    I found my male box turtle outside and he will not eat plants nor vegetables and turtle food I just got a tank for it so he has room

      Yeah you shouldn’t take animals from the wild unless you know they are non native in your area. If it’s not eating then that could be a sign of some underlying sickness, Improper setup, etc… sometimes turtles are just picky so make sure you try variety of foods. I’d recommend getting some live isopods and have him try that. Make sure you aren’t feeding him aquatic turtle pellets or anything like that. Make sure you do proper research on diet, housing, lighting, etc…

    Would something similar to this be suitable for an eastern box turtle? Someone I know has one with a cracked shell and he’s living in a bare storage tote so I want to try to take him in and want to give him the best setup possible, but most of my experience is with fish tanks lol

    I’m hoping you moved the heat lamp somewhere else cause box turtles aren’t good climbers especially on rocks.

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před 9 měsíci

      Yes this was a temporary habitat I created, testing out different ideas I had…. He went back into his main enclosure, which is the most recent box turtle build video, a few days later. I’m working on my latest box turtle build video now!

  • @hoosier_turtles_and_tortoises

    Interesting design. I’ve done similar setups but used a smaller tub inside of a big tote to hold the substrate, and the rest a more aquatic type area. It lets you get a little deeper water depth.
    That tortoise table is NOT large enough for an adult desert tortoise. A young/juvenile would work in that, but not an adult.
    I like the live plants. Please do an update in a couple months and let us know how it worked out.

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před rokem +2

      It was a juvenile desert tortoise that I ended up using the table for… I definitely need to do an update! I’ve been busy with college so haven’t had the chance to film much :/

    Do you have a filter for the water section just curious if I’d need it

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před 11 měsíci +2

      Yes I do have a filter and if you do something like this then I’d highly recommend it… otherwise you would have to drain the water constantly with a submersible pump and put fresh new water. With a filter, the water stays clean for the turtle. I’m actually currently working on showing this in a better setting with a better explanation! Video should be out soon!!

  • @mgvaper
    @mgvaper Před 3 měsíci

    Awesome video man but I have to ask were did you get the waterfall from I want to build something like this for my turtle

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Just look for an internal aquarium filter. A lot of them go fully submerged but this one in particular stays at the top… there a few like that. I’m pretty sure Zilla was the company of the filter I used but there are others that work just the same. You could also use a pump with some tube and silicone the tube in the downward position on a rock while building the waterfall up… that way you can cover up the tubing with rocks and it’ll look like a mini natural waterfall!!
      I’d put a rock in front of the outlet of the tube to break down the water pressure… that way it only drizzles out. You can use plants, moss, rocks… you can stuff pillow stuffing behind a rock for a little filtration if you want!! There’s a lot you can do with it, it’s all about trial and error to find what you like.

  • @sanaatheartistactivist7038

    Nicely done but the water is way too shallow for him

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před rokem +7

      Three toed box turtles don’t necessarily need deep water. Just enough to submerge but not to deep where it could possibly drown. Not that it would, as they are a semi aquatic species. The water area is pretty deep despite what the video may make it seem like. The little guy appreciates you worrying about him;)

    • @alexmanakul6817
      @alexmanakul6817 Před rokem +5

      Box turtles like shallow water over deep they’re land turtles not aquatic 👊👍

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před rokem +2

      @@alexmanakul6817they are aquatic as well. They belong to the scientific Family of Emydidae rather than Testudinidae, which is the scientific Family for tortoises. They actually spend 80-90% of their time in water in the wild. They are not very good at swimming because their lack of webbed feet but can be submerged underwater for 20-30 minutes in a single breath. They can’t live in an aquarium with only water or nothing like that of course but they do in fact love their water just as much as any other turtle!

    Is there an update on how this set up worked out?

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před rokem

      I actually had to redo it:( I needed a massive drainage layer and I really didn’t have one at all… I made a video on me redoing it and is a more recent video if you wanted to watch it! Basically without that drainage layer the soil just got stinky super fast and the water was always dark but clean because of the filter. I decided if I did this again then I’d have the drainage layer take up like half of the tub with the water level being where the drainage layer starts. Add soil on top of the drainage layer part with it leading up to the water area. That way the water never touches the soil… if the water level is getting low then all you need to do is water your plants and the water seeps down through the soil, into the drainage layer which is part of the water area… kind of hard to explain, easier to show so will be making a video on it very soon hopefully! I’m hoping this way the water column stays crystal clear so it’s safer for the turtle to drink…

    • @dallinsrogers
      @dallinsrogers  Před rokem +1

      Considering people usually put them in 20 gallon aquariums for the winter… it’s pretty dang big. The tote is 46in long by 22in for the width where he can walk around… gets a little wider the more it goes up. I wish I could dedicate a whole room to this dude and build him something massive for the winters but just don’t have the space unfortunately:/ I’ll do a video of the outdoor enclosure once I figure out how I want to revamp it!
