One of THE most under-rated musicians on the planet alive today. Stellar in song writing, arranging and performing. A absolute monster guitarist that deserves far more attention than he's gotten in the past. I'm gonna buy the book!
I've spoken privately to the author, so no need to repeat those words. But I want to say to my fellow Genesis/Hackett admirers that this autobiography is well worth obtaining. It is rather brief compared to other Genesis-related autobiographies, but as the Bard said, brevity is the soul of wit. It is full of childhood memories that suffuse our adult years. Maturity is the battle of overcoming the pains and scars of childhood. Steve Hackett's story is precisely that -- a testament to maturity and wisdom that has allowed him to continue making impressive music and to bring it to his fans, COVID-19 notwithstanding. From the secret behind its book title, all the way to the moral of the story (not letting anything come between you and your dream) it is everything that a musician's autobiography should be. I laughed and shuddered along with Steve and I hope everyone else who gets this book will enjoy it the same way!
Bought your book as soon as it came out and read it in a couple of days. Had tickets for the March 2020 gig in Basingstoke which was postponed until September 2021by which time I’d come down with a serious foot injury which was confining me to a wheelchair. Fortunately, the theatre was able to transfer my ticket to a disabled section and was able to catch your ‘Seconds Out’ concert, which was magnificent. Two days later, I went into hospital to have an operation on my foot and remained in for four weeks. When I came home, I decided to re-read your book which I did with great admiration and pleasure at your determination leading to, and beyond Genesis. I love your music and am trawling CZcams to acquaint myself with some of your early solo stuff. Please don’t lose your passion and determination to keep producing masterpieces like Entangled, Icarus Ascending, and Hoping That Love Will Last. Regards. Vic Hartley Hampshire
I just got my copy today and read it in a day. I enjoyed it very much. Wonderful anecdotes & memories! It will have a place of honor on my bookshelf next to Jo's Norfolk Rebels, which I also loved. Thank you so much for all your wonderful music too! Warm regards to you & Jo from Boston!
Just reading this now! Bought it at Aylesbury on 13 September 2022 at the merch stand together with Seconds Out revisited and some other bits and bobs. Then saw the auspiciously timed show at Leicester last week, 7 October. It was a love fest!😊😊😊
Great book, I'm reading it right now and feel totally immersed in the musician's life story . His writing style is very similar to mine and I can "like, totally relate, man". Fascinating book! Great sense of humor, some funny stories in there, too. One of best rock biographies I’ve read. I’m a fan since ‘77
Thank you so much Steve for your Genesis faithfulness over the decades...! ✌🏻 I’ve been an early fan since I was 14 and I am delighted to hear and watch your « Genesis revisited » concerts. You are making it even better than the original...! 😌 The only regret I have is that Peter is not part of the adventure as a singer... Thanks so much again for your implication as a Genesis « Phenix » and I wish you all the best for the future. With my deep respect and admiration. Christophe 🙋🏻♂️ A French fan
Great work, a wonderful and entertaining little book that offers some new perspectives about a great musician and gives a glimpse of the life of an era of rock music long gone by. Now its back to the music with fresh ears!
I had no idea this existed -- I'm buying a copy! Steve, I don't know if you read the comments on these, but at the risk of sounding cheesy, I wanted to thank you for everything you and Genesis have done. You and the others are truly an inspiration to multiple generations of musicians and just music lovers in general. Truly the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, and indeed from any time period. I also want to thank you for keeping the old music alive in concert to this day! Something Genesis proper only offers in medley form these days, thrown in between junk like Hold On My Heart and I Can't Dance. As much as I love Genesis, some of their late material is truly mind-boggling. Like, how do you go from recording Can-Utility and the Coastliners to recording Invisible Touch? On the flip side, if they hadn't put out Invisible Touch and grown their popularity like they did, I probably never would have discovered the old Genesis catalog which basically changed my life. So it is what it is, I suppose!
It's a nice but rather short read, with some poignant stories, some lovely assessments of his ex-colleagues and, for those who know a decent a mount about him, one big hole. I won't spoil things by going into that, but one thing for me is certain; Steve is about as happy and content as he's ever been and is grateful that he can still add new influences to his music after all these years. He really does come across as a warm-hearted soul.
I got my copy yesterday here in the US and was thrilled, finished it in one day. I hope Steve's feelings towards his former bandmates are heartfelt and honest. If it is true that Rutherford wanted Steve's solo career minimized in the Together And Apart film, that is a dick move. In the epilogue he mentions keeping in touch with everyone except Mike. How about that?
Got my copy in the mail two days ago. Flipped around reading various bits, cracked up immediately at the Fripp cheese story. Very entertaining stuff! Thank you for a fun read!
Nice one steve going to get this book looks interesting been a fan from early 70.s seeing you through all the years keep up the shows great live and still great playing and creative 👍
My 2 signed copies (for my brother and I) were shipped last 17 July. It's a long way, but hopefully I'll have the book soon. Can't wait!. Any new Blu Ray or something on the pipeline?. Now that everyone is remastering video material in HD, would be great to have your classic DVDs newly transfered in HD for Blu Ray, like 'Once Above a Time', 'Live Fire & Ice' and 'Genesis Revisited Hammersmith 2013'
IMHO, Spectral Mornings is the best album from the Genesis & solo library. If this planet had to choose the best versatile guitarist of all time who can play nearly everything in outstanding quality, Mr. Hackett would win hands down. Genesis & Mr. Hackett influenced millions of people (carbon fiber units), musicians & artists all over this planet. This makes the autobiography a must read for all music lovers.
Good to know! I look forward to checking it out. I love Steve's era with Genesis and I saw GTR at the Lyric Opera House in Baltimore back in the day but I still have a lot to discover from his solo albums. 👍🤘👊
I was there too...straight from a company softball game. I saw Genesis there doing Trick of the Tale in 1975, I believe. Steve has always been one of my personal guitar heroes. I have been playing since the early 1970's and remember learning Horizons in high school and teaching it to just about everyone that played guitar. Steve is a prolific writer and writing high quality songs for as long as he has is quite an accomplishment. Just try writing one good song and you will find out just how hard it is.
Man, how awesome that you caught the “Trick of the Tail” tour! That’s one my my all-time favorites. I love the title track and from what I gather they never played it live. My one and only Genesis show was the upper deck at RFK stadium (Washington, D.C.) in 1986 or so. A great night! I'm happy to dive into Steve's solo work now. These chats are fantastic.
@@thesunshinemanmusic Are you into Steve's solo mayetial ot Genesis Revisited - or both? I just saw them twice and binged on 5 of his live albums inbetween. My favoirites are the Selling England show, the Liverpool show and the Seconds Out show. I also have a bunchbof Genesis CDs on vinyl but my Steve solo albums are on vinyl so I haven't played them in ages. May get some on CD soon.
Hi Dave! I’m very familiar with the Steve era Genesis stuff. I still have a lot of Steve's solo work to discover. I expect to thoroughly enjoy it and strike gold when I get a chance to really dive in. I’m a musician myself and always looking for inspiration. That’s so cool that you have all that vinyl. I grew up on vinyl in the 70s and spent a lot of time a few years ago listening to albums on my buddy's record player. I love listening to music that way. I just have to get myself a record player again. 🎸😎👍
I bought a Marshall 100 watt amp years ago , opened it up and there was a note inside ..it said this amp is owned by Steve Hackett ..my question is did you own this amp ?
With Genesis Revisited 2 you proofed that everyone from Genesis is expandable, except you. Haa.. I'm joking little bit of course but we use to say in every joke is a grain of truth. If I listen to Genesis the most thrilling, captivating are always your accompaniments and solos. So for me you are the soul of Genesis.
So do I. However the suggestion by Steve Hackett that Robert Fripp ingnored him since THE CHEESE LAUGH IN THE FACE is not completely true. Fripp himself suggested that without Fripp there could not be a King Crimson. Except if they should manage to get master Hackett to take his place.
I read your autobiography with delight. You're definately my Friend now Steve. But I would have very much liked a genuine autograph instead of the printed one in the book. I know you're awfully busy making bucks but this is not what you promised.

Dr Crippen what a pathetic comment.
how poor you are 👎🏼
