Price has been such a MASSIVE shift over the last 20-30 years. Back in the 90s to 00s Japan was considered one of the MOST expensive places to live or travel. Now, its almost considered a bargain destination (which is one of the reasons Japan is having such a massive tourist influx).

I laughed out loud about the unexpected answer of cherry blossoms, but loved the reasoning behind that response. This was a great collaboration!
Honestly, whilst the answer was quite surprising, the reasoning was weirdly not for myself. By which I mean I found that as he was explaining why the answer was Cherry Blossoms, I more or less was immediately agreeing with it.

I think it's very important that Americans learn the truth about why we chose to develop and use atomic weapons, the actual effects they had on Japan, and the truth of everything that transpired between the US and Japan from 1853 to 1941 that led to the conflict. In the US, we are taught during our educational years virtually nothing of substance that would implicate the US, if we are taught anything at all.

I remember watching Takashi when he was beginning with just a few subscribers. It is gratifying that he has gained such a wide audience now. I also remember your channel when you only had a few hundred subscribers and now grown into several youtube channels. CZcams has been an amazing way for Japanese to reach out to more people around to world.
As for questions for Takashi, I have always wondered why he chose to interview people as a format for his channel. Most of the other channels seem to focus on topics instead of interviews.

I laughed when Takashii called the cherry blossoms overrated. My Canadian city is twinned with a Japanese city and a lot of cherry trees were planted here at the time. We have hundreds of them. My sister-in-law has three in her backyard. I really want to visit Japan some day but cherry blossoms are at the bottom of the list. 😊 Great collaboration Shogo!

This was really interesting, to hear the small differences in how those who went to school in Hiroshima learn about the a-bomb compared to those from other parts of Japan, and to hear how that informed the way Takashii and Shogo present this information to their global audiences. As Takashii discussed the interview with the survivor, I was really looking forward to hear what Shogo was thinking. Great conversation.

What a great interview! Thanks so much for sharing! I agree with Takashii-san about the cherry blossoms. We have both ornamental cherry trees and regular cherry trees here in the states, and it always brightens my day to see them in bloom after a long winter. We get harsh winters where I'm at, so seeing all the trees and flowers in bloom is a wonderful way to chase away the winter gloomyness. Winter isn't always gloomy, but even so, seeing all the cheerful colors in the spring is therapeutic.
On another note, I'd love to learn more about the katana but I don't know if I have the budget for classes right now.

I totally get Takashi regarding the cherry blossoms. There's a big'ol sweet cherry tree growing right in front of my office window. And for about a week or so in a year it's in blossom. I've been watching that tree everyday in its changes through the seasons for years now. And I appreciate this particular tree blossoming way more than all the imported sakura trees planted in the local park.

I completely agree 💯 with Takashii in point 2, "what is your advice to those wanting to live in Japan?" As someone who speaks very badic Japanese when I talk to Japanese people especially those who live in Japan. They are very pleasantly surprised and immediately have a better impression of me. They respect you and are less guarded if they know you at least put in the time and work to learn a couple key phrases in Japanese. Like: Watashi wa "name" desu.

I live in Sweden,I said here in the past I visited Japan in 2012,would love it to visit again if I get a chance.
But between 2014-2016 we had many japanese students here in my small town. They where in love in our nature and sea. I live in a coastal small town.
I myself love to travel in general was in Ireland last year,lovely and friendly people,same with the japanese(atleast those I met).
I think one get learn more about others and oneself if one get the chance to travel,meet the people learn of the country,modern side and historical side. Enjoy and experience culture,say like food culture. One of the things people bond over is food to name a few things.

This was a very informative interview that helped me understand more about Japan! My biggest worry has been accidentally showing disrespect to a Japanese person if I travel there, but watching this has made me feel better about that. Watching the part about Hiroshima always brings tears to my eyes. I hope all of the people who went through that in Hiroshima and Nagasaki are at peace now.

Great interview! The cherry blossoms are beautiful, but along with the fleeting nature of beauty, the spectacle, the amounts of the trees and the immaculate care and curation of them into entire covered walkways is unique to Japan. But I like Takashii's answer to that.

We were recently in Japan and I instantly fell in love with the people and culture. We felt extremely safe and we were impressed with how polite and respectful people in society there were. I would love to live there for a while to really soak up the culture and see the country properly.

on this topic - my Japanese exchange student has goten the chance to see america from a smaller farm town in the midwest. I think some folks forget just how big the US truly is, and that there are many places where safety isnt even an issue -

What Takashii said about cherry blossoms struck a chord with me. Regarding hanami from that perspective, it can be transferred to human lives as well. Practice every day, just so that in one fleeting moment, you can put all that training to use. It gave me a new source of motivation for my karate practice.

I think the outlook on safety/sense of security and prices in Japan really depends on where one comes from. I visited Japan in 2012 for 2 months and it was both extremely expensive and didn't feel that safe. I was told by my Japanese boyfriend to not go outside alone past 10pm, I've seen numerous crimes being reported on the news, some I have never heard of in my home country, also lots of stalking cases. My point is, Japan might be cheap and safe compared to the US, but not necessarily so compared to some EU countries.

Excellent video! I agree with the advantages of living in Japan. I feel so fortunate to have moved here 28 years ago after I married a Japanese guy. Especially since I left America, which would have been so more stressful to live in. Back then no one knew, certainly I didn't, that Kyoto would be packed with foreign tourists and foreign people even ask me on social media for advice on how they can move here.

I feel the same way about the cherry blossoms. I have cherry blossoms in my own country and its not like there's anything particularly different about the Japanese blossoms. I do like the transformation of the trees and seeing that whole process, i can't do that in japan because i can't stay that long.
Shogo, Takashi, you both seem like the kind of guys I could have a beer with on a summer day with some Country or Rockabilly on the radio.

I would like to know what would Takashi consider to be one of Japan's hidden gems that most tourists are not aware of. I would also like to know Shogo's opinion. Personally I've become fascinated with the vending machines. I've seen a very old udon noodle machine that dispenses hot udon in a bowl. Not instant dried noodles like ramen, but real fresh upon.
I'm kind of early for once and Takashi is here, yay!
We have trains and buses in bigger cities but you still might have to walk a long way. In smaller towns it's a pain in the butt to get around. I'll always take a regular taxi over Uber, much safer!
It is very different from western societies. I went there with my gf on vacation for two weeks. We mostly stayed in Tokyo but visited cities nearby by train. The first week was wonderful, so many cool things, so much beauty. Plus we love Japanese food. We were treated very well by everybody and mostly had positive interactions.
But something changed in the second week. We took the subway to the outskirts of Tokyo to visit a samurai sword museum. That was great. But coming back, we realized that the subway station had no English signs and the ticket machines were Japanese only so we had no idea how to buy tickets. So far everything seems reasonable. The problem started when we tried to ask people for help in using the ticket machines so we could buy tickets. People ignored us and walked around us as if they were water flowing around rocks we represented. Zero acknowledgement. We were very normally dressed tourists and were trying to communicate our need calmly and non threateningly, but to no avail. It was a shocking feeling, we felt like we were nothing to them. We were finally helped by two young girls who were buying tickets. We gave them the money, pointed to the station we wanted to go to and 30 seconds later we were all set. We thanked and bowed profusely like idiots we were so relieved.
We couldn't see Tokyo with the same eyes after that. We weren't traumatized or anything, but our naive love for the place was shattered. We'll probably visit again some day because it was mostly very fun.
