      I agree with several comments about not getting sufficient respect via time spent on HomeOS/HomePodOS or whatever they will morph the name into. Most of this presentation is clearly meant to focus on the updates to all of their OSs. Granted, that may be why they don’t give it a proper OS name - it allows them to ignore.
      Apple knows their ecosystem is magnetic: it sucks in users from others areas of the Apple universe and adds new sales. As such, spend the extra 5 minutes to highlight just a few awesome feature for the Home, coming out in the new SomethingOS.

    I was really hoping to see some of these enhancements for Homekit. Well, seems like we will have to wait longer :(
    1. Pan and tilt controls and higher resolution support (2K atleast) for homekit security cameras (Aqara, Eufy, etc). About time!
    2. Better representation of activity log data in terms of graphs, timeline, etc (eg. how Aqara app shows the data)
    3. Using Apple TV state in automations. Eg. Perform some action If the Apple TV goes to sleep or wakes up.

    Do you think that we’ll need to buy new robot vacuums or will our existing ones, like for example my Roborock Q5, work right away?
    I was hoping for more HomeKit controls like you see in 3rd party apps. And being able to store device codes and save snapshots of configurations.
    Integration with my wall-mounted EV charging equipment would have been neat, if anything to monitor usage and recognize patterns. Otherwise the equipment app and car app pretty much tell you everything and let you control key aspects of each device.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před měsícem +1

      Thanks for watching. This will mostly depend on the vacuum manufacturer. I believe Roborock told me at CES that all of their newer robot vacuums, like those released this year would get a Matter update. I doubt older vacuums more than a year or so will get the update.
      I believe Matter 1.3 added support for EV charging equipment, so maybe it’s something that we’ll eventually see. It will be interesting to see how, and if, Apple can can keep up with the Matter updates by bringing support to these new devices in the Home app and HomeKit.

    What I’ve been waiting for is more Siri or HomeKit control for the Apple TV. For example a way to control directional inputs by voice, or to simply resume what you were last watching. Or as another person mentioned indicating the state of the Apple TV. All of this has workarounds but they could be a lot simpler

    • @ShaneCreates

      I agree. Would love to see the Apple TV act more like other HomeKit accessories and give us more automation capabilities. Siri is decent already in this area though. 09:25 about "Hand-free unlock with UWB locks": this was confusing me at first since hands-free unlock with iPhone or Apple Watch was already the basis of Home Key, which was announced before and is not a new feature of iOS 18. But in fact, as you explained well in your separate YT short, the new feature provides an AUTOMATIC REMOTE UNLOCK when you come back home and you're still a few feet away from the door, using UWB. By comparison, hands-free unlock with Home Key used NFC not UWB and required swiping the iPhone or Apple Watch a few inches from the lock sensor.
    This is the exact same evolution as Car Key especially in BMWs, which first used NFC near the car door (BMW Digital Key) and now uses UWB at a distance (BMW Digital Key Plus).

    • @rob_over_9000

    I’m torn on the uwb unlocking. Great convenience but is it too great a security risk? I’d feel safe with it in my neighborhood, but I can see some locations where this would be risky. I guess like all things everyone should assess the risk for themselves and decide whether to use the feature.

    • @ShaneCreates
      @ShaneCreates  Před měsícem

      Yea, it looks like it’s a part of “express mode,” which can be turned off. I think UWB would be much more reliable and secure than using geolocation, like some locks do now. Six feet is pretty close and we know that UWB is very precise, which is good.

  • @TheIronWaffle
    @TheIronWaffle Před měsícem

    Spatial AirPlay is very welcome. Love it. But they still don’t support lossless AirPlay? To get lossless to a hifi system requires either dongles or connecting either a Mac or an Apple TV (which can mean putting a TV in a room where one might not want dedicated screens.

      I’ve already installed the beta on some devices. I’ll certainly continue looking around to see if anything else jumps out in the week and next few months.

    Thanks for the more-informative-than-dub-dub update, Shane. I get it - HomeKit is kind of Apples red-headed stepchild. We need to keep plugging along, celebrating the little wins. Maybe one of these days, Tim Crook will wake up and realize how many of us there are out here running our homes from HomeKit… In the meantime, you and a handful of other YT folks keep them honest.

    Looks like no AI on HomePods...

    It never detects when every family member has left the house. Makes Homekit rather useless, as my cameras never turn on when nobody is home.

    great review. I also watched the live event and was specifically looking for what the AI would do for home kit but it was not referenced. For me, having SIRI being able to have a natural conversation in the way I can with my ChatGPPT 4o on my iPhone would be amazing. If this could then enable me to better control my devices via HomeKit, or to set up programmes without the need to set up automations on my phone, ie it does it for me, then this would be game changing. I see AI as being the great equaliser, bringing the more advanced features of IOS and other applications to the masses, that previously would not have used them because they were unsure how to use them - ie reducing the geek level. I hope AI is coming to the speakers but I could also imagine that apple use this as an opportunity to release a new speaker that you have to buy first to get AI. I have a iPhone 14 Pro Max, and I was disappointed to see that I cannot get AI in IOS 18 as they are only making it available on 15. cheers John

      Thanks for the comment. I agree, Siri becoming more conversational would be a huge improvement for the smart home. Unfortunately, they didn’t showcase this in the keynote. I assume that Siri being more natural, personal, contextual, and allowing you to speak more naturally will be reflected across the ecosystem to include HomePods. I know this would make my wife happy especially. It’s hard to remember the correct names of all my smart home devices and scenes.

      That is a Matter thing, not HomeKit. Matter does not support adaptive lighting still, as far as I’m aware.
