As a Leeds fan mate we've had very few moments to remember in your lifetime. I'm an older fan, I was lucky enough to see us lift the last Division 1 title before it became the Premier League.
My opinion is Bielsa as much as he is adored, was never sustainable, his training and bizarre choice of a small squad just burnt us out, and we are still suffering from that burn out.
We sacked him at the wrong time and hired at the wrong time. So we essentially sabotaged a transfer window, I feel now the team we have is good enough, but it's new and players have yet to gel. Marsch was the wrong man for the job, now don't get me wrong he is a great scout, and bringing in Adams, Sinisterra etc are amazing signings. But was too one dimensional.
Ask any Leeds fan, they'll tell you we have been screaming out for the club to sign quality LB and get shut of the old guard, and a striker for the last 3+ years now.
Gnonto is going to be world class, but you cannot ask an 18 year old kid to step up to the role. People think we signed a striker in Rutter, the lad himself has said he isn't an out and out striker.
Good signings wrong positions and the board and recruitment team need to take the blame.

It’s not as easy as you say to get relegated and just bounce straight back up. You’ve been given a optimistic disciple of Pep in Kompany and he has transformed your squad with brilliant youth players. People see going down as a bad thing, when honestly. There are a lot of cases where going down is actually a good thing. Burnley are best example of this currently. I'd even argue Fulham at current standing. It took them a dozen tries to finally get it right.((Though I'd argue they needed to stop trying to flip the team that got them there at the time.)) Newcastle did it when we last went down. While yes, it can go badly, but going down isn't the worse thing in the world. It could be a blessing in disguise in the long run.

Sorry but I hate this take. Ask any Newcastle fan if getting relegated was a good thing for our club. All the money attached to staying up is an issue, and matters all the more for smaller clubs who are desperate for whatever revenue they can get vis-à-vis the big boys. As for Leeds, think about how long it took to get back to the top flight, and you’re fine with going back?

Having watched nearly every game in the JM era. I think under JM they had a 10% chance of getting relegated. They had finally given JM the most important pieces the LB and ST they had promised the fans and didn't get the last window. Under JM the team was always on the bad end of the wrong calls and individual mistakes away from being a great team. On a good day they could go for to toe with anyone. The fans lost their patience, which made the FO prematurely fire. JM only had 1 game with McKinney and about 2-3 games with the lb and striker they owed him. Now they have like a 35-50% shot of dropping.

I'm with you on this yeah. Why sack a manager you've backed to the hills in two transfer windows only to then sack him. I felt that they should have stuck loyal to Jesse marsch even when the going got tough. It just feels the board became far too complacent and though they were untouchable when they weren't at all and a rebuild of the squad was needed

They also sacked him before a run of 3 to 4 easier/winnable games. The new manager is worse and it’s not close… and continuing to play Bamford is a mistake. Not making adjustments when Vardy and Daka come on to defend that pace, mistake. Man sits on 3 subs and does nothing, lucky to even get a point when it should have been a win with a decent manager. How Gnonto is on the bench the entire game nobody knows.

One thing that I think should be documented more, is the negative effects of the delayed takeover from the 49ers. Liam, you talk about Bielsa's style of play, limited squad numbers and injuries that racked up and took their toll on Leeds. I drew the same parallels in my own thoughts and saw something like that coming, in the sense that if you look at his career he never stayed too long in any one place.
His international management being an exception.
If you ask the question, is he naive or stubborn? I'd say stubborn 100%. This old dog did not want to be taught many new tricks.
He has a titanic reputation in the game though (example: Guardiola is an admirer) and I almost think the topic of Bielsa himself is worth it's own video.

    @ezraezra2928 Před rokem +1

The historic Champions League campaign in 2000-01 for Leeds United was a significant because the club had almost faced Bayern Munich. This is the same opponent they faced in the final 26 years earlier, when Leeds lost 0-2 and there was a large riot in Paris after the referee decision favoured Bayern Munich at that time. Leeds are really deserved to win a lot if they managed to beat Valencia in the semifinal because they managed a clean sheet at Elland Road before losing by 3 goals in Mestalla.
A year earlier, Leeds had almost achieved this big dream against Arsenal until a big tragedy happened before the Copenhagen Final. When they faced Galatasaray in Istanbul, two fans were murdered by Turkish hooligans. It's worth noting that such a tragedy had affected the mentality for players, as Leeds eventually lost 0-2 and failed to win by at least 3-0 margin in Elland Road, as the game had ended 2-2.
What's more interesting is that there are some European clubs that entered this state after numerous big successes at that time when Leeds failed to play in Europe and eventually went down to lower divisions:
1.Parma: Although they are still yet to be crowned the scudetto, Parma has won 8 trophies between 1992 and 2002, including 2 UEFA Cups and a Cup Winners Cup in 1993. The club went bankruptcy twice, with the second one ended up in relegation to Serie D back in 2015 after financial troubles. The club was renamed twice from AC Parma to Parma FC SpA and now Parma Calcio 1913.
2.Fiorentina: They had world class players like Roberto Baggio and Gabriel Batistuta back in 1990s, but after enjoying some huge successes, including almost being qualified to the Champions League quarterfinal back in 1999-2000, the club got demoted to Serie C2 and was renamed to ACF Fiorentina.
3.Deportivo La Coruna: The club had 2 Copa del Rey titles and even won the La Liga back in 2000 with the record of worst point, plus reached the Champions League semifinal back in 2004 after a historic remontada vs Milan. After several years of big successes, the club got relegated in 2011, 2013, and 2018. After the third relegation, they never made a return and even demoted once again to third division in 2020.

After finishing 9th playing glorified training games we decided that we could do the same with better results but the problem was our championship players hit the ceiling and it wasn't addressed, Ayling, Harrison, Forshaw, Bamford, not to mention our captain is the worst centre back in the league by a distance and he was still starting games in our THIRD premier league season, the board only signed 1 defender in the last 4 transfer windows and wasted money on forwards like Dan James that we didn't need and spent about £20m too much. We've played pretty well this season but it's the same old players letting us down that let us down in the championship and the board didn't address it and that's gross negligence on their part.

I think Gracia is a good manager with a lot of good ideas, but I have a sneaking feeling the damage has already been done here. This board have consistently put their own egos ahead of the interests of the club and now we find ourselves even worse off a year down the line than we were when Bielsa left. Relegation could be a blessing in disguise, I hope that will be where we hit the big red reset button in a similar fashion to Burnley. Bielsa gave the club an identity from 2018-2021 but the thin squad and stubbornness of Bielsa to adapt was his undoing. Wish he could’ve lasted a long time but it wasn’t to be. However it would’ve been better had the board brought in someone similar rather than an American guy who spent his whole management career in the Red Bull footballing system.

When you have a director of football model you're not necessarily buying for the manager, you're building a squad that any manager should be able to work with.
The January signings weren't necessarily Marsch ones, Wober played under him but is a CB who can play most systems. Mckennie never played under Marsch or any Red Bull style and neither did Rutter.
We think another manager (now Gracia) can get more out of this squad than Jesse could, time will tel if that's correct

not being able to sign Ben White is probably what doomed Leeds United. Losing Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha was the nail on the coffin. Also Patrick Bamford being a 1 Season Wonder also affected the team.
Had they managed to get Ben White they would've most likely had an even better 1st Season and a more Stable 2nd Season.
Had Bamford kept his form and not injure so often, Leeds wouldn't had to worry about a leaky defense.
And they needed to do everything on their power to retain Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha. These 2 were their best players.
Basically Leeds had the ambitions, but they still had a Championship Mentality.

  • @AdamsGamingBros
    @AdamsGamingBros Před rokem

As a leeds fan, there's issues all across the board, the behind the scenes of the club seems to be a huge mess with no resolutions in sight, the players seem to have lost motivation and its fully infuriating, that image of them in the blankets will be forever burned in my head if we do go down, which I'd say there's a 90 percent chance of us going down, we have great young players that either don't get minutes or aren't played properly, the defence is so wishy washy that it makes starting any kind of attack hard, and the players that are performing at a semi acceptable level are being let down, a key example being our keeper Meslier, the man's saved us so many times from being like 5-6 goals down but he has absolute donkeys infront of him. Our ability to shift off the dead wood just never happened and if we did make signings they were either flash in the pan or just flat out never worked, exceptions being Raphinha and maybe Gnonto if he starts firing.

Marsch was an uninspiring hire even then, although it worked for the short term, and I see Gracia as the same kind of appointment unfortunately.
So unless they sack him again too in the summer, whether he avoids relegation or not, and find a candidate to truly improve the play of this team, I don't see any real improvement happening at all...

*Leeds didn't assemble a squad that could remain in the Premier League once they got promoted. In fact they should have done this in the Championship (like Wolves did funny enough).

Re: relegation being a blessing in disguise
It is now very different than it was 20 years ago: due to the amount of money the teams just for being in the PL and the golden parachutes, a team going down isn't put on the brink of administration by the PL wages; in fact, those relegated teams are so far ahead of everyone else financially, it doesn't really seem fair on the teams who are perennially just short of promotion. But does to not being in the PL, they can afford take chances with younger players and return to the PL with a new model (exactly what Burnley are doing).
However, I don't think Leeds need that exactly. With all due respect, Burnley last year looked like a relic, a blast from the past. Leeds are a lot younger and have a lot more high-ceiling players, so I don't think they really need a big re-build, they just need to put what they have to good use.
