    What's happened to triples?
A total of 162 MLB players have hit at least 100 triples in their careers. Of all the top triples hitters with at least one season played in 1960 or later, which is roughly the half way point in the modern era, there are only 27, or 16.7%, with 100 triples! The top 18 all-time triples hitters all played before 1960!
Post-1960 hitters with at least 100 triples, listed lowest to highest:
No. triples / Player / Years Played / Avg per Year
    102 / Juan Samuel / 1983-1998 (16) / 6.38
    102 / Bill Bruton / 1953-1964 (12) / 8.50
    106 / Garry Templeton / 1976-1991 (16) / 6.63
    109 / Johnny Damon / 1995-2012 (18) / 6.06
    109 / Richie Ashburn / 1948-1962 (15) / 7.27
    112 / Nellie Fox / 1947-1965 (19) / 5.89
    112 / Rod Carew / 1967-1985 (19) / 5.89
    113 / Tim Raines / 1979-2002 (24) / 4.71
    114 / Paul Molitor / 1978-1998 (21) / 5.43
    115 / Jimmy Rollins / 2000-2016 (17) / 6.76
    116 / Kenny Lofton / 1991-2007 (17) / 6.82
    117 / Lance Johnson / 1987-2000 (14) / 8.36
    120 / Mickey Vernon / 1939-1960 (22) / 5.45
    123 / Carl Crawford / 2002-2016 (15) / 8.20
    124 / Steve Finley / 1989-2007 (19) / 6.53
    126 / Robin Yount / 1974-1993 (20) / 6.30
    127 / Vada Pinson / 1958-1975 (18) / 7.06
    131 / Jose Reyes / 2003-2018 (16 years) / 8.19
    131 / Brett Butler / 1981-1997 (17) / 7.71
    135 / Pete Rose / 1963-1986 (24) / 5.63

    140 / Willie Mays / 1951-1973 (23) / 6.09
    141 / Lou Brock / 1961-1979 (19) / 7.42
    147 / Willie Wilson / 1976-1994 (19) / 7.74
    166 / Roberto Clemente / 1955-1972 (18) / 9.22
    177 / Stan Musial / 1941-1963 (only 22 due to WWII) / 8.05
    Notes:
-- Aside from rare inside-the-park home runs, triples are the most exciting hits in baseball from a base running standpoint. Few plays involve so many players moving on the field so quickly. Usually, line drives are struck over or between outfielders, who must dash back for the ball while the runner rounds the bases. Nearly all defenders are involved, including infielders taking cutoff throws from the outfielders and infielders attempting to tag out the runner at third base. Base runners ahead of the batter may initiate throws to home plate.
-- Some ballparks have deeper outfield alleys that are more conducive to triples, and hitters play half their games at home.
-- Some otherwise good triples hitters may bat behind slower runners who hold them up on the bases.
-- Some players with chronic knee and ankle issues (Mickey Mantle) may have been held up at second base routinely, as a precaution.
-- Some outfielders with great throwing arms (Roberto Clemente, Dwight Evans) may have caused would be triples hitters to hold up at second base, thus skewing results somewhat.
-- The best of the post-1960 era, Stan Musial, is tied for 19th place with Rabbit Maranville.
-- Roberto Clemente tied for 27th place all-time, but clearly was king of the post-1960 era, averaging 9.22 triples a year! He also faced a slew of HOF pitchers on a regular basis, including Spahn, Niekro, Drysdale, Koufax, Gibson, Carlton, Bunning, Marichal, Perry, Jenkins, Seaver and Ryan, most of whom were strikeout pitchers.
-- Mickey Vernon played only one of his 22 years in this era (1960 only).
-- Per year averages for players with really long careers may include some tail end years where the player wasn't nearly as fast a runner.
-- Some were fast but not particularly great hitters (Willie Davis .279 BA, Steve Finley .271 BA)
-- Some were fast and great hitters (Willie Mays, Roberto Clemente)
-- Fast runners and great hitters NOT on this post-1960 list include Ted Williams (71 in 19 years, the last in 1960), Mickey Mantle (72 in 18 years), Hank Aaron (98 in 23 years), Frank Robinson (72 in 21 years), Ichiro Suzuki (96 in 18 years through 2018), Wade Boggs (61 in 18 years), Tony Gwynn (85 in 20 years), Tony Oliva (48 in 15 years), Rickey Henderson (66 in 25 years) , Maury Wills (71 in 14 years), Cesar Cedeno (60 in 17 years), and Curtis Granderson (94 in 15 years, a 6.27 average).
