The best performance of Gene Wilder's career. He should have won an Oscar for this movie. "Hearts and kidneys are Tinkertoys!" One of the greatest lines of dialogue in movie history.
I really can't pick a favorite or best performance. This, blazing saddles, haunted honeymoon, another you, willy Wonka, see no evil hear no evil, and stir crazy are all freaking fantastic.
As a child, this movie made me LAUGH! This scene is VERY funny. The buildup to Gene's anger towards the end is classic. "HEARTS AND KIDNEYS ARE TINKER TOYS!!"
Gene Wilder could do the "slow burn" like few actors ever have. If you think about it, the first half of "Young Frankenstein" depends on it, right up to "My...name...is...FRANKENSTEIN!"
Funny movie and very funny scene, might be reaching a bit by stating this. At 0:43 he says "My grandfather was a very sick man," in such a distant way I can't help but feel empathy for this character in such a comedic moment, despite constantly being compared to his grandfather when he doesn't want to and trying to distance himself from his grandfather as much as he can I can't help but think he feels bad for his grandfather. Like he realized how great of a scientist he could had been had he been able to curb his mental illness and stopped being so fixated on bringing back dead people, only Gene Wilder could have pulled off such an amazing character moment like this. RIP Gene, you were a genius!
Of course no one can be him, one read of the original comment I knew the commenter was talking about his comedic/dramatic prowess, frankly I'm am pressed to find an actor of his caliber these days
It was decades before I found out that piece of business with the scalpel is an H. G. Wells reference. I was reading the Wells scene -- very serious -- when I remembered this bit, and started laughing...
Gene wilder: I’m a scientist 1:12 My grandfathers work was doo doo 1:22 I’m not interested in death 1:26 Class is dismissed 1:40 Are you speaking of the worm or the spaghetti 0:18
This movie was the work of two comedy geniuses at the peak of their powers, Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks. The latter's earlier films of the 70s are all the more watchable because most of them are populated by his usual repertory players and hardly any of Brooks' 80s / 90s output uses them. Some say Dracula Dead and Loving It (dreadful and unfunny) is a thousand times better but no. The answer is and always will be Young Frankenstein.
He may of being alittle antagonist towards Frokenstein, he does ask a good question. The idea of actually bringing back the dead could serious revolutionize the field of science for generations. Yes it had very disastrous results, but you cannot argue that it doesn’t work, and at the end of the movie it did work. If this were to become more popular than Death will no longer be an issue. Although on the other hand if this were to fall onto the wrong hands like we see in Bride of Frankenstein it would essentially create slaves and monster to be used for god knows what.
To be honest you could look at this as either a drama or a comedy and Gene Wilder‘s performance fucking pulled it off! The emotion behind it is 100% real
BRAVO!!!!! BRING OUT THE POPCORN!!!!!!! THIS PROFESSER IS FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT ENTERTAINMENT. HOW CAN ONE KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE WHILE GETTIN STABBED WITH A KNIFE. SOOOOOOOO DRAMATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
But the preservation of life would obligate a person to revive an organism...not just keep it alive. Contradicting those facts by denouncing the body's organs as "tinker toy" when they are so much more complex but replaceable parts, means you're only the sum of your own. Also, Gene's acting is something to admire here.
I've watched this movie four or five times over the years, but it wasn't until watching this clip that I noticed the large pad that Gene Wilder is wearing on his right leg which allowed him to stab his leg safely. He obviously wasn't using a rubber knife 😉
Sadly, Gene Wilder - like so many others among the greats to appear in the numerous Mel Brooks classics - is no longer with us. And so many other greats from this film, as well, are gone - Marti Goldman, Peter Wilder, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman ......... And Wilder himself was married to the incredible Gilda Radner, one of the original superstars from Saturday Night Live who was so outrageously funny when she wanted to be, who herself died way too early.
To me, nobody can play a better mad scientist like Gene Wilder.
He was destined to play this role!
He can play a wide range of eccentric characters.
He was one of my 🐐's
His hair can too
So sad to hear he passed, the world lost a great man that day.
The best performance of Gene Wilder's career. He should have won an Oscar for this movie. "Hearts and kidneys are Tinkertoys!" One of the greatest lines of dialogue in movie history.
Agreed, and what’s so funny is that he’s absolutely correct.
I really can't pick a favorite or best performance. This, blazing saddles, haunted honeymoon, another you, willy Wonka, see no evil hear no evil, and stir crazy are all freaking fantastic.
That was the best scene. “My grandfather’s work was DOO DOO!!” 1:22 😂
Class is..... dismissed. Lmao. I love Gene's acting in this scene
Lmao exactly
I wanna know if he legit stabbed himself, and if it was on accident or on purpose.
Prob had some kind of prosthetic patch on the leg or clay 😅 but his face is priceless. So real 😂
"My grandfather's work was doo-doo!!" I'm gasping right now😂... there is no laugh too cheap for Mel Brooks, thank GOD.
I looked this up just to hear him say that line (and I own the Blu-Ray, LOL)
RIP Danny Goldman. Never knew he was the voice of Brainy Smurf until now.
Inga and the Blindman are all that's left.
Must have altered the recordings to make him sound higher pitches and more annoying in the Smurfs.
wait the actor playing the student is same guy who voiced Brainy Smurf in the Smurfs?
@@dannythomas417 . The Blindman, of course ...... uncredited, but Gene Hackman!

soulman2000 the build up is simply perfection
For some reason I love how the doctor says “Are you speaking of the worm or the spaghetti?”
1:22 MY GRANDFATHER'S WORK WAS DOO-DOO!!!
Love that line. Such a classic film.
He sounds so professional/formal and then...... DOO-DOO so unexpectedly.
Broccoli
that’s what I came here for
So was 2020...
R.I.P. Gene Wilder. You will be missed :(
RIP also to Danny Goldman, who played the student in this scene.
I didn't know Danny died too. RIP to him as well.
@Andrew Dieseljuice But what about 2020, sir?
RIP Danny Goldman... (the actor who played the annoying student)
Funny movie and very funny scene, might be reaching a bit by stating this.

The first 7 seconds of this video are my favorite. The way Gene looks at the student as he begins to pronounce his name wrong. So freaking funny.
Mine too
Man this student is trying really hard to get on Frederick's nerves.
I see what you did there 😏
Why doesn't he say "Frodrick" ?
I think he succeeded. 😁
"'Fronk en steen'."
@@stevenclark6552 Because it isn’t. It’s Frederick Fronkensteen.
There will never be another Gene Wilder, he was such a great comedic actor
No one can be him. People must be themselves.
Of course no one can be him, one read of the original comment I knew the commenter was talking about his comedic/dramatic prowess, frankly I'm am pressed to find an actor of his caliber these days
Nobody could do hysterics and just pure crazy like Gene Wilder man! Just in a class all by himself. His work lives on as it should, RIP.
R.I.P., Danny Goldman! You were great as Brainy Smurf, and you were awesome in this video.
Aww was he Brainy Smurf? Just needs to be pitched up a bit and you've got a dead ringer 😆.
"As Papa Smurf ALWAYS says" ☝️🤓
@@kadejito1 Put some glasses on his face and he even looks like Brainy Smurf.
It was decades before I found out that piece of business with the scalpel is an H. G. Wells reference. I was reading the Wells scene -- very serious -- when I remembered this bit, and started laughing...
Truly is one of the funniest movies of all time. I can't watch it without laughing.
0:56 Just love his delivery.
1:22 “MY GRANDFATHER’S WORK WAS DOO DOO!”
I love when he just stabs himself with the scalpel. Comedy gold!
Greatest portrayal of a mad scientist ever in film.
Gene wilder: I’m a scientist 1:12

Hearts and kidneys are tinker toys. I am talking about the central nervous system. The best two lines in a movie ever!!
1:12 "I am a scientist, not a philosopher!! *You have more chance of reanimating this scalpel than you have of mending a broken nervous system!* "
Absolute Legend Gene Wilder...one of the best comedians of all time!
“I am a scientist not a philosopher!” 1:12

@BigTastyTyrone I just think his Dracula spoof is really bad and anyone who likes it would have to hate Young Frankenstein.
Dracula has a special place in my heart, but this film is better by orders of magnitude. So I suppose I’m someone who indeed enjoys both.
“Memor bis punitor deli-CA-tum!!” 😂😂😂
I felt this one! Although strictly speaking it should be delictum not “delicatum” lol
I kinda don't blame Frederick for trying to distance himself from his grandfather. Living in someone else's shadow can be annoying.
1:20 I've watched this exchange about 50 times in a row. Send help.
Danny Goldman. 1939 - 2020.
One of a kind. Brilliant.
He may of being alittle antagonist towards Frokenstein, he does ask a good question. The idea of actually bringing back the dead could serious revolutionize the field of science for generations.

1:32 I could watch this scene over and over and it’ll still be funny
R.I.P Danny Goldman
RIP Danny Goldman 1939-2020
RIP Danny Goldman & Gene Wilder, wonderful exchange you guys made here.
Gene Wilder was such a nutcase in this movie, which is what made it so enjoyable!
RIP Danny Goldman.
Gene, I miss you.
(Crying)Goodbye Danny.
MY GRANDFATHER’S WORK WAS DOODOO!!!!!
The way he sticks himself in the leg, then double checks to see if it's really in there, then deciding to play it off makes me laugh so hard 😂😂
My favorite scene.
1:22 Funniest quote.
I play this scene for my students when we learn about the nervous system
I love how he looks at the scalpel
❤😢 I will. Miss. Him😢
GM ben finegold
you with the crazy comment
very suspicious
Mainly etcetera.
When I first saw this when I was younger I honestly thought that student was the actor who played Pee Wee Herman lmaooo
I just found out the curious student is Brainy Smurf.
To be honest you could look at this as either a drama or a comedy and Gene Wilder‘s performance fucking pulled it off! The emotion behind it is 100% real
Very funny movie but also very moving in its own right.Saw this the first time at the Banff Springs Hotel whi t h in itself is a a magnificent castle.
The student reminds me of Jim Parsons-the student kind of acts a little like Sheldon Cooper would too!
He looks like a character out of Dobie Gillis.
RIP, Danny Goldman.....1939-2020.
'HEARTS AND KIDNEYS ARE TINKER TOYS!'
I've heard that the knife was supposed to have been a prop but wasn't... And that the prop guys were fired.
I love how he always RAGES
Gene Wilder... anyone else would probably have bungled these lines, making them too flat. His delivery... perfect.
Hearts and kidneys are tinkertoys! 1:05
i only realized now that it's a fake leg.
I think it is a pad of some kind.
There is something under his pant leg, but I remember hearing that the blade went right through it and cut his leg.
I used to show this clip to my students when we were studying the Scientific Method. And yes, I would then dismiss the class. :-)
Honestly this is the funniest part in the entire movie😂😂😂
Doo doo!!!
BRAVO!!!!! BRING OUT THE POPCORN!!!!!!! THIS PROFESSER IS FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHAT ENTERTAINMENT. HOW CAN ONE KEEP A STRAIGHT FACE WHILE GETTIN STABBED WITH A KNIFE. SOOOOOOOO DRAMATIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
0:43 My grandfather was a very sick man
No one could freak out like Gene Wilder.
My test score was doodoo!
It's funny that it didn't take much to turn Fronkensteen into a Frankenstein.
Gene had way too much fun with this role
No such thing as having too much fun in a comedy
That one guy reminds me of mike teavee (1971 ver. btw)
Victor Frankenstein and Frederick Frankenstein are the best Frankenstein’s Brothers. “That’s Frankenstein, My Name.”
1:22 when you tell people your grandpa shoveled manure for a living
So, how painful *is* accidentally stabbing your left thigh with a scalpel?
Not painful enough that you don’t hilariously try to hide the embarrassment casually. So so subtle, but SO damn funny
I’m sure it’s more painful when it comes out

Willy Wonka has a mustache
Oh God, I am laughing so hard, I am now CRYING. This MIGHT top Willy Wonka.
Class is....dismissed.
and I got here from the movie Dismissed...
Brooks' best film.
1:32 Ouch
MY GRAND FATHERS WORK WAS DOO DOO!!!
I think he should’ve said “bullshit” instead of “doo doo”.
He was born to play Brainy Smurf
Lol, Willy Wonka talking to Brainy Smurf
Peter Finch, from his.performance in Network, might've given Gene Wilder a run for his money, but Wilder was a genius at abruptly changing his manner.
That was Igor from MASH at 0:25.
Hearts and kidneys are doodoo I am interested in the preservation of life😂😂😂😂😂😂

Wow Ben Simon removed all the Donald trump references
Just in case Mike Kummer is watching.
