A central tree which focused on your ability to harness several elements at once would be dope, and it would be a great place to put all the element swaps and element interactions. Bit of a sloppy approach, but if they don’t get it done quite right this time, then it’s a great starting point for a sequel game.

You could just have skills that would let you swap your elements faster, or give you a short-time damage boost after you swap, or let you get buffs by using differing elements on one enemy.
...and maybe that's also what crosscode did.
@@PauLtus_B Not to my knowledge/memory. In Crosscode you could already swap elements instantly. Using different elements would be good for a game that has a style meter.

As soon as I saw this game get announced in the PlayStation showcase I was like “dayuuuum, that looks cool as shit. But, it’s EA.” And while they’ve let Hazelight breathe freshness, I still have to be skeptical for what they put out. It’s nice to see that it might actually be a good game. Gonna watch this one closely.

So why should we care if it is an FPS, Twin Stick Shooter, or turn based game? He never gave a compelling reason why his exclusions are worthwhile to make "wizard" a genre rather than a theme.
@@codeender5980 Shooter and wizard games are clearly not mutually exclusive. As long as you shoot your combinations of spells in 1st-person then it's a shooter.
Agree, you can literally feel the ego-shooter vibe throughout the entire video. They clearly had guns in mind when developing this. The tried and tested EA formula.

This is basically Magic DOOM, and I'm all for it. I am not much of a fan of playing DOOM styled games (cause I'm bad and too busy to get better) but I will always, ALWAYS love the format when its done well

You should be able to use all 3 elements at the same time i'd say, and they should have different effects each, that all create a unique effect other than damage when combo'd into each other
If they had i'm sure you'd have mentioned them, but right now it all looks like the same thing with slightly different visuals.
Visuals do slap though, although the character designs and enemies feel a bit generic

@@draskopopovic9543 Arguably not. You get different spells and you get different guns in a shooter. In both you can acquire variants with unique powers. In both you mainly press M1 to shoot a damaging projectile whilst strafing and dodging enemies in an FPS view. It is essentially a typical shooter with cooler graphics.
A "wizard game" focuses more on the spellcasting part, such as creating wacky spell combos and using your mastery of elements to commit murder.

Thusfar my favorite magic experience in first person has been Dark messiah (Bioshock being second). There aren't many spells and you can't combo them, but:
- Spells feel really good and are mostly well designed. Remote controllable fireball that ragdolls enemies just feels awesome.
- Spells interact really well with the environment. You can push enemies to spikes, collapse crates on them or freeze the ground so that they fall to their deaths.
I think the problem is with the size of the spells' effects on the screen while they're beeing casted, coupled with the zoomed it in perspective, but once they leave the players proximity and travel through the air it looks fine. So they might want to tone down the size and number of particles at the casting phase other than it looks mesmerizing.

I think a good solution for visual clutter is to give enemies halos or silhouettes that are subtle but always visible, like dimmed down versions of Left4Dead or Vermintide (in which I only ever play as the wizard character, fancy that).
For wizard games to look up I would suggest Ziggurat 2. It's not truly a wizard game since you're mostly cycling between 4 weapon types being want, spellbook, staff and _gun,_ but the amount of variation and the pace of the game approaches very closely to Wizard of Legend, just first person. Since what's being shot isn't bullets for the greatest majority of the time, the developers could really go crazy with some of the effects your weapons could have and there's a good wealth of characters that bring a twist to it, but most importantly the game is a speedy and fun rogue-like.
This game really reminds me of Lichdom Battlemage... I hoped you'd talk abt that one in the wizard game videos

Some games have specific abilities that swap to a different weapon while attacking simultaneously. Could be something to help with the magic swapping issue

The system in any game I’ve played for switching weapons is doom eternal, since you can hold the button to choose between any weapon, or tap the button to switch to the last weapon you used. If this game uses that, I could see it being so fun to use all different kinds of magic

Sometimes a little chaotic, though. It feels like I never get to hear any actual song, it's just like clips and bits from loads of songs. Keep up the great work, you inspired me to play Wizard of Legend and that was the most obsessed I have ever become with a game in my life.
I'm weirdly proud that I recognized Sonny Boy's OST from 6:18, maybe one of my favorite animes ever. Hearing Sonny Boy Rhapsody later too cemented my guess.

First impressions as a viewer is that I immediately noticed how cluttered the screen was and I had no idea what was going on other than magic was booming. From the story summary it seems great but a story like that I'd honestly rather read than play, I got no problem with linear storylines, it's just really similar to so many other games but with the "what if we make it magic?" slapped on it. Visually it looks great, it looks freaking awesome, but it's pretty cluttered in fights as you mentioned. I'd probably still play it if it didn't require such high specs though because it looks fun but it's not something I'd play for story but more for just the challenge of unique combat and to master it, then leave it in my library until I discover it again like 3 years later.

So I just watched your videos about Wizard games and while not hitting all of the points, the insane customisation of Path of Exile allows for some crazy Wizard gameplay. The main issue you might have is the fact that you end up with one spell to kill them all instead of many, but that might change with PoE2 as they are changing some systems around to make it possible to have several, similarly powerful spells at once.

Shoutout from the future - using a "add more skill pages" mod as a magick archer/mage/sorcerer in Dragon's Dogma 2 feels absolutely stellar as a wizard game.
It looks like a boomer shooter but with magic. Sounds friggin awesome since I love boomer shooters and magic!
A simple fix for the objective and the guide dot is to just attach them to a button. Click on said button, and the game will show you your current objective and where to go.

You should check out Odin Sphere Leifthrasir. It is basically a more wizardy stylish fight game with built in input remapping. Also the story is very nice.

I've been extremely obsessed with Wizard games for as long as I can remember.
The whole video all I can think is that the dude's hand/gauntlet is fucking huge. Way bigger than it needs to be. It's like Batman taking up 1/3 of the screen in Arkham games, but with just a guy's forearm.

@@yalocaldex he's fine to live, but it's absurd to claim that it doesn't affect your opinion. There is a whole field of thought regarding this, and it's long been found that gift giving, even indirectly, sways people's feelings.
This was why people disregarded outlets like IGN to begin with. They rely on early access to games, they enjoy being flown out and rubbing elbows with developers they look up to, and if they ever push back hard enough the outlets know the access gets stomped out.
This was incredibly rampant in the 90s and 00s, and has only been pushed back on because CZcams gave people like Total Biscuit and Steph Sterling a platform. It's still the standard for traditional games press. I expect just the slightest bit of self awareness about the position of power that larger creators occupy. Anything less is letting the industry fall to shit, man.

I have never been happier finding another person that is obsessed with wizard games but just cannot find the perfect thing to stop the itching. Magicka was the only thing that came close personally but I think this concept is so unexplored and it would feel so incredibly intoxicating to feel the real shit when it gets developed eventually.
Have you tried Baldur's Gate 1 and 2? Splitting yourself in two, protecting yourself from magical weapons, creating tons of visual clones to sidetrack enemies while ripping their defenses of them one by one to finally have the earth rise up and entomb them. Stop time, reflect, mute, have passive precast spells that erupt based on triggers. There is no level scaling, so once you are powerful the filthy peons simple die from being too close to you, while you hunt all over the world for legendary items that will aid your build.
Unlike modern games where "spells" are basicly a bunch of differntly flavored nukes, the BG games has a real system of magic, where mages often fight by building temselves up and blocking or negating the other mages spells.

Honestly one of the best wizard games I’ve played is a relatively unknown game called nine parchments although that game is more in a category like 3d world where the fun comes from killing your teammates. Seriously try nine parchments it’s a amazing game.
