Ask body builders before their show. They often have to go through a water cutting and limit their amount of eating to make sure their muscles are incredibly defined. When actors do shirtless scenes often they'll gradually dehydrate themselves for a few days to a week. So basically they went through that process, filmed the scene, then to celeberate that it was over they ate a bunch of junk food, and drank milkshakes and beer, which caused them to regain all of that water weight they initially lost. Which you can easily do in one day. For reference this is why boxers and MMA fighters tend to look bigger on fight night than they do at the weigh-ins. People are trying to call this guy out, but surprisingly this is spot on. After working out, your body goes through a "pump" phase where the muscles harden and it feels like your skin is tight, this is also has the added benefit of making you temporarily look more muscular. In addition, cutting out water is a quick way to lose weight and gain definition fast. It is not healthy but it's what most professional body builders do before a competition. The best way to lose this "water weight" is to stop drinking as much (Do not do this, it is bad for you long term) and sweat it off at the gym. These actors would have been bloated from the night partying and the best way to gain their physique again would indeed be to head back to the gym and do a vigorous workout. I don't understand why they didn't just use CGI to enhance the definition though if it was that big of an issue as Tom cruise said it was but meh whatever.
If you're on a strict cut for a long time and you uptake carbs you swell immediately but it's just water retention from rebound carbs. A small portion of carbs when timed right will boost vascularity. They didn't suffer very much considering nobody on thelst Beach was below 6% bodyfat.
