You review is useful.but the aforementioned papers aren't truly artist grade because none of hem are 100% cotton ....so the papers you mentioned for hobbyists not for a professional artist ..Professional artist mostly use strathmore 500 plate,stonehenge 260lb,fabriano artistico HP watercolor paper 300lb,or arches 300lb WC paper hold numerous layers of color pencils or charcoal...But i appreciate your effort on hosting this viseo for indian artist infact these papers only affordable in india
I think u r right in someway....but I don't think that 100% cotton is required in pencil colours or charcoal or pastels as 100% cotton is mostly preferred in water colour media because of its durability and textures. So it is not necessarily required in above mentioned media. Also Strathmore itself states that it's 400 series is for pro artist and for finished works. I am really happy and thankful to u that u wrote on my channel. My channel really need ur kind of knowledgeable people. Thanks.
One more thing Strathmore Bristol smooth 400 series is widely used and acceptable by all colored pencil artist....this is why I am also using that...but obviously 500 series is much better but their prices are so high to afford for beginners and for artists as well.... similarly for pastels canson mi touch is also very expensive so here artist are using canson mi teintes....
see there are even better papers tha strathmore 500 plate the reason i recommend hot press watercolor paper like arches are fabriano artistico and color pencil paper like stonehenge is they are 100% archival and perfect for commissioned work because it can withstand mutiple punishments like solvents,rubbing etc to enable multiple layers..however bristol you need to finish it fast because smooth surface doesn't give you much layers ...also there are many alternate papers than canson mi-touch like clairfonteine pastelmat,uart 400 grit,fisher etc,,i use a alternate cheap way i bought artspectrum pastel primer 8 different shades and apply a any good WC smooth paper 2 coats using brush or roller and make my own sanded paper is better than mi-touch
Sathish Kumar u r right...but I personally really don't prefer to use any solvent or mineral spirits to use with pencil colours. So I don't think wc paper works for me. You can see the artwork of other big artists like Jasmina susak or Heather Rooney. They also prefer to use Bristol for pencil colours. And pastel mat and uart are also on expensive side. And making my own paper is a great idea. Thanks.
There's no such thing as having to use a certain paper or materials for "professional" work and you're incredibly arrogant for suggesting that. The snobbery in the art world is unbelievable. Many of the top professional artists don't use high end, ultra expensive materials. They use what works for them and I can assure you there are a few brands of "high end" water colour paper I wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. It's like saying you aren't professional unless you carry a Luis Vitton handbag - pure snobbery that supports an industry that is overpriced and takes advantage of people who don't know better.

I've seen certain videos that claim vellum with fine tooth is better than smooth papers..as little roughness is required for better grip while drawing..strathmore 300 vellum fine Tooth one

Hi, when I do a couple of layers with colored pencils on canson bristol, it tears. Why does it happen? even with polychromos
You must really be rough on the paper or are using very hard pencils, because I use Canson Bristol and it's never happened to me

Try strathmore vellum 300 or brustro heavy medium 200gsm papers ..they're good for all color pencils and charcoal /graphite drawings if ur a beginner and need to practise or want a textured fine toothed surface .go for bristol if u prefer very smooth papers as it allows easy blending ..both are good but it depends which one suits u the most.
