No it's udupi districk in side karkala taluk
The smoky kitchen has a porous ceiling for smoke to escape. These ceilings were used to stack rice bags (the shape of a big ball) of about 40 Kg size called Mude. Mudes were made using rice hay and ropes made of twisted hay. These were stacked on the porous ceiling of the smoky kitchen to preserve the rice from pests. The smoke emanating from the kitchen stove used to keep them free of pests. Such a ceiling with only joists and some cross reapers is called Kuttatt in Konkani. I can't remember the Tulu word for it right now.

mza agya bhai! I lived in udupi many years back and been to karkala only once. i regret the fact that i didn't explore much of the place and the culture then. however, i can tell you, i am one of the few outsiders there who actually had some local friends. country side home is my dream. still in pursuit.
