I've always thought of this song as a mini-"Awaken," or perhaps "And You and I Part II." Many Yes fans spent the 80s and 90s wishing the band would someday return to the musical and conceptual glory of their 70s masterpieces, and ironically when they finally did with albums like "Magnification" and the "Keys to Ascension" studio tracks, many of those same fans failed to see it. But time has treated those albums well, and I think their brilliance is becoming more widely recognized. Great reaction!

For me, " (Live Symphonic) by Yes" is the best place to watch them perform RITUAL. It's SO much better that just listening to the studio version. The parts of the latter that have you scratching your head suddenly make sense.

@@jeffschielka7845 That's true and most unfortunate, but Yes were one of those bands that was not often filmed, especially back in the 70s and what little footage exists from back then is usually very poor quality. But soundwise, the rendition from _Yesshows_ was very finely mixed.

Wonderful reaction Lee, so glad you're diving into this phenomenal concert DVD. There are so many highlights, this piece is unquestionably one of them, one of their best compositions from the later years. The studio version on Magnification does have the orchestral arrangements as well as does most of the pieces on the album. From memory I think Rick was invited to be part of Magnification & the symphonic tour but he couldn't make it due to solo commitments so they went with the orchestra & no keyboardist for the studio album & drafted in Tom Brislin (current keyboardist for Kansas) for the tour. The concert DVD opens with a brilliant performance of Close to the Edge to a standing ovation! The Gates of Dilerium is absolutely breathtaking, so many other gems as well. Definitely check out Magnification, love the title track & Give love each day. Also Homeworld & It will be a good day from the album prior The Ladder. All the best!

No need to apologize for getting emotional when listening to any music, and doubly so for YES music since it is supposed to get you there - either insightful, introspective, enlightened, or out there - exuberant, joyous, dancing... For me, seeing younger folks "get it" is a treasure. Keep it up! There are more jewels in the YES treasure chest. Also, when ANYONE makes contact with that "Divine" that Jon talks about, they magnify the sacredness of the ground upon which they stand - yeah, I went there - and by doing that, by telling others, by making these YT videos for all to see, you relay the message that the Divine is all around us if we will only stop and see - you become the relayer....THAT SAID.... did you notice that it was Alan playing the piano during the opening of the song? It was his inspiration....! (Alan is also a primary composer of "Turn of the Century." Yeah, he's that good!) Keep it up my friend. It's good. Real good. And continue to make your own music: it's good for everyone's soul!

Glad this connected with you, Lee. Jon Anderson works really hard to deliver a message of enlightenment through his lyrics and music. I've bashed his more recent work for being a bit heavy on message but light on musical quality, but this one hits the mark better than most latter day Yes songs. It's not perfect (the ending is underwhelming, IMO), but this song is probably the pinnacle of the Magnification album, which is IMO the pinnacle of Yes albums over the last 25 years. BTW, one of the better things about this video is watching Tom Brislin having the time of his life. IMO he's 'the one who got away'. I'd take him on keyboards any day over Geoff Downes, but Geoff gives the band more legitimacy to use the Yes name without Jon or Chris around.

I've already commented on the song, but as a personal aside, try to always remember two old sayings: "Never let the basta*ds grind you down!" and the second is by Churchill, which goes, "NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER give up."
Never let the Basta*ds grind you down, and never give up.
As for spiritual advice, Be Present, and Be IN the World Without Being OF the World.

Hi Lee. Yes 'Symphonic Live' is one of the best Concerts Yes ever done. If you buy this on DVD, please take not the Blueray, buy only the normal DVD, here you have the possibility to hide the Icons and see the whole Show without the Icons, because the Icons are very disturbing (in my opinion). On the Blueray it is not (!!) possible. The whole Show 'Live in Amsterdam' (2001) Duration: 150 Minutes. It is a phantastic Concert. By the way: The Album 'Magnification was published on 9/11/ 2001. No Joke! ☺Kind Regards - Heinz (Munich). Greetings also to your Family. 🌳🥀🌱🌷✨❤

John's adorable but when founding member Peter Banks died (who named the band), all members of Yes posted their RIPs on their social media --- except Jon. As Rick Wakeman said, "John is trying to save the world, but he's doing it from another planet."
Jon is also good at holding grudges.

i have this video and I still can't work out where all the extra voices are, unless they're MIDIed through Tom Brislin's keyboard from his mic. Btw - you should check out the rest of the concert, because Tom is amazing, esp on Ritual and Gates of Delirium.

I suppose that if one really feels immersed "in the presence of" the Divine, anywhere you happen to stand would be "sacred ground". I envy people who can feel that way. The "Magnification" album is [arguably] the last time Yes achieved greatness. And some of the other tracks are even better. That and the title track do come off very well live.

    Nice review, Justin .
    Thank you.
I remember this album from my own punk and anarcho activist days in the eighties.
My room mate had the record and spun it a lot.
Never grew on me much then..., but now .
Don't you find the singer's voice VERY similar to Peter Hamill (esp. in his more angry solo work)! ?
If you like to check out some proggy/jazzy punk, check out NoMeansNo.
    Album: Wrong

Huh. Guess this must be from one of the later albums where I thought their lyrics became too straight forward and simple. They Kinda lost me around Keys/Magnification. Something changed in them (or me?!) and I saw it as too simple but without memorable melodies or hooks. Hmm. May be time to revisit the 2000-2010 music. Will have to watch this symphonic show too! Thanks for this listen fest on YesSaturday!

Yes put out multiple concert DVD’s in the early 2000’s and all of them are excellent.
And Magnification is the great overlooked Yes album.

I was also just thinking you’re mentioning a few time that you wish you could have seen them. You might consider going to see Jon if he comes around with the Band Geeks again, they are quite good. Look up some of those videos.

@pwethman1 It's actually beyond symphonic, Mirror to the Sky is a good example. I truly love the early stuff Yes did, but Mtt Sky really hit me after a few times through it. This coming from someone who bought their first Yes album in like 67 or 68. (Some haze to that time)
