You were spot on with the Def issues and how so many big things to small don't require it, even though they burn through the fossil fuels.
You’ve ‘hooked’ us so bad that when you asked if the frozen wheels were turning, we yelled into our phones, “yep” loud enough for you to here 2,000 miles away. 😅
Mike, your DEF comments were the most enjoyable I’ve heard in a long long time. My outlook: if the government is going to require DEF, then they should make it work reliability.
Since I’m an engineer I can’t help but give a little input: The NOx emissions result from combustion at high temperatures and pressure. This condition promotes the nitrogen and oxygen in the cylinder to combine. Internal combustion engines, particularly diesel engines, produce these conditions since the air is trapped in the cylinder and greatly compressed before combustion. Locomotives and ships use diesel engines and thus create plenty of NOx. All the aircraft carriers in the USN are powered by nuclear reactors so no emissions other than heat. France’s aircraft carrier is also nuclear powered.
Jet engines (including gas turbines) are a different animal. Air is compressed by the compressor stages, then fuel is added to the combustion chambers and ignited. The gasses flow freely to the turbine(s) without increasing pressure. Air flows freely through the whole jet engine without being trapped. The combustion must be performed at the compressor discharge pressure, otherwise a compressor stall occurs with an ugly loud loss of all power. Jet engine combustion increases the temperature and thus the volume of the gas flowing through the engine. It is this increased volume that is harnessed in the turbine and the engine exit jet to develop power. Without the huge increase in pressure of a diesel engine, NOx production is much less. This also explains why diesel engines are more efficient.
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. I also noticed International mislabeled the tachometer in your truck, like most manufactures do. The legend should describe the numbers on the display, i.e. 5, 10, 15, 20 etc. These numbers are actually the rpm divided by 100. Example 1000 rpm divided by 100 gives the 10 on the gauge. Correct labeling would be:
RPM / 100
or
X 100 RPM
Powerplants are also required to run some kind of NOx controls.
Though we mainly use Anhydrous Ammonia in coal power for the job, but it does the same thing
For the Oil boilers, exhaust gas recirculation is able to do the job
and the natural gas fired turbines keep within their limits by the process you described above
@@9deviltiger9 my introduction to Selective Catalytic Reduction was in a nitric acid unit in a chemical plant which also used anhydrous ammonia. Since the farming profession is already using anhydrous ammonia for fertilizer, the supply chain already exists to use ammonia bottles for SCR in cold environments. Adopting NH3 would require some work by the regulatory agencies, and they keep telling us how important clean air is, so it should be doable.
EGR, exhaust gas recirculation, seems to work well in gasoline engines and the processes you mention above. In my opinion it is totally unsuitable for diesel engines. European legislation did this better, allowing a no EGR solution by increasing the amount of SCR.
It’s a pity that Farmers, truckers, construction, etc has to pay the price for this regulation causing unreliable engines.
none of that means any sense to this video? What on earth are you bullshitting about
@@concernedcitizen3163 Mike suggested the use of DEF in a variety of vehicles, including airplanes, that politicians and the public care about. His whole statement and suggestion was thoroughly enjoyable and I’m glad he took this approach. When one digs into the details, however, diesel engines operate much differently than a turbine engine, affecting the production of NOx. Clarifying this in the comment section could be of some value to readers unfamiliar with internal combustion engines.
@@markam306 I dont see NH3 being viable on-road as an accident could cause a very very dangerous situation. As for using it with agriculture equipment it might be interesting to use with tractors for seeding or plowing equipment as you could direct the exhaust to be used in the soil for additional fertilizer content but how this would play out with current gov'ts trying to reduce nitrogen/fertilizer use... maybe it wouldnt be a good thing. I've often wondered about something simple as passive propane or methanol injection into the intake.
Arctic trucking experience: do not apply any parking brake unless danger of rolling, then apply light trailer brake and block 2 wheels. Release trailer brake, shut down engine or set fast idle. Do not apply any parking brakes. Brakes will cool and apply if or when air bleeds to 60#. Applying parking brake when shoes are warm or snow filled is guaranteed to cause problems. Winter doesn't care if you are north of the 49th or the 60th. Be careful what you teach Chapel, he is easily influenced.
When I started driving, I had a seasoned pro told to drag the brakes a little bit before parking for the night , especially if it's wet, to dry up the moisture in the brakes so they don't freeze overnight.
Thank God for webasto. Keeps the world rolling. Also, can't believe the video ended the first time you said it..
Our company in North Dakota has used the tire savers for years. Love your channel Mike, especially the Patreon membership.
Thanks Darryl! 😊
Hi Mike, the railroads are all different when it comes to DEF. GE and GM locomotive designs which are now owned by Wabtec and CAT respectively have developed diesel engines that meet the tier 4 emissions standards without DEF. The new passenger locomotives that VIA is using have Cummins engines that use DEF. I personally agree with you, the delete is the best thing you could do, heck emergency generators are tier 0 diesel engines, no emissions controls. Just tested a Cummins 15 litre that consumed about 120 litres a hour while under 100 percent load.
The US military doesn't use def either. Very good point Mike.
HAHAHA You Cracked me up on the DEF Comments !!! I have a Fleet of Trucks and Ive been switching over from Emission DEF engines to Gliders !!! Love your Channel !!!!
Haha Justin you flow Mike that’s nice
Hands down the best argument I have heard about worthless DEF in yrs.And it's a great point. The rules are made by people who don't have to depend on their lively hood being shut down for a def code!!!
That IH truck looks good! F. Y. I. The location of the webbasto above the DPF is questionable. These webastos fail from over heating or if it’s location is to hot it won’t fire. That would only happen if you have been running the truck and after shutting it down it failed to fire because of the heat from the DPF. I LOVE YOUR CHANNEL!
Haha that face after saying ; i always doing a pre trip
😆
Hi Mike, as a B737-Max airline captain and a (hobby) farmer on the side, we could have some nice discussions together... Maybe you could have a holiday to Europe one day 😉
The Webasco seems very similar to the truck cabs night heater, although back in the 70's you'd have to rely on a huge 6 cylinder diesel to keep you warm (+alive), but you never had to worry about starting the engine the next morning, lols.
Funny though, first you try and then with some help from tubesco after you drain the battery.😉
Oh man Mike the shots you could get with the s22 ultra 10x lens, I have one and love it!
Good luck hauling your grain Mike

aircraft carriers (short: CV):
- US CVs are all nuclear powered (aka, they have nuclear reactors on board)
- RN CVs are powered by a mixture of gas and diesel (they won't tell you if they use it or not)
- the Charles de Gaulle (France) is nuclear powered
- the Admiral Kuznetsov (Russia) uses a mix of steam turbines and diesel (she was laid down in 1982, so quite unlikely that she uses DEF)
- the Liaoning (China but built by the Sowjet Union/Ukraine) uses a mix of steam turbines and diesel (she was laid down in 1985, so quite unlikely that she uses DEF)
- the other Chinese CVs use steam turbines
- little is known about upcoming Chinese CVs, but they want to transition to nuclear powered ones
- the Japanese helicopter carriers/aircraft carriers use gas turbines
battleships: the last battleship was built was the HMS Vanguard and she was laid down in 1941 (and completed in 1944)
13:23 planes don't even use Diesel
They make skid sticks you put on wheel nut and you can see un mirror. Some paint white line on sidewall of tire.or you can put handfull of snow on top of tire.if wheel turns snow gone
I have been getting away with running older pre def equipment so far. That just sounds like a real pain
Love that westfield auger, dinky little thing
Miss having multiple vids a week from ya Mike.
When you wash your truck 🚛 and before you park drive with your brakes pedal pressing down for about a mile what that does is drys the water out and they won't freeze 🥶 it works
First thing I've always done is backed up first in the winter time... I've pulled B trains out of Northern Ontario for years backing up most of the time break them free
They have this new invention out now I think they call them gloves not sure might wanna check on that lol
I've seen those reflective tabs on many fleet vehicles and just assumed they were related to tattling if a lug had varied from it's proper torque setting. Good to learn the real reason for them.
I'm glad that got cleared up today. I've always thought the same thing as you.
@@wideslammer Yeah, unless Mike was just funnin' with us?
Always good to know a second usage of something though.
Mike I used to have Samsung phones… but due to problems I was having I switched to Apple phones, best thing I did. Mike you could get a IPhone 14 with 1TB of internal storage and it will hold 500 hours of 1080p video or 52 hours of 4K ultra high definition video. Also they have lots of cool features just for guys like you with CZcams channel to improve video quality. You should at least check them out I did, best phones yet!!
Mike, use a screen protector. Next time they work very well.
As a Farmer you know better then to start cold with the wrong Oil , it can do a lot of damage.
I always had 0-40 synthetic Oil in the winter.
Not sure about the Def laws in Canada, here in the Us it’s a federal offense to remove emissions with heavy fines and even jail time
I should have 0-40 in by now. But too many higher priority things to do.
there are no screen protectors for the camera lenses unless you custom make one.
You can get remote controls or app-control for the Webasto heater.
Really? I better look into that! Thanks 🙂
A lot of ships use DEF 40 a little higher strength than the DEF 32 used in land based engines
Great video Mike
My opinion: The scratch on the lens isn't enough of an issue to bother switching phone/camera. Save your money.
What a brilliant observation about def, I hate the stuff over here in the uk , now charging us a £1 per litre for the crap
Magnifique vidéo et le 🚛 et les remorque sont grands
5:58, well, were in the same boat. i Hvae the 20FE and im running low on storage just with apps and a lil bit of vid and images, ill probly be going for the 500GB s22 now in december, cuz i record less on my phone then what i used to. mostly Rec IRL stuff on my GoPro now
DEF (Adblue) doesn't handle the Australian winter very well sometimes either. It is supposed to freeze at -6°C and many mornings where I live in northern New South Wales are colder than that in winter and that causes problems. It must be a nightmare for you guys where your maximum temps for the day are 30 or 40 degrees colder than our minimums.
There’s the Samsung repair store on the south end of stoon, they replaced my screen in one day. And Bolt mobile by Home Depot in stoon always has the newest greatest phones before anyone else.
hey mike u should get the iPhone 14 u can get 1tb of storage on them and there out now
Sometimes is best to go in reverse before going forward it'll break the brakes loose better for some reason
When you were saying that planes or anything that fly in the air they don't use diesel they use aviation fuel which is a different product from that the extract from the oil sands or the oil rigs and refineries
You should get the ebersprächer so you can start it with a app on the Phone and when you get to your truck it alredy warm and ready to go.
Yes you for sure need the yellow reflectors on your tires.
Every emergency vehicles in my area are deleted and tuned like fire trucks ambulances ect that’s just in my area im here in MI so it get chilly
Definitely need Def on the government planes and busses.... see how quick that would change.
Lmao def on planes? I hate def but you gotta be smarter than that
Wouldn't be advertising about removing the def system, in Ontario it's part of your annual safety requirement now
Howdy Mike
You cannot use DEF in aircraft, it freezes and temperatures drop quickly to below zero as you gain altitude. There have actually been case's where fuel suppliers have delivered fuel contaminated with DEF to airports and it has caused aircraft to make emergency landings as it froze up in the fuel system and shut down engines. It only takes a tiny amount in fuel to block things like fuel nozzle's.
That's exactly my point 👌 Imagine them making it mandatory, I can guarantee you we would have very, very, very reliable def systems
@@mikemitchell2554 ... yeah Def is ok for some applications and was ok as an interim solution but should have never been adopted as a mainstream or permanent one. But hey big money industries have way more influence and say in what happens than they ever should. Lobbying by them should be made illegal punished with jail time and company breaking fines around the world imo :)
Def is for NOx reduction, that doesn't make sense on gas or kerosene engines.
Fun fact, since MAN are basically the only ones making big enough engines for cruise ships and their company is based in Germany, all HFO running ship engines from MAN actually come with an EGR and Def system since 2012.
Ive never had a DEF issue on my grader full throttle solves lots of problems
WE DO NOT HAVE THAT DEF PROBLEM IN NORWAY 😊AND OUR WINTER IS COLDER
That's awesome that you don't have issues with it, but a quick google search of the coldest countries in the world puts Norway at #5 or #9 depending on which article you read. Where Canada is #1 -#2 in those same articles.
Now to be honest it doesn't matter, the fact is Canada is cold 6-8 mo of the year depending where you are and it should be illegal to require def in country that it's proven to be a danger to the public.
Thanks for the feedback tho 🙂
@@mikemitchell2554 when getting over -30 does it really matter OuR cOuNtRy Is CoLdEr, same thinh here in Finland never heard of people bitching this much, are you sure that there isn't also some other factors that cause these issues? We warmup our older equipment that could likely start in cold weather because cold starting at cold yemperatures is really bad for engines. Also not aure about Ca, but i know that in Eu we have tighter stantards than Us and are able to work better in same really cold temperatures.
Hmm looking around I'm not seeing the 1Tb version available anywhere here(US) also! I did see a 1Tb version of the fold 4 available. I have the fold 4 now and for video, it's super handy to be able to partially fold it and it acts as an impromptu kickstand... The other option for you to possibly pick up a phone with less storage and then use Google photos to sync all your videos to the cloud and keep your phone clean? Not sure if that'd be a workable option? Ha or maybe Amazon or eBay has your current phone cheap? Need a backup phone in your truck anyways! 😂
Found the same too, must be a shortage of the 1TB chips, was looking at alternate android but even the pixel 7 pro only has a max of 512. Hate to say it but Apple has the 14 pro max at 1tb, or Samsung I think a53 has a memory slot, but that’s a mid range phone,
@@vxnova1 hmm another option may just be a Usb-c microsd card adapter. Would be able to keep using his existing memory cards... Though in order speed up editing, going with a fast little external ssd like the Kingston xs2000 might be an idea! Super fast and quite small. It's been out a couple years, so there may be even smaller ones now too...
100% of emergency vehicle's in Las Vegas Nevada is diesel. Fire trucks, Ambulances and the reason I know that is because my uncle is in charge of specking out the builds on all of them and ordering for all the stations. And jets don't use diesel so no Def they use jet A fuel. In the USA are war ships are nuclear powered.
mike are aircraft carriers are nuclear def and nuclear power there might be somthing there
The reason the large diesels don't need def is that the engines are so large they can achieve the emissions requirements without it.
🤔 As I sit watching 1 of 4 locomotives belching black smoke, I find that hard to believe. But that's definitely what they would want ppl to think tho 😆🙂
Now it’s time to get GoPro like Welker’s have. You can mount the camera on a handle like Nick’s and it has a magnet and it’s easier for you. You can also get hat bill clips for GoPro or a harness don’t be so stubborn Brother it’s better for what you do you can stop holding your phone out and get 2 hands while making videos like Nick ❤️😏🖖🏼🇺🇸

You can get the s 22ultra 1 terabyte up here in Canada
I think that none of the military trucks and tanks run def too. You would hate to throw a def code in the middle of the battle field
Right?! Imagine sending tank to Ukraine and during the winter it throws a def code and ur stranded? 😆💀
They don't last time I drove and fueled some up.
Once a technology becomes deemed mission critical then it tends to be designed to almost never fail. Commercially it's the opposite. They want a good turn over of revenue from every customer through parts, supplies, repairs and upgrades. The next American MBT has been mandated to be either hybrid or fully electric because fossil fuel supply is projected to be detrimental to future force readiness. Yes, the M1 Abrams hybrid-electric is coming.
@George 🤔 what does the failings of FTX have to do with the unreliability of def?
@George Surprise!!! I actually agree with you about it never running out. Running OUT is not the issue. Not having control over the costs and production earmarks in a free market system of the end products of fossil IS an issue for force readiness. And, there's the whole "carbon" atmosphere thing.
I actually did a second year university proposal that essentially asserted that the last amounts of oil on earth would never be extracted for use simply because the relative costs of using oil would be so punishing we'd have to switch away from it long before then. I didn't think I'd live to see the very early onset stages of that prediction come about though.
I also did not expect The Pentagon to spearhead any part of this transition either but they are.
FWIW, I would also decline to purchase *any* real estate in The U.S. these days at any price.
For the most part about emissions you are right but not completely. The locomotives have gone through a few tiers of emissions but the railroads are cheap and don't replace locomotives often. A farming comparison would be you still using tr96 combines and the first steiger tractors with independent PTO or big buds and all have over 50,000 hrs. Also in the shipping industry they run a more expensive cleaner fuel in certain regions it is required and some container ships are dodgging that entirely by running LNG powerplants.
plenty of farmers running TR96's and old Steigers still. 12K hours on one of our 9390's.
@@NVMDSTEvil very true but none are the size of Mike's farm and running them a lot that they are in 30000+ hrs
Have you ever considered to try a MTX 3630T tractor. Is pushing 800hps so very powerful and is a 4 track's.

Also... 16:05 👋😄
Skiddd indicators
-22°C 🥶or like we say in Nortwest Germany: The End of the World as we know it…😂
I’d say you would have to buy it from Samsungs online site to get the 22 ultra with 1tb storage same way with the iPhone 14 pro max I want I have to order online to get the new 1 tb model they have
Mike, aircraft carriers and battleships are nuclear, so they don't use any type of fossil fuel.
I think maybe someone should look into emissions long term, how long do the latest emissions machines last? 10 years compared to a big bud that last 40 years, how much emissions go into making said machine, digging up iron ore to fabrication let alone all the precious metals like platinum in the exhaust how many emissions come from refining that.
@Mike Mitchell Ur phone problem there is one used one s22 ultra on eday it looks pretty clean but you can always by a IPhone
While I fully agree with you on DEF, US Navy aircraft carriers are nuclear... lol😀
Did you notice the unidentified individual (maybe Frankles) waving to camera in the background at 16.08 and Mike didn’t even notice 😹😹
US aircraft carriers are nuclear powered. So enriched uranium fuel rods don't need DEF.
Mike I think you should stop filming in 4k just use the 1080p it's sufficient (specially for iPhone users 😉) it will save your storage and battery
The 1tb ultra probably won't ever be in the US market. I have the 22ultra and run a c type usb memory stick to transfer stuff off to. Keep it on my keychain
Do you really swap out your oil for winter? Even here in Norway we do 15w/40 all year round
Something has to be figured out with DEF in cold environments, but transportation and agriculture should be using it on everything because they are #2 and #3 on the list of the worlds biggest polluters by industry behind energy.
They are useless
Mike made a Oops when it comes to plugging in the truck 🤣🤣🤣. Those diesel engines are wonderful to have when pulling big heavy loads. However not so awesome when they set in the cold and won't start. And I don't care what you say about the brand of diesel engines. Rather it's a Cummins or Detroit diesel a MAN or a Mercedes all diesel engines are a pain in the butt to start up in the cold rather they're plugged in or not. At least Mike had the common sense to install one of those mini heaters to heat up the fuel lines and get the Diesel fuel ungelled.
The webasto heater heats the coolant and is diesel fired
Good truck?
BestBuy in Louisville Ky has 5 In Stock!!!! $1599.99 each!!!
1tb?
I don’t think a nuclear powered aircraft carrier will require that...😂
Mike you don't want them on your trucks over time the wear a groove in your rims and will have to change all the rims that are bad. I had to have 4 rims changed on the road so I could leave the inspection station
Oh, I didn't know that
I thought for sure you were going to discover that the reason it wouldn’t start was because the fuel gauge was laying on E. Hope you took care of that before you hit the highway. Or maybe it doesn’t work?
Hey Mike most LARGE military ships are Nuke style now…
That's true, especially the new big ones.. But up here in Canada we don't have anything that new or big.. She's all old school 😂
yea mike no sd card i have the samsung galaxy 22 ultra
S22 ultra is almost phased out. Wait a month or two for the s23 ultra and they'll be all over the place with 1tb.
My dad used to spray either/starting fluid the Diesel engine on cold days. Do they still do that?
Railroads are starting to upgrade, but only happens when a new locomotive is purchased. rebuilds can stay at a lower tier level. Private jets are one of the most prolific emitters of pollutants, but as long as our politicians are captive to big money I don't think anything will change, at least in North America. There is some attempt being made in Europe to regulate private jets but money will probably keep it from happening over here for a long time.
Weird that you can not get the S22 Ultra and them saying that the 1TB isn't even released because I have had mine since February lol
Mike airlines use kerosene not diesel.😉
☺
hi Mike, ships are already fixed, they are using cleaner fuel since 2020 which is abt twice more expensive
From the looks of the exhaust on cruise ships I have seen, the fuel is not very clean and/or regulated to the injectors very well. I thought they burned the lowest grade they could force through the injectors.
They can’t put def on any of that stuff mike because it’s not reliable and all that stuff needs to be reliable
@Mike is it a canadian custom to not speak the "W" in "Webasto"?
More an ear thing I think. As a Saskatchwanian I hear a W when Mike says webasto in his Saskatchewan English.
@@wssides Ok :)... so W is generally very silent in Saskatchwanian, so "Walter" sounds more like "Alter", in Germany this means Old one but is also used like Dude in Englisch ;)
Most of the naval ships are all nuclear
Especially the USA, they're have top notch and new equipment but us up here in Canada are not haha
You know airplane/ship engines are not diesel engines and therefore technically can't even run DEF (at least the airplanes not). But still, they are some of the biggest air polluters out there. I'll give you that one.
I was thinking that when Mike said but kerosene / jet fuel is closer to diesel than anything else just slower burning. Whilst ships are heavy oil all the aux engines on generator plants etc are diesel. He has a valid point if it can’t be made to work at low temperatures then it shouldn’t be required
ship engines are diesel. they power generators that power the electric motors to propell the ship. most don't require def because they are over horsepower range required for def
ship engines, and generators can both run on diesel, but generally both can be switched to heavy fuel oil once its heated and cleaned. heavy fuel oil is actually dirtier, but most ships will have a SCR reactor that uses ammonia to help clean the exhaust gas, its also required by law in numerous European ports now before entering their waters.
Mike… hello Mike… are you there I can’t see you… yo-yo yo we need a GoPro….
Real Northern Truckers rattle can orange spray paint on the tires lol
