    I reckon the story of fun Fiestas starts with the mk1 Supersport which was a 1.3 with the wheels and bodykit that later went on the 1.6 XR2.

    ST150 with a few subtle changes to Ford's original restrictive stock parts makes it one of the most fun cars you will ever drive! And not to mention will stand up to all the other hatches of that era. A shame Ford restricted It so much otherwise maybe would have been up there with the Type R etc...

    @MrZekToR Před 5 lety +16

    I tuned a MK2 XR2 to 135 HP in the 90's. Got it into a popular motoring magazine at the time. NOT Max Power! Mine looked completely stock bar a different exhaust. 135 HP is not a lot today, but with only 840 kg to pull along it was plenty fast at the time. No turbocharged either. It was a bored out 1600, with high lift cam, twin Weber's, etc. People moan about the CVH engine. But the tuned example in my car went very well, revved nicely and sounded utterly awesome. It was an utter riot to drive. Now re-living those lightweight hot hatch days in the latest turbo Swift Sport. With 975 kg to pull, and approx. 163 HP on tap using premium fuel. It is plenty quick enough. Supremely agile with such lightweight. Everyone should drive a lightweight car with a decent chassis. They would then realise just how lifeless heavy cars are to drive. No matter how powerful. Great video!

      I had a 1984 mk2 cvh with knackered valve seals. Polished ported uprated cam new valve seals went like stink disillusioned a lot of golf gti's .looked std kept the Pirelli's never had any problems with braking or steering. I think nowadays everyone is used to " power brakes " not " power assisted " as a mechanic I have seen servos get bigger and bigger requiring more and more vacuum to work and with a servo failure they are virtually unstoppable. Oh on the latest ecoboost crap coming through the workshop thick and fast now with head gaskets and water seals. If only slightly over heated the variable valve system seizes....DOH.. my little white C477JOK the XR2 was so much fun and so reliable back in the eighties wish I was young again.

    • @therealdunketh
      @therealdunketh Před 4 lety +2

      Mine had Stage 2 head, 285 cam, DMTR carb.. went like stink. Probably nowhere near even 120bhp but the immediacy and driveability was amazing. The larger twin choke carb barked like a dog and it was a joy to drive. Fuel consumption was pitiful though given the performance. You could watch the needle dive :(
      Of course in those days you did it all yourself on the roadside outside your house. No laptops, no sending it to the tuners with a blank cheque.

    • @MrZekToR
      @MrZekToR Před 4 lety +2

      @@therealdunketh Totally agree, you didn't need tons of power to pull 840kg of car along. But yes, the feel of the car from behind the wheel is lost with modern cars. Same here, most mods / tuning was done outside my parents house, or in a friends garage. Only the final tuning of the timing / twin carbs was entrusted to a rolling road tuner. Great times.

    • @MrZekToR
      @MrZekToR Před 4 lety +1

      @@mazdaman1286 Yes, I have such great memories from behind the wheel of my tuned XR2. I was in my early to mid 20's at that point. 135 HP in an 840kg car was a riot back then. So light and chuckable, and plenty fast enough. I've had many more powerful and heavier cars since that point. But none of those bigger, heavier more powerful cars have felt more 'alive' than my old XR2 did. So, 3 years ago I decided to abandon overweight, powerful cars and get back into something lightweight - but reasonably quick. Straight-line performance for me is secondary to the driving experience. So in 2016, bought a new NA Suzuki Swift Sport. 1040kg in weight - 136 HP. Here was a modern car that was as close to the concept of an XR2 as I could find... and it was bl**dy awesome fun. So much so, that 2 years later - I bought the new 2018 turbocharged Swift Sport. Even lighter at 975kg. Again, it is a total riot to drive. You can have fun anywhere in cars like these. Epic handling, supreme agility and chuckability… it's like an XR2 on steroids. I'm having more fun now behind the wheel than I've had with cars for a long time... right back to the XR2 days. Awesome.

    Escort RS Cosworth is the very best of any hot hatch Ford ever made. Mind you at £30k for a quality one these days there are plenty of fantastic cheap alternatives. The best dirt cheap one is the Puma with the Yamaha 1.7 engine of course! 1000 of your British pounds buys a decent one in need of a little love but perfectly serviceable otherwise. Generally the rear arches get bubbled up but it's not a disaster, and not too expensive to have tidied up professionally. Besides this the mk5 Fiesta ST where £2500 gets a good un, and my personal favourite pick the mk2 Focus ST with the muscular Volvo 2.5 five cylinder turbo. A decent example can be had these days for a mere £4k, £5k gets a mint low mileage early one.

    Great vid.... but no XR2i CVH to demo?? Was a cool car....may not have looked as good as the MK2.... but was EFi injection and was a nice drive...and was sporty looking with the blue strip and XR2i badging on the carpets.

    You forgot to say that back in the 80’s the XR2 was a joke compared to a 205 GTi for example. A rubbish cvh engine, carb fed, interior from the 70’s, drums at the back too I think. An absolutely hopeless car but with a dose of nostalgia I guess it must seem fun. But really, they were rubbish.😂

I own a st150 08 plate and i love it holds any corner i throw it into without the aftermarket suspension tweaks. Fair play it love a visit to the petrol station but i didn't buy it for fuel economy i bought it for the the fun factor. Probably look at at mk3 focus st next or maybe the mk7 st200. I love evrything behind that badge

    You don't know why anyone would fiddle with their car?
    Before I have purchased my cars I want to change it so it isn't the same as all the others.
    My drive to work this morning had me noticing the fiesta. In front of me was a black one and in front of that was another black one 6 months younger. Got to an island and wow there was yet another black fiesta going around it. Before this black fiesta invasion dispersed and there was just 1 left I passed another parked in a driveway.
    Change the car in some way? Damn right I would.

      Let me guess, you are selling so you can buy something RWD or AWD having pissed a load of money of a FWD car before realising its very obvious handling limits......
