  • The Ontario Northern railway is an interesting kind of railroad today as they operate both freight and passenger servers while being government owned almost like the Alaska railroad. But in the 70s the railroad acquired a train that wasn't exactly suited to operating in the canadian north, a luxury European first class train. The Trans Europe Express operating in northern Canada didn't exactly work out but the service is fondly remembered by those who were fortunate enough to experience it.

Interestingly some of the commuter cars were used in montreal up until 2011, we had a affectionate name for the rtc 85, the "go-karts"

While I never rode the service, I did see it once. Was very unique.

From what I have heard, the Northlander will be back with a Simmens Charger/Venture service.
