i dont know if you ever played the old forzas but Turn10 bragged about recording the exact sound of every car in the game (i think it was for Forza Motorsport 3 or 4). FH4 sounds like theres nothing to them and every car sounds the same. so effin disappointing being a car guy :(
The grass is actually pretty spot on, in real life the grass in UK has a lower texture quality than Australian grass, I don't think UK even have 4k grass at all yet, great attention to detail.

FH4 was honestly not great. I dont understand why so many people like it so much, FH1 and 2 were the best in my opinion. FH3 was great too but not my favorite. And FH4 I was really disappointed in. I hated the random seasons, the houses I thought u could customize, the forzathon live was boring especially trying to get points to unlock a car, the map was the worst in the franchise in my opinion. Idk I think for FH4 being the first or second forza horizon game people played it was really good but Ive been around since the OG and I think a lot of people that played way back in FH1 would agree that FH4 is just not great and I would agree the car sounds are not impressive anymore. The game is average Im not gonna say I hate it because I do like it in some ways but just felt like a bootleg version of FH3 to me.

Forgot environmental features, which look DRASTICALLY better in FH3. Environmental features in FH4, including plastic 2D graphics and flickering, constantly self-rendering trees honestly look like they're taken out straight from a 2005 game smh.
Don't every forget horizon three has had a bunch of patches and optimaztions done to it to make it look better on PC. I'd imagine a year from now it'll be no contest when 4 gets a similar amount of love.
I feel like we’ve reached a point where our current hardware does not allow game devs to drastically make a big upgrade to graphics and realisms. Or the devs are just lazy which wouldn’t surprise me.
You really couldn’t be more wrong in your first assumption, just look as some of the better RTX gameplay trailers. Graphics are a long way from being unimprovable.
Yeah but the big thing that were improved between those 2 games is gameplay and I rather have better gameplay than graphics especially when the graphics are already great, fh 4 run smoother on PC than fh3 with a map that can have 4 different states and have better off-road mechanics but sure they didn't made better water so they are just a bunch of wankers
I think every time you notice something worse in 4 than 3, like the grass textures, it was a conscious decision that was made by the developers to improve the game. Not only in its look but in how it plays. As you said, the game trying to render high-definition individual grass blades as you rip over them at 200 miles an hour is a horrible use of resources. The grass is just a blur for your eyes anyway. The road however, is something you will look at closely a million times as you start up or after crashing etc AND it doesnt move or sway so go ahead, HD the hell out of it! Minimal resources used for a big gain. All of those decisions are bang for buck decisions. The bottom line for me having played neither game before and just now ordering 4 is that the side by side isn't even close. To me Forza Horizon 4 is much more realistic and natural-looking. High definition cartoon is still just a high-definition cartoon.
Blah blah blah If Forza wanted to cut tiny corners to make other things better they should've have wasted months and months of developing on dances and clothes.

I own and play both, for me H4 really looks better graphically especially over time (much more realistic) . Cars especially AMG’s do sound better in H3!, for me personally driving and racing is slightly more fun in H3. Overall i like H3 better but visually H4 got it easily beat.
4:59 the water surface effect is called Screen-space reflection, a video setting for which was added in Horizon 4 (on PC). And it does look much better now.
I believe the shadows were dumbed down for a reason, given how there is a lot more foliage in FH4 than FH3, not to mention the fact that they had to make 4 versions of each type of foliage to represent the seasons properly. If they make the shadows generic, they can focus more on texture and model quality of the foliage for the best possible appearance, instead of making 2 or 3 high quality shadow maps to go along with it. Game would be massive if that was the case (although it is a rather large download already)
The shadows weren't "dumbed down". Almost all shadows in the game are actually dynamic, meaning they don't use lightmaps. It's more demanding at higher resolutions, but it's a lot more flexible. There are no static shadows being cast by any hero models (like cars) and architecture, meaning everything's rendered at runtime and global shadow resolution depends on whatever you set it. Smaller foliage usually doesn't have shadows to begin with (with the exception of trees and large bushes). Smaller foliage like tufts of grass and small bushes rely more on Ambient Occlusion in dynamic environments, and most foliage LODs don't use baked shadows at all, which is why trees can appear bleak in the distance. The amount of vertices from models like trees that have to be rendered are a non issue since foliage relies heavily on LODs, meaning it really doesn't matter unless you go to extremes (which depend on the kind of game or real time environment you're working on). Game design isn't really a case of "Oh, shadows need to be better, so we'll thin out the tree geometry", it doesn't work that way. If it did, things would've been much simpler! Oops, wall of text.
A few other special effects I noticed in FH4 vs FH3 is more subtle animations on the car parts. Antennae, mud flaps, wing mirrors, rear wings, and wipers all flutter a little bit in the wind when driving. The driver character also moves a little more naturally in FH4. The driver reacts to impacts from landings or collisions and their upper body even moves a tad at low speeds when driving over uneven terrain. Also during skill songs, the driver now dances a bit in the seat.
I say it depends on the lighting. When Horizon 3 is in day time, it looks much more realistic than Horizon 4. I also think that in Horizon 4, when lighting is dim, it looks a bit less realistic than Horizon 3.

3:13, I think the textures on the right are intentionally softer because it's supposed to be wet grass, it makes sense for the dry grass to be more visually distinct and sharper due to the sun
He didn’t know about it but yes it was the leaves. Although, the leaves shouldn’t have been like that as it was very much like a stuttering effect. In FH3, the leaf movements were much smoother giving it a much more realistic look
Horizon 4 just came out, horizon 3 has been out and turn 10 has had time to update the game fixing minor issues, while unfortunately they’re going to need time to update 4
Yeah I figured as much. Surprised they don't really allow for any deep customization though. I like how Project Cars lets you set a blizzard in Florida if you want. At least for private or blueprint matches.
some small notes: -the more muted Colors and less intense light bloom are becuase of tonemapping, which i think improved a lot in fh4. the Highlights no longer blow out, but of Course this means losing contrast. it gives this more filmic, realistic lighting so i like it a lot -the Vegetation and trees actually did improve a lot. lighting of leaves is much more natural and the lower lod Levels look and blend better, which makes them look better at a distance -Damage now has the paint beeing scratch off, so thats a small improvement
They also toned down the bloom starting with Forza 7. Anyway I wouldn't say Horizon 3 holds up well, given how poorly it runs especially compared to Horizon 4. Good graphics don't mean shit if the game isn't playable. Also, Horizon 4 might have lower res grass textures but it has a lot more grass foliage, not to mention the mud tessellation and whatnot.
More broken maybe. The crashes nearly tripled, the graphics settings don't save anymore for a lot of people and it nuked saves several times. What's most alarming is that the last two occurred when Forzathon was update, not from an actual content update that requires download. That's actually what's keeping me from buying Horizon 4. They have some major issues if they can fuck up your game this badly just by hitting the wrong switch.
your PC must not be very good, I can play it at 4k ultra settings and never dip below 60 fps. It seems to be optimized well for the visuals you receive with it. I suggest either turning down your settings or upgrading your PC.
Did it ever cross your mind that maybe you have a PC that's so good optimization ceases to be relevant? Just because you can brute force the game to run well doesn't mean it's well optimized. These fuckin' guys man.
In my case, after all the optimization patches, the FPS on FH 3 more than doubled, from an average of ~45 on the lowest settings or completely maxed out with 8xmsaa to 100-115 depending on the region (closer to 100 in the city). FH4 however already runs at around 68-70 (maxed out with just 4xmsaa tho) which I don't mind, because even if it's not apparent in this video, the shadows got a massive upgrade due to actually having projected shadows now, especially during the night (FH3 had no shadows during night time, just a veil of darkness).
Runs well on mine as well, most of the time it runs smooth as butter though I still suffer from the problems every now and then that I listed. 4790k, 16gb ram, GTX 1080. Edit: The game has been updated a few times since this post & I no longer suffer from any of the problems I stated, it is truly a smooth experience now.
Horizon 4 looks more so how you're eyes would perceive it, whereas Horizon 3 looks like its being seen through a camera lens with some filtering added to it.
I think 4 is using a newer versions of ambient occlusion for shadows and shading in indirect lighting areas. Thats why some areas "pop" more and seem less dim in 3.
Did you use the golf courses for the grass comparison? If so then of course they would be different because the course it made to have a smooth texture.
For me it boils down to the beauty of the location. And Australia wins because I love that landscape, reminds me of Oahu Hawaii island of Test Drive Unlimited 1 & 2, the inspiration for Forza horizon.
They nailed it on the sound in FH4, have heard the C7 in real life, sounds identical to it. Also the Arial Atom sounds correctly as well, have heard one of those as well

Being a console gamer by preference Forza horizon 4 looks amazing and was one of my first real dips into the dynamic lighting with headlights and vegetation or poles and posts, I tend to use photo mode a lot in my honest opinion it's one of the biggest and best changes to the game the effects add to the photos. My preference is 4 mainly for the setting the photo mode and really nice dynamic lighting but I have shown people pictures from 3 that where mistaken as real pictures, so both games are gorgeous.
Question for someone who has played both: I have not played either game, but i was wondering if it would be worth it to get the $60 fh4 or get the $30 fh3? Thx in advance
For the corvette comparison, the fh3 corvette had FE (Forza Edition) tires and a different style of rims than the fh4 version. This made the tires have writing on them and look more shiny. The dirt/mud effects are also stronger in fh4 due to the fact that it is based in Britain where the weather is more humid. Just wanted to point this out.
FH4 runs way better on my GTX 1080 than FH3. FH4 never drops below 80FPS on ultra for me while FH3 and FM7 would drop below 30 for a couple brief seconds atleast once a race which is way more important than graphics IMO.
Any visual improvements will be because of engine improvements rather than asset improvements as they will have just reused the same assets for all cars that were present in both games.

The Lancia Stratos is one of my favorite cars and in 3 the headlights are super cool because they are animated. But in 4 it's like they never turn off so you never get to see them pivot down or anything. Little touch but it makes me really sad. Maybe they only turn off in the summer? Or maybe in the UK you have to keep them on at all times?
I need to point out that after 2 years H3 has been released, there has been many updates to this game. Some has to do with better graphics. After the One X was released, they did the last update to enhance the graphics by adding 4k HDR, and boy! The game looks beautiful! And as for H4, I know that the game is still under development. They will improve H4.
things are different because of the tweaked shader model in FH4, along with more ambient occlusion and other graphical updates to look more natural/real

On the sound design, I think 4 sounds more realistic and closer to what you'd be hearing while inside the car (not exactly, but closer). 3 sounds crisper, louder and like you're behind the car. I suppose it depends on what your version of proper immersion is, then, as to which is "better." Is immersion being in the car, and hearing the sounds as though you were in the car, or is immersion following the car, and hearing the sounds as though you were behind it (as you play the game)?
Westin Johnson Sound design in Horizon 4 is extremely mixed. They’ve reused engine notes on several cars. The E39 M5 and E92 M3 have the exact same engine note, and the note isn’t realistic for any of the cars. The C63S W205 4.0 L sound is a tweaked version of the C63 W204 6.2 L which is just weird and annoying. A 4.0 liter V8 will never sound like a 6.2 liter V8. Never.
I've tried playing Horizon 4 and there's this feel that's missing from Horizon 3. Maybe it's the setting but personally I like Australia way more than the UK.
I did notice horizon 3s crash sounds have a lot more depth to them. like 4s is mostly a loud thud, but 3s have some tinkling glass and bodywork cracking
With the shadowing is probably to optimise the game to be smoother ... Which in any racing game I would expect... Sound compare tho I wouldn't expect them to improve the same car sound . It's all about saving money ... New cars would benefit though :) good job mate

I think every time you notice something worse in 4 than 3, like the grass textures, it was a conscious decision that was made by the developers to improve the game. Not only in its look but in how it plays. As you said, the game trying to render high-definition individual grass blades as you rip over them at 200 miles an hour is a horrible use of resources. The grass is just a blur for your eyes anyway. The road however, is something you will look at closely a million times as you start up or after crashing etc AND it doesnt move or sway so go ahead, HD the hell out of it! Minimal resources used for a big gain.
All of those decisions are bang for buck decisions.
The bottom line for me having played neither game before and just now ordering 4 is that the side by side isn't even close. To me Forza Horizon 4 is much more realistic and natural-looking. High definition cartoon is still just a high-definition cartoon.
Blah blah blah If Forza wanted to cut tiny corners to make other things better they should've have wasted months and months of developing on dances and clothes.

I own and play both, for me H4 really looks better graphically especially over time (much more realistic) . Cars especially AMG’s do sound better in H3!, for me personally driving and racing is slightly more fun in H3. Overall i like H3 better but visually H4 got it easily beat.

4:59 the water surface effect is called Screen-space reflection, a video setting for which was added in Horizon 4 (on PC). And it does look much better now.

I believe the shadows were dumbed down for a reason, given how there is a lot more foliage in FH4 than FH3, not to mention the fact that they had to make 4 versions of each type of foliage to represent the seasons properly. If they make the shadows generic, they can focus more on texture and model quality of the foliage for the best possible appearance, instead of making 2 or 3 high quality shadow maps to go along with it. Game would be massive if that was the case (although it is a rather large download already)
The shadows weren't "dumbed down". Almost all shadows in the game are actually dynamic, meaning they don't use lightmaps. It's more demanding at higher resolutions, but it's a lot more flexible. There are no static shadows being cast by any hero models (like cars) and architecture, meaning everything's rendered at runtime and global shadow resolution depends on whatever you set it. Smaller foliage usually doesn't have shadows to begin with (with the exception of trees and large bushes). Smaller foliage like tufts of grass and small bushes rely more on Ambient Occlusion in dynamic environments, and most foliage LODs don't use baked shadows at all, which is why trees can appear bleak in the distance.
The amount of vertices from models like trees that have to be rendered are a non issue since foliage relies heavily on LODs, meaning it really doesn't matter unless you go to extremes (which depend on the kind of game or real time environment you're working on). Game design isn't really a case of "Oh, shadows need to be better, so we'll thin out the tree geometry", it doesn't work that way. If it did, things would've been much simpler!

A few other special effects I noticed in FH4 vs FH3 is more subtle animations on the car parts. Antennae, mud flaps, wing mirrors, rear wings, and wipers all flutter a little bit in the wind when driving. The driver character also moves a little more naturally in FH4. The driver reacts to impacts from landings or collisions and their upper body even moves a tad at low speeds when driving over uneven terrain. Also during skill songs, the driver now dances a bit in the seat.

I say it depends on the lighting. When Horizon 3 is in day time, it looks much more realistic than Horizon 4. I also think that in Horizon 4, when lighting is dim, it looks a bit less realistic than Horizon 3.

3:13, I think the textures on the right are intentionally softer because it's supposed to be wet grass, it makes sense for the dry grass to be more visually distinct and sharper due to the sun

He didn’t know about it but yes it was the leaves. Although, the leaves shouldn’t have been like that as it was very much like a stuttering effect. In FH3, the leaf movements were much smoother giving it a much more realistic look

I think the reason you can’t get equal blizzard effects is purely contextual and we never get blizzards like you see in fh3 in the uk.
Yeah I figured as much. Surprised they don't really allow for any deep customization though. I like how Project Cars lets you set a blizzard in Florida if you want. At least for private or blueprint matches.
5:54 it seems to me that damage effects are now more visible
some small notes:
-the more muted Colors and less intense light bloom are becuase of tonemapping, which i think improved a lot in fh4. the Highlights no longer blow out, but of Course this means losing contrast. it gives this more filmic, realistic lighting so i like it a lot
-the Vegetation and trees actually did improve a lot. lighting of leaves is much more natural and the lower lod Levels look and blend better, which makes them look better at a distance
-Damage now has the paint beeing scratch off, so thats a small improvement

Anyway I wouldn't say Horizon 3 holds up well, given how poorly it runs especially compared to Horizon 4. Good graphics don't mean shit if the game isn't playable.
Also, Horizon 4 might have lower res grass textures but it has a lot more grass foliage, not to mention the mud tessellation and whatnot.
Is the performance still shit in horizon 3? Ive heard that it got a lot better after a few patches. But maybe not?
More broken maybe. The crashes nearly tripled, the graphics settings don't save anymore for a lot of people and it nuked saves several times. What's most alarming is that the last two occurred when Forzathon was update, not from an actual content update that requires download.
That's actually what's keeping me from buying Horizon 4. They have some major issues if they can fuck up your game this badly just by hitting the wrong switch.
your PC must not be very good, I can play it at 4k ultra settings and never dip below 60 fps. It seems to be optimized well for the visuals you receive with it. I suggest either turning down your settings or upgrading your PC.
Did it ever cross your mind that maybe you have a PC that's so good optimization ceases to be relevant? Just because you can brute force the game to run well doesn't mean it's well optimized.

In my case, after all the optimization patches, the FPS on FH 3 more than doubled, from an average of ~45 on the lowest settings or completely maxed out with 8xmsaa to 100-115 depending on the region (closer to 100 in the city). FH4 however already runs at around 68-70 (maxed out with just 4xmsaa tho) which I don't mind, because even if it's not apparent in this video, the shadows got a massive upgrade due to actually having projected shadows now, especially during the night (FH3 had no shadows during night time, just a veil of darkness).
FH4 is better because it's a good port..

Runs well on mine as well, most of the time it runs smooth as butter though I still suffer from the problems every now and then that I listed. 4790k, 16gb ram, GTX 1080.
Edit: The game has been updated a few times since this post & I no longer suffer from any of the problems I stated, it is truly a smooth experience now.
To me FH4 runs at stable 60 FPS, FH3 instead around 50-60 FPS.
theres no stuttering problems in fh4 unlike fh3 and is very consistent

I think 4 is using a newer versions of ambient occlusion for shadows and shading in indirect lighting areas. Thats why some areas "pop" more and seem less dim in 3.

Did you use the golf courses for the grass comparison? If so then of course they would be different because the course it made to have a smooth texture.
For me it boils down to the beauty of the location. And Australia wins because I love that landscape, reminds me of Oahu Hawaii island of Test Drive Unlimited 1 & 2, the inspiration for Forza horizon.
When I first went to the beach on Forza Horizon 4 I was in awe because of how realistic it looked (I am from the UK myself)
They nailed it on the sound in FH4, have heard the C7 in real life, sounds identical to it. Also the Arial Atom sounds correctly as well, have heard one of those as well

Being a console gamer by preference Forza horizon 4 looks amazing and was one of my first real dips into the dynamic lighting with headlights and vegetation or poles and posts, I tend to use photo mode a lot in my honest opinion it's one of the biggest and best changes to the game the effects add to the photos. My preference is 4 mainly for the setting the photo mode and really nice dynamic lighting but I have shown people pictures from 3 that where mistaken as real pictures, so both games are gorgeous.
Question for someone who has played both: I have not played either game, but i was wondering if it would be worth it to get the $60 fh4 or get the $30 fh3? Thx in advance
Main sound difference is that left and right sounds are more noticeable/pronounced. I like it.
For the corvette comparison, the fh3 corvette had FE (Forza Edition) tires and a different style of rims than the fh4 version. This made the tires have writing on them and look more shiny. The dirt/mud effects are also stronger in fh4 due to the fact that it is based in Britain where the weather is more humid. Just wanted to point this out.

FH4 runs way better on my GTX 1080 than FH3. FH4 never drops below 80FPS on ultra for me while FH3 and FM7 would drop below 30 for a couple brief seconds atleast once a race which is way more important than graphics IMO.

The Lancia Stratos is one of my favorite cars and in 3 the headlights are super cool because they are animated. But in 4 it's like they never turn off so you never get to see them pivot down or anything. Little touch but it makes me really sad. Maybe they only turn off in the summer? Or maybe in the UK you have to keep them on at all times?

I need to point out that after 2 years H3 has been released, there has been many updates to this game. Some has to do with better graphics. After the One X was released, they did the last update to enhance the graphics by adding 4k HDR, and boy! The game looks beautiful!
And as for H4, I know that the game is still under development. They will improve H4.

On the sound design, I think 4 sounds more realistic and closer to what you'd be hearing while inside the car (not exactly, but closer). 3 sounds crisper, louder and like you're behind the car. I suppose it depends on what your version of proper immersion is, then, as to which is "better." Is immersion being in the car, and hearing the sounds as though you were in the car, or is immersion following the car, and hearing the sounds as though you were behind it (as you play the game)?

Sound design in Horizon 4 is extremely mixed. They’ve reused engine notes on several cars. The E39 M5 and E92 M3 have the exact same engine note, and the note isn’t realistic for any of the cars. The C63S W205 4.0 L sound is a tweaked version of the C63 W204 6.2 L which is just weird and annoying. A 4.0 liter V8 will never sound like a 6.2 liter V8. Never.

I've tried playing Horizon 4 and there's this feel that's missing from Horizon 3. Maybe it's the setting but personally I like Australia way more than the UK.
I did notice horizon 3s crash sounds have a lot more depth to them. like 4s is mostly a loud thud, but 3s have some tinkling glass and bodywork cracking
With the shadowing is probably to optimise the game to be smoother ... Which in any racing game I would expect... Sound compare tho I wouldn't expect them to improve the same car sound . It's all about saving money ... New cars would benefit though :) good job mate
