Before he turned physics upside down, a young Albert Einstein supposedly showed off his genius by devising a complex riddle involving a stolen exotic fish and a long list of suspects. Can you resist tackling a brain teaser written by one of the smartest people in history? Dan Van der Vieren shows how.

I love puzzles like these. You're given vague information and multiple clues, then you have to sort people into categories based on the clues. I love it! My math teacher had four puzzles like this for me to solve just before Christmas break and I spent almost the entire hour and a half of class working on them. One of the best math classes I've ever had this year!
do you know where your teacher found riddles like this one? they're my absolute favourite but Idk where i can find and do more.
@@kaitlynstertz9079 No, sorry. I wish I did. They're my favorite kind of puzzle too!
If you love puzzles like these, PennyPress and Dell create puzzle books that are devoted to LOGIC. I spend every single day solving them, which is probably why I solved the puzzle in under 3 minutes. Anyway, if you decide to buy one of their puzzle books, make sure you either get the "Math and Logic Puzzles book", or their just plain "Logic Puzzles." They offer lots of other kinds of puzzles, but those are the best ones. I'm addicted. EDIT: Many of their puzzles are MUCH harder than this one, but then again, there are logic puzzles that are super easy in the beginning of the books.

+Caio S That means you realize it's wasting your life and pointless. 5 IQ points for you.
***** No need to assume I feel like I'm better than everyone because I make a comment. That's your own projection. Math solves real problems. This is a fake problem. You can do the math and figure that out right? What is the purpose of making and solving fake problems when there are real ones out there to use your brain on; there is none other than practice, understanding. Once you understand you are supposed to move on.
Riddles like these aren't nearly as fun as real ones. Math, after all, was created to solve real problems, not practice on fake ones. My point is this TedEd celebrates the practice, and suggests Einstein had a hand in making it to draw attention to it. Even they admit he did not later. Which is baseless sensationalism.
Nick Steele Technically everything is mathematical, so does that mean that things that waste our time, such as fake problems, and my comment actually does not waste our time? :o
Fake riddles, helps you perceptualize real problems, and situations. This riddle was a matter or Organization, Observation, and Elimination. It helps improve our senses to be able to detect and understand things with better thought, as well as quickens our eliminations and make faster decisions. This way, when we come across any type of situation, we can narrow down selections to make a better judgement.
Also, "Einstien's Riddle" is the common known name for the riddle he spoke about. That is why they talked about that subject at the end. As a matter of fact, they even give you the reason as to why Einstein did not make this with the use of Observation and Elimination.
It was something so simple to search up, yet you had reason to believe that TED-Ed "suggests Einstein had a hand in making it to draw attention to it."
Sometimes, the easiest of answers are right under the nose. That's why I love riddles. ^_^

I first came across this puzzle in the book named discrete mathematics by Rosen... Even there appeared the suggestion to use grids to solve it.. But dunno why i couldn't solve it back then but suddenly when i saw the word Sudoku in this video i suddenly could connect to the problem (maybe coz i solve em too often) and when that hit me i could see it as a sudoku version with verbal constraints rather than numerical... Thanks to the narrator for the insight... And love this riddle series.. Keep throwing more of em for us to solve
What I ended up doing is drawing up a chart of houses numbered 1-5, and drew lines to separate each house, as well as each category: Nationality, Color of the house, pet, drink, and Cigar. Then on the side I wrote down each article in each category, like Norwegian, Milk, Pall Mall, etc. Then I went through the clues until I could find something I could place on the list, starting with 9: The Norwegian lives in the first house. I then wrote down Norwegian under the column for the first house, in the row dedicated to Nationality, and I crossed Norwegian off my list on the side. I then systematically went through each clue, filling in what I could, as well as putting in possibilities, until I ruled out all but one option. I did this until I filled in everything but the Fish, which I placed in the final empty slot, and deduced that the German in the 4th house with Green walls who smoked Prince and drank Coffee stole the Fish.

Partially because when I looked up the clues, a version of it stated that it was only to the left of the white house (which to me meant ANY house to the left).

There's an app called "Einstein's Riddle Logic Puzzle"
@ OP, The best I've found are the old school printed puzzle books (shout out to my mom for getting me hooked!). You can find logic problems in puzzle books put out by Penny Press & Dell. They have variety puzzle books that are released monthly, quarterly, etc, that will have like 4 to 8 logic puzzles included in the book with other puzzles. You can also find special editions by the same publisher that are books with only logic puzzles in them instead of a variety puzzle book. You can find these in the magazine aisle in some grocery stores, or you can order them online.
Brain Games also makes printed books that are decent.
