    This isn’t a life lesson, but my grandma died unexpectedly in March. She was a French teacher, and right before she died I was planning on visiting her and showing her the Bluey episode Pavlova. Before her funeral, I went to her coffin and played the episode. I think she enjoyed it considering I got into my first choice grad school later that day. I don’t really have anyone to share that story with, but I will share it here.

      I wish I'd told my wife what I'd now like to tell every mother that's doing the best they can - you're doing great.
      We had our firstborn during the lockdown, and that meant no at home care postpartum, no professional guidance, delays on every appointment. It triggered a particular anxiety for us and my wife essentially secluded herself and our son. She's depressed about it now, everything she could have missed out on, could have done better, etc.
      But she did the best she could, and our boy is growing happy and loving. For how much she had to struggle alone while I worked, she did an amazing job.
      I've never seen her comment on a CZcams video, doubt she'll ever see this, but to her - and to all you wonderful Chillis:
      You are doing great

    My sister encouraged me to watch Baby Race after I was concerned how I was raising my kids because I was comparing myself to other moms around me. And after watching Baby Race, I was emotionally reassured that parenting is not a one size fits all approach. I most definitely learned to run my own race❤

    Bluey showed me i grew up in an emotionally abusive household; and when I finally confronted my narcissistic mom on the matter, I get gaslighted.

    • @reuvenknight1575
      @reuvenknight1575 Před 10 měsíci

      If you are comparing your life to Bluey to tell whether they were emotionally abusive, that's a bit unfair. Bluey is an ideal for people to strive for, but many parents won't hit that bar. Not only that, it is only showing parts of their life not every day. Plus they kinda started a family at over 40 which does usually bring more maturity to the parenting. They still screw up quite a bit but it isn't noticed as much by people who only want to see the good stuff. They also seem aware their kids might not be normal, but are trying to keep that in mind and work with it. Many past parents either didn't know or tried to ignore issues their kids had as the stigma was pretty large.
      They are MODERN parents as well. Remember in Fairytale when Bandit said "It was the 80's, Mums were allowed to be mean." He isn't kidding. Parenting and relationships have come a long way in giving more fair and aware treatment. So any parent we are looking at would have had different standards put on them and different expectations. Even modern moms get a constant stream of contradictory expectations, which is still better than many of our parents got, which was straight "Control the children! Smack 'em if you have to! Shut them up and make them behave!" So there are a lot of reasons why your parents would have been pretty crap compared to Bluey's. To be fair, most people would have had an invalidating childhood compared to Bluey if you were born before 2010 even if their's wasn't as rough as a 1980's and before childhood. Bluey isn't meant to be about comparing your childhood to it to see if it is lacking, it is about being better parents in the now and teaching kids important lessons.
      It would be wiser to talk to a therapist about those issues, not just comparing your life to Bluey. And if you think your mother is a narcissist, don't bother bringing it up to her. What good would it do? A narcissist isn't going to just snap out of it, and I promise you that even if she admitted to being a bad mum, it wouldn't make it that much better. I know, I had that happen with my Dad. He admitted it, but he didn't become a better father. He was still the same guy, just now I had the thing of dealing with it because he had admitted it and there was nothing he could do past that. He couldn't fix my childhood, and he didn't really care to change himself. So...Yeah...Very not helpful.
      If you do address her again though, do remember, a lot of this stuff would have been newer when she was a parent, if not non-existent, and a person can't truly be held to a standard that requires knowledge they didn't have. She also would have a totally different perspective and probably wasn't even noticing what was going on with you or how you felt, and even significant stuff might have seemed so trivial to her that she forgot it or didn't give enough of a thought to remember it well or right. What is huge to the child can seem like nothing to the adult, even though it might effect the child forever and become a major issue in their psyche. Depending on the adult she may not have been totally sober either (something kids don't frequently pick up on) and then you are dreaming that you are going to get any accuracy of recall, much less honesty if addiction or shame are involved. Most of the time recognizing that they can't do anything to make what they did better, going to therapy, and trying to navigate your future with honesty is all you really can do. Just because she says it was one way doesn't mean you have to agree.
