  • Have you ever thought to yourself, "I wish I were ____"? Adjectives may have included: thinner, taller, smarter, etc. If so, you're like virtually everyone else, and afflicted by "The Missing Tile Syndrome." As Dennis Prager explains, we often focus on the missing tile(s) in our lives, which robs us of happiness. In five minutes, learn how to fix your focus.

    Script:
I would like you to imagine sitting in a room, looking up at a tiled ceiling. And you notice that one tile is missing - just one. What would you concentrate your vision on? What would you look at the most? The answer of course, is the missing tile.
Now, that’s fine for ceilings, in fact it’s actually good because we can replace a ceiling’s missing tile and once again have a perfect ceiling. Ceilings, after all, can be perfect. But this doesn’t apply to life. Most of what is missing in our lives, or what we think is missing, cannot be replaced. Unlike a ceiling, life can never be made perfect. For that reason, concentrating on the missing tiles in your life is a big problem.
Let me give you the example that taught me this great lesson about what I call The Missing Tile Syndrome.
A bald man once said to me, “You know, Dennis, whenever I walk into a room with people, all I see is hair. When I heard this I immediately realized in this regard this man sees the world completely differently from how I do. Because I have all my hair, when I walk into a room I don’t even notice hair. It’s not a missing tile for me. But for this person, hair is what he sees. This applies, in some way, to everyone.
When a woman who thinks she has imperfect legs walks into a room, all she sees are perfect legs. Or take the example of the woman who once said to me, “Wherever I go, all I see are pregnanyt women.” Now how could that be? The vast majority of women, even those young enough to be pregnant, are not pregnant at any given time. But that was all she saw because she wanted to get pregnant and wasn’t able to. Her missing tile was not having a child. That’s the way human nature is: we focus on what’s missing in our lives.
The Missing Tile Syndrome is a very big obstacle to happiness. So big, in fact, that it makes happiness almost impossible. There will always be something missing in your life. When you see other people’s kids, you’ll think you see tiles that are missing in your own children. “Gee, why can’t my kids study as hard, or be as polite, or be as bright, or be as good looking, or be as athletic.” The same holds true regarding our spouses, our work, our looks. The list is endless.

That would bug me too. I had a monitor that started out that way, and after a year it just stopped working. It was brand new too. Thankfully I had an extended warranty for five years, and the new monitor has so far lasted me nearly seven years without any problems.

I got mine from my father, who got it as a spare from a friend... So even if it was under warranty, I wouldn't have any way of proving such. Besides, it's a nice monitor otherwise, so I can hardly complain about it. If I was really desperate, I could always go back to my previous monitor.

    • @libertyprime69
      @libertyprime69 Pƙed 10 lety +17

That's because that bad pixel has the power to influence other, more young and impressionable pixels around it to become bad. I suggest you and the senior pixels get together and expel that pixel from the monitor. You should then replace it with a constantly white pixel that is also blindingly bright. Maybe some of that brightness will rub off on the younger generation.

He asked the Apple what's wrong. "My fruits aren't as juicy as the Pear's!" it said.
He asked the Pear what's wrong. "My fruits aren't as pretty as the Orange's!" it said.
He then asked the Orange what's wrong. "My fruits aren't as hard as the Walnut's!" it said.
In the middle of all their bickering, he noticed a small, yellow flower on the ground.

you don't focus on anything! the key is balance. You have to pay an equal amount of time to both, the tiles that you have, and the ones that you don't, you need to be thankful for what you are given, proud of your accomplishments, and working towards your goals. I live in a third world country that i want to leave, i am young and inexperienced, i have plenty of personality issues that i need to work on, those are missing tiles i keep in mind all the time, however, i find myself thinking about my achievements all the time, thinking about how far i've come in such a short time, thinking about all the things that other people are jealous about me, all the tiles i have and others don't. With proper balance comes undoubtedly encouragement "sure i can get that tile i'm missing! look al all of this other tiles i was missing in the past and now i have!" The question, when thinking about happiness, is not "do you have everything you want" but rather "can you get everything you want?" if the answer to the latter is yes, then you are going to be happy, even in the face of adversity, happiness isn't something you reach, it's a lifestyle that you program your brain to follow.

+marshma llowsxoxo I see your point, however; I wouldn't say it's a perfect 50-50 balance. In another PragerU video (Happiness equation) it is discussed that the biggest source of unhappiness is "image" and that ideal perception of what we "should" have (the missing tile) That image makes us compare ourselves to others which inevitably leads to unhappiness. I'd argue that ambition is what makes your ceiling better NOT completed. You don't need those missing tiles (not always) to find happiness. I'd ask you the same question "Can you get everything you want?"
Now, how often is your answer "yes"? Probably, there will always be something you want and you can't get. So the best possible answer to your own question is more like, "sometimes, yes" or "yes, for now"
Then, even from your perspective happiness is a endless race of fulfilling missing tiles, and that's not real happiness.
      Peace :)

Thank you for "The Missing Tile Syndrome" video. Now I know why I am so happy. All my life I have been happy and now I know it is because I have always been happy with what I have and where I was in life at that moment. I've never wanted riches or beauty or something that someone else has. No, what I have is enough. I am not poor nor am I rich but I am comfortable. I have a wife that loves me and I love her. We have four children, eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. A good (not perfect) family. To me it is not a bad thing to be in the middle of the road. God is good all the time.

"If I find in myself desires which nothing in this world can satisfy, the only logical explanation is that I was made for another world."- C.S. Lewis
I believe Lewis had a very firm grasp on this idea of The Missing Tile Syndrome. There are things in this life that leave a void so great that they simply cannot be overlooked:
-Restless War in the middle East.
-Desparity of wealth across the globe.
-Continued loss of morality, the very thing that sets humans apart.
The list could go on and on! Cast aside any of these, and the noise of the thing that is not in fact there (yet we believe it should be), becomes deafening. No amount of other things can fill the empty space; like a rich man who can't buy happiness or joy.
That feeling however was created for a purpose. This "other world" that Lewis speaks about is not just some fairy tale in the mind. Or even a story he's written like any of the Narnia books. It's the promise of God in his word given to comfort us as we bear this life for the lost. Given because this world we live in will pass away like a house ablaze, and in its place he will create a new world, with every tile in its space.
"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea no longer existed. I also saw the Holy City, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband. Then I heard a loud voice from the throne: 'Look! God’s dwelling is with humanity,
and He will live with them.
    They will be His people,
and God Himself will be with them
    and be their God.
He will wipe away every tear from their eyes.
    Death will no longer exist;
grief, crying, and pain will exist no longer,
because the previous things have passed away.' Then the One seated on the throne said, “Look! I am making everything new. ” He also said, “Write, because these words are faithful and true.”
    Revelation 21:1-5

When you go around you look and see everyone else being happy and having fun, and feel like that's what you're missing. the choice is not that simple. you need to analyze if the missing tile is something in your control. if you're obese, you can always eat a little less, and exercise a little more. that will not just help you look better and feel better about the way you look, but it will also improve your health.
if your missing tile is something out of your control, then i agree completely. just let it go, and focus on what makes you happy.

You just perfectly explained why I'm generally a happy person despite being ill from a mystery disease as well as a lot of physical problems, forced into poverty because of not being able to work, survived ovarian cancer, and suddenly losing my stepdad in February. The state appointed SSDI psychologist even remarked at how amazed he was that I wasn't suffering from situational depression. Sure I get upset, even angry (like when I was denied SSDI), but I naturally focus on what I do have...my family, my friends, even my pets. Money is very important. But it's not the only thing we need in life and for a lot if people, including myself, lack of money is a gaping ceiling tile. Our life isn't easy by any means, but it's EASIER because I'm happy to have these people in my life and couldn't imagine life without. And no amount of money would or could ever replace a single one of them.

No one said that people won't look at the missing tile(s) -- everyone looks. And yes, sometimes, it can motivate us to improve and achieve greater things. Yet the point is not to spend all our time focusing on them as individuals because, most of the time, doing so doesn't serve to motivate and improve us, but rather, to frustrate us.

So true. I also notice perfect legs and pregnanat women. And cute children and thin waists. And when people love their work. And when women are great at flirting. And beautiful houses or gardens. Lol this is a sad list. But I also notice when people have beautiful smiles and I have no complex regarding that =]

The problem with this is deciding where to draw the line. Most people don't really put much of a thought into something like this, but please, hear me out. When you try to follow this kind of advice, most people will either go for either
A: Trying too hard to balance focusing on the parts missing, and what we have,
    or
B: Not trying hard enough to balance and therefore either become increasingly ignorant of all other views.
This is a serious problem, and I think it's what has started most of our societal collapses as of recently (2008-today).
I'd love to have a long and dignified discussion about this with someone.

I never thought I'd say this in the comments section of a PragerU video, but...I actually agree with and appreciate just about everything that was said! My only major criticism is he could have focused more on how to focus on the "tiles" we do have instead of summarizing the problem for most of the video.

IÂŽm a big fan of Prager U's work. Most of the time, discussing the themes you board lets me clarify my thougths and set my posture on many complicated issues; this time is not the exception, nevertheless i would add something on today's reflection: You should first and foremost identifie the "tiles" you can do something about and those you can't. The ideal scenary would be: take adventage of the good tiles, if they're really important and there is an achievable way to fix the missing tiles, then fix them and at last, accept the fact that there will be tiles that you cannot do something about.

The tool for being happy right here right now was givven to us long ago by our Jewish sages.
It is said in Pirkei Avot (Chapter 4 Mishna 1/b): "Who is rich? He who is satisfied with his lot"
Meaning: happiness is the art of taking pleasure in what you have. Unhappiness is the art of focusing on what you don’t have.
