What a great player David Wagstaff was.All the Man City players were very sad when Wolves came in for him.One city player told me that if Malcolm A,alison had have been there then he would NEVER had let Waggy go.But now,R.I.P.Waggy.You were a great player.(from a Man City supporter)

Great words mate, for a true Wolves great. Manchester City's loss was clearly our gain. And, incredibly, England's loss too. The sound at Molineux every time Waggy received the ball...? Buzzin' ay the word...

Thanks for that.I don't think he was a high earner when he retired ,as he played when talent was not fully appreciated with the great rewards , unlike today when mediocre players can get millions for playing. All the money washing round the game is killing it.It is only those clubs with a rich "sugar daddy " who can compete with the best.Man City have gathered a great haul of trophies by employing one of the best coaches in the world, who bought some of the best players in the world. In the not too distant future the top 8 or 9 places in the Premiership will be taken by the 8 or 9 richest clubs(via a sugar daddy).Newcastle have just been adopted by a Middle East oil millionaire and one of there directors said recently,"Now we can start buying players."..?.nuff said!.. BTW do you think Wolves can hold on to that good manager they have.He has done incredible things without spending a kings ransom.

This is amazing because just have no recollection of this whatsoever of a 3rd place playoff match. I remember Leeds beating Wolves and Arsenal losing to Sunderland.

I was at this game which was played at the start of the next season (something to do with the energy crisis, I think).

This is the way football SHOULD be...how I miss the 70's! Today's pathetic Premier League is BORING...a bunch of overpaid foreign prima donnas who earn more than the Prime Minister, yet fall over if you so much as look at them. The games back then had real atmosphere and excitement, you can tell just by watching this video!

It was a different time, you can't bring it back.. it's what makes memories, life's like that.
The kids now will be pining for these days in the future 😊

There's actually a small crowd and some of the defensive mistakes are laughable.

They should bring back this 3rd/4th play off game, maybe play it the Friday before the cup final! There were a lot of quirky exhibition games going on back then, anyone remember the Texaco Cup? The first time sponsors started to get into the game..
And it does look strange to see Alan Sunderland play AGAINST Arsenal, but of course he made his name at Wolves.

Was this the first first-team appearance of a black player for Arsenal? Possibly.
Blockley looks even worse 40 years on. Hard to believe anyone thought he could replace McClintock.
Sunderland is unrecognisable. No sign of a beer belly.

I know Batson was in the 70/71 squad that won the double, not sure if he played that season but I don't think this was his debut.. went on to make his name at WBA but Arsenal and West Ham were the first to embrace Black players in the modern age, for sure.

An odd concept, a third-place play-off match at a non-neutral venue. Was this actually official, or just a pre-season friendly marketed as a something more substantial?
Also, did Wolves ever wear these shirts - a gold v-neck with a black collar - on any other occasion?

    • @Stubrit
      @Stubrit Před 7 lety

They played it at the stasrt of the next season, due to the energy crisis. The Wolves shirt was the standard shirt at the time.

The FA Cup had 3/4 place paly-offs between 1969-70 and 1973-74. This was the penultimate one played as it was a complete waste of everyone's time.
