Falling in Love was included as a 7" single in the first pressing of the Minx LP. Even I don't own this one. And to conclude this Peel they dug back to their 1989 debut album, Cherry Knowle, for the song Cabbage.
This great band broke up around 2012, calling it a day after almost 25 years. They released over ten albums and numerous singles and e.p.'s. Their last album, The Stormy Petrel (2010) is wonderful, showing no decline in creativity.
If I had to pick only one group that gave me hope punk was not dead after 1990 it would be Leatherface. While most of the recent corporate/lawyer controlled "punk" bands have faded from memory, the music of Leatherface has only gained in stature over the years. Time will certainly allow more people to discover this extraordinary band which, IMO, resides in the pantheon of world music

Another great great punk band. I'd love to moan how underrated they are but more and more people are discovering them. Any band with the nuts to name themselves after the beloved chainsaw wielding behemoth better be able to back it up and this band do it to the fullest and always have.

Just out of curiosity did you meet him in Sunderland ? Back in the early 80s I read Paul Theroux's travel book about the UK and according to him Sunderland was one of the poorest and most uninhabitable looking places on the entire island. And economically the north has gone nowhere but down since. Imagining the aftermath of Brexit is pure uncut nightmare fuel. My own prediction is open bloody class warfare. I'm just curious if Sunderland now has that South Bronx ambience Liverpool had when I naively decided to visit in the 90s.

@@teddydog6229 Yes, I met him in Sunderland, although I'm not from there.
Everywhere in the UK looked run down and decrepit in Thatcher's Britain as I remember.

I organized a show for Leatherface in my hometown in Belgium in 2001, after they released horsebox. 23 years later i drive down to Düsseldorf to see Frankie play live acoustic Leatherface songs in some small pub. Went up to chat with him after the show and he totally remembered me. Couldn’t believe it. What a legend. Leatherface has been my favorite band since the early 90’s. No one has topped them. Husker Du comes close… but no.
