This is a good one. My friend who has been kickboxing for 7 years had his first fight recently and as soon as he stepped into the ring and saw his opponent, i was like, oh no, this man has no record but he's looking way too confident. It turned out he was a Dutch champ in the green belt division in Kyokushin. He demolished my friend with his low kicks and then he got slept with a headkick. It was horrifying to watch to be honest. Always check the background of your opponent is the best thing i heard so far, cos ego might take over sometimes.

This is the most important video you have ever done and I’m so grateful someone in your position has spoken about this unspoken dirty side of the sport. This type of shit ruined my career and you are so correct that coaches don’t always give a shit no matter how much you think they love you. Thank you Gabriel, newbies of the sport, take note of this video. It will help you not become a bitter ex fighter like me.

So sorry to hear it. That's cruelty, not "just lack of consideration". It's also not really surprising that there are inconsiderate people in competitive VIOLENT sports that spin around money. Someone else on YT talked about how "protective" equipment such as helmets and gloves only increase the risk of injuries. It's to sell boxing as a "safe" martial art. He suggested bare knuckle fights. I'd agree and suggest to do fights only for points, not to make the opponent to pass out or get seriously injured. Too hard punches are more risky for bare knuckles and the ones that decide to throw them anyway must loose points and also get instantly disqualified if any dirty tricks done. If part of the crowd is bloodthirsty psychopaths and sociopaths that WANT to see KO and violence then they should have a separate league. Martial artists that want to compete for skills and mentality should have a safe space where EVERYONE follows the rules and the fights are more for the sake of techniques rather than seeing who's done sooner from severe beating because it's just stupid.
It is really annoying and sad that you and other athletes that didn't sign up for nonsense had to deal with it 💛 I hope you find joy in other activities and live a fulfilled life 🙏

@@General_Jist Spent my entire teens and 20s training and competing, was thrown to the wolves many times, picked up my fair share of injuries, competed for a world title eliminator, was put in against my opponent who missed weight by 10kg and wasn’t told this by my coach who I thought loved me like family, eventually I’ve spiralled and just hate the sport. I don’t compete anymore but I train just fitness to stay somewhat healthy

Gabriel Varga is the type of martial artist one can emulate without shame, just a fair but realistic guy. The other background cross-benefits are real.
We have 2 guys who started at roughly the same time about a year ago in a boxing group I've joined: one has an extensive high-level competitive BJJ background and the other absolutely no background in any combat sports at all. The difference is night and day; they're both good but in sparring the Jitz guy has the peace of buddha and a gas tank the size of Jupiter.

#6 don't fight known dirty fighters, unless you like to get injured. If you want to punish them, and you know you can, go ahead and take the fight. But generally those guys are to be avoided. You don't need to be blinded by eye pokes, damaged knees by someone who won't let go of a heel hook or knee bar even when you tap, etc.

    The last point!
I did a muay thai charity smoker as an almost 40 year old. I had some previous wrestling, bjj, and mma experience. Also, first time back on the mat/in the ring in 15+ years. I went up againt a 22 yr old kid that was a HS and collegiate track athlete and former boxer. We were still considered 0-0 in the event, but background matters. The distance management, handspeed, reflexes, overall output threshold.
The moment 1st bell rang, I remember getting tagged in the middle of a combination and being like, "wtf I don't know what that was. This young lion is fast".
I remember being so exhausted and body language was showing. Tried not to, but it was hard especially when his corner recognized it and told him to push the pace. He went up 10-8 both rounds and by the 3rd round my corner knew I had to go for a knockout. He dropped me 3 times and secured the TKO. Hindsight, I probably could've clinched more and my guard got sloppy from being tired, but needless to say it was an uphill battle. Also, ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR CORNER/COACHES. My corner saw something that I didn't and wanted me to prod with 1-1-2s/teep/low kick, but I didn't do it because of the false self perception I had of being the shorter fighter possibly losing that exchange to a taller and faster fighter.
But like sparring, sometimes the matchmaking is just brutal. My coach, who also cornered me in aforementioned bout and a former middleweight Glory Pro, I can tell you that he definitely gives me noodle legs when we spar. Majority on accident, but sometimes because I'm being stubborn about defense and I just want to trade in the pocket so that's how he teaches me a lesson haha.
He also said that he had double digit exhibition matches, scrimmages, and smokers, before competing for a sanctioned promotion. Look at TBAs, sure it's an amateur competition which has classes divided by fight records, but you have people that have literally been training for over a decade and they're still in highschool but are considered 0-0.
Make no mistake, you don't have to be a professional fighter to be a killer. You could be attending a gym where you're constantly sparring national or world champions but never have an "actual" fight. Like Gabriel said, they're everywhere.

I know this is geared towards people who want to fight professionally, but I think people could also use tips on knowing when not to fight somebody on the streets. Everyone who starts a fight with me has zero concept of my skill level, and it's always a one sided lesson being taught to impulsive, childish people trying to mess with me. They can't see the signs, and they get themselves beat up by trying to hit me.

Not a martial artist, boxer, wrestler. Just a regular dude that played football for 10 years and got into some scraps in high school and college. 5 thugs at a bar - got a broken rib, but crushed a couple of the guys and lived. Guy who pulled a knife - threw him on the ground and ran. Another guy that pulled a knife - walked away. Offensive lineman looking guy - walked away. Big ass country dude on the side of the road - walked away. Super big muscle guy at a bar hitting on my girlfriend - smacked the guy into bathroom wall and knocked him out. Guy with sawed off shotgun - went nose to nose with him with gun under my chin and he backed down. College fight knight against an amateur boxer - got my butt kicked.
Age, the amt of alcohol, and my mental state played into these decisions, but sometimes I saw something that just made me walk away 🙂. Lucky to be alive, but don’t regret any of it.
