  • One of the overlooked things on the GOLF MK1 is the VACUUM ADVANCE UNIT attached to the Distributor. This could be worn, and you may not even be aware.. Symptoms are Eratic Idle, Hesitation, Jerking, Bad fuel economy... Some tips to ponder on.

      Low suspension, get extended mountings to add the extra travel space for the shocks. Will significantly enhance the ride quality

    Hi, i have a 1.3 carburetor chico... Air builds up in tank when reaching high revs... Checked the breather pipe all clear... When i pull the fuel line out the air releases... Doesnt release by the fuel cap only the fuel line

    @PJ I have this problem whereby when driving over 120 at gear 5, my car idles super loud. When I put down into 4th gear the idling noise comes down rapidly.
    None of this is having an impact on the Rev counter. It's just the high low noises.

      Hi I'm not sure if I understand you...you say you going at 120..then car idles loud ...but it can't be idling at that speed..it's probably doing around 3.5 to 4 rpm

    Hey PJ, any idea if this Vacuum is being used while using a Weber 32/34 dmtl carb...? Instead of the peirburg carb... I have the weber installed and my suction hose goes onto one of the two points on the brake servo pipe, the 2nd is sealed with a rubber an screw. As far as i know the weber carb does not have a connection on rear for this hose.

      @@pjs-golfmk1-diy definitely helps. My mk2 1986 vw scirocco has had hesitation problems for years and I have tried everything, mainly fuel related but your video has made me think it could be the vacuum advance.

    Hello, thanks for the video very informative.MK1, I have a heavy oil leak by the O ring distributor. I have changed the O ring numerous times but still gets worse. Am starting to think its more than just the O ring but something else. Any advice, asblief PJ🙏🙏

      No the vacuum advance wouldn't cause that. Maybe a timing issue. Check your valve timing and ignition timing.. Then there could also be an issue which could be carb related

    I have a 1.6 city golf and it misfires when cold what could be the problem but when its hotter is running perfectly

      Could be a misfire due to moisture in your electronics,or overfueling,or just running too rich on fuel

    the carb is not sucking air from that vacuum, but when i do it by mouth it moves. so how do i fix that problem , uncle pj?

      While it idles it you won't really feel it sucking ..but when you rev the engine it should..Try again ,but rev the engine this time..

      @@pjs-golfmk1-diy thank you uncle pj. and also when i switch on my headlights it starts idling slow. then when i suck on that vaccum pipe. it starts idling same speed as when i switch off the headlights. but when i stop sucking it idles slow again

    mine has the vacuum hose completely removed. Is it necessary to put it back on or can I just leave it off?

      Sorry I don't think I mentioned that there is a repair kit available ..I was using some pics as examples showing how others have repaired their diaphragm..

    I bought a distributor that has no vacuum for my carburator 1.3.
    Will it affectthe carburator.? How does it affect it. Should i get one with a distributor?

      If it's carb model...you will need distributor with a vacuum advance

I think it would be great if you had a whatsapp group with all VW Mk1 owners to share issues and ideas more faster. These cars are really great. Its my first car and I love everything aboutit.     On my mk1 2005 model I'm also experiencing that hesitation/jerk when accelerating, my distributor does not have the vacuum advance, would I need to get a distributor with the vacuum advance as the carb has been serviced and cleaned?

      Thank you sir . Your model is a later one which had no vacuum advance.. Its supposed to be a better technology, but Jerking and hesitation is not only related to the vacuum advance unit... It could be a number of things, like ignition timing, air fuel mixture not correct etc...

    Hi guys can anyone help me .? I am running A vw caddy pickup 1600 carburator . It dies under acceleration like you going to stuck with petrol .. no power and dies .. it starts up again when u turn the key to start iv changed the petrol pump petrol separator new plugs new plug wires new coil new petrol filter blew the petrol pipes clean drained the petrol tank .. put on another carb i borrowd . Put in another battery ..another rotor and rotar cap put in a new mudulator ( blackbox ..) new harness cable plug .. i dont know what to do aymore. It still dies while under load .. looses power and stalls .. what can i still look for ? It starts fine i check for vacum leaks already checked the base plate .. its still ok ..thanks

      It's very hard to say what noise it could be ..I would suggest you take car to a suspension fitment workshop.They will diagnose it very quickly..

    The vacuum coming from the carb is weak and it does not advance the distributor, the distributor is new

      When u say it's weak... Is that at idle? .. Then it will be weak... It's when, u accelerate that the carbs port pulls harder on the Vacuum Advance

      You can clean it and patch up holes if there are in the rubber diaphragm.. But most people just buy a new distributor which comes with a new vacuum advance

    Uncle PJ i need help ...My Mk1 dont want to start it has no spark but it does crank ...i changed the distributor cap and rotor and the coil module but still no spark

      Did you replace the coil? ... You say you replaced module... But u shud focus on the coil first

    Hi PJ, I'm having the following problem with my Mk1... when the car is idling the revs go from 1000 and drop to about 800 and back up and back down constantly even when the engine is hot
    Sometimes my revs drop so low that the engine almost cuts out but it stays idling at around 200 to 300 revs. I have recently serviced the car myself- all new filters, oil, spark plugs and flushed radiator and put new coolant in.
    Any Idea what it could be or what I could try and check to solve it?

      Hi. You could check on your ignition timing. Have it set accurately with a timing light. Also check for Airleaks around the brake servo pipe. And carb base plate.

    Hi PJ I got a replica carb, in which hole should the vacuum advance pipe go, as the idle is low and bad to the vacuum in the middle pipe, Currently I had to connect my vacuum adv pipe to the servo pipe, I noticed that there is two pipes connected to my servo but it does not work as my aircon is not working, should I block those two out and maybe the suction will be stronger at the carb?

      @@chadkramer9684 use the middle one and block off the other 2...if u leave any of these ports open.,it will lean out the fuel mixture...and you will have a rough unstable idle and general performance will be sluggish..

      @PJ's - GOLF Mk1 - DIY what about those two pipes on ther servo, can I block them off too, because my aircon is not working so I think their is coming in air through that pipe therefor the carb is not giving enough suction to the vacuum pipe

      @@chadkramer9684 yes best to block them off ...As a test,....with the engine idling ,just put your finger over the holes and u will hear the idle smooth out ..You can not leave those pipes on the servo open ..if it's not playing any roles...block it off

      Yes that's another part that plays up. The hall sender.... But you say there was petrol in the diaphragm. Can u maybe just give more detail... Do u mean the Vacuum Advance diaphragm

    Hi PJ...should it make a difference in idle when disconnecting the vacuum line from the vacuum advance on a carburetor engine? Coz I get suction from that line connected at the back of the ks2 carb but it doesn't seem to be that strong vacuum...car idles fine though no difference in idle when disconnecting that line. just has a bit of a delay on acceleration from a stand still...and did suck on the vacuum advance it holds pressure. It's a mk2 1.8 GTS Thanks

      Hi. You won't really feel a difference when pulling the pipe off when it's at normal idle... Only if u keep engine on a Rev and then pull off pipe will u hear a difference, but that delay can have something to do with the ignition timing, or an airleak elsewhere... But do check pull off that vacuum advance pipe and check it thoroughly for ruptures or tears... Also try to set your ignition timing with a timing light if you have one..

      @@pjs-golfmk1-diy Thank you for the reply, yes I did it with my timing light, ok I'll double check for air leaks...I just want the right procedure of doing the advance timing...should I do it with the vacuum pipe disconnected with someone keeping the revs at say 2500 or is there no need for it?

      @@jonb4667 when doing ignition timing you must remove the pipe and also block it up temporarily while u doing the ignition timing, and then put back once u set it on the mark

    I have a carb MK1 and the Distributor installed doesnt have the advance, i do get the erattic idle and hesitation, so is it a must that the carb mk1 must run with the distributor that has an advance or it doesnt matter ?

      Well your car doesn't need vacuum advance cause u probably have a later model... What model are u driving?

      @@pjs-golfmk1-diy Its 1998 Chico model. I remember when i first bought the car it did have the distributor with the advance but when it stopped working i bought the one without. The carburetor is also the new Keihin carbs

      @@vuyolwethuqongqo Find yourself a manual for that carburettor. Find where the Idle Jet, CO screw(mixture screw) and Idle Air Bypass (of your model carb has one) are located. A very minor air leak around the idle jet can cause what you may be experiencing, erratic idle, hesitation on lower revs but clears on higher revs (because idle jet is not being used much, instead the main jet takes over). As everything complex, the main thing about carburetors is to maintain it clean and sealed with good quality seals. Also high etanol fuel WILL destroy your carb seals, fuel lines and vacuum diaphragms.

      I have a 1.6 carb engine… on cold start it has a slight misfire on cylinder 2 , ive done compression text, changed cables and plugs and i still have the same situation.. could it also be the vacuum?
