The E30 Ute is still going, I just needed a car to pickup and drop off parts. This is that car.
I picked this 2005 Holden VZ SV6 ute as a mostly complete car just missing some small interior bits, barely started and as anyone whos dealt with Alloytech engines can be a little dicey with possible timing chain issues. I took the gamble to see if I could get it running. Stick around to see how it all goes and if it costs me an arm and a leg or if I get out of it fairly unscathed.

This was so satisfying to watch. Your detective skills paid off. Plus a wee bit of loose change! Looks like the seller took out the K&N better air filter? Why don’t sellers vacuum and wash their cars before selling them on!? U.K. looking forward to your e30 truck build. 🇬🇧

Rule #1 check the oil before starting a suspect car bound for the wreckers #2 check the fuel level, # 3 stick a camera down the some of the spark plug holes and makes sure there isn’t any valve damage.

All solid advice, when I went to inspect the car first time they did start it but it was very rough. I know I got fairly lucky with the car and I’ve definitely learnt a few more tips for the next time I buy a car like this.

I’d also put a new PCV valve on for good measure... those HF V6 engines had a poor a PCV valvle design. There are even video’s on YT here on how to modify them.

@@blacknightcreations a new PCV valve (along with the mod- i think it's drilling a bigger hole into it) will go towards reducing the likelhood of oil sludging , as it is quite common in these V6 engines.

I have read up that the earlier alloytechs had thicker chains and are less prone to causing an issue. Like any car I’ll learn the quirks of it as I drive it.

I was watching for a cheap black holden Ute for months and this is the one that came up. Early VZs have a thicker chain so are less prone to having timing chain issues. Since I’ve gotten it running it hasn’t missed a beat!
