  • The Pond Creek Restoration Project is currently under way at the Higbee Beach Wildlife Management Area at sunset beach.
"In the early 1900s, Pond Creek marsh was cut off from free-flowing tidal influences. The area saw further changes due to sand mining operations from a former magnesite plant, leading to the loss of precious wetlands.”
"In response, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection has embarked on a multi-phased project to restore and enhance over 400 acres of wetland and upland maritime habitat.”
"This ambitious project aims to re-establish tidal water flow to a large portion of Pond Creek marsh, reduce flood risks to the upper watershed and eastern freshwater marsh area, and enable habitat management of the northern marsh area.”
One of the most critical goals is to enhance the habitat for migratory birds, fish, and various threatened and endangered species that rely on Cape May as a vital stopover along the Atlantic Flyway each fall
The project includes recreational and educational facilities such as wildlife viewing blinds, boardwalks offering unique views from within the marsh, an expanded trail network, and interpretive signs that tell the story of this site's rich history and restoration efforts.”
Looking ahead, a future interpretive and educational facility will be situated within this diverse and ecologically significant landscape, providing even more opportunities for learning and engagement.”
This area closed back January 29, 2024 and is expected to be closed until December 2026.

I am glad to see projects that would be improving our ecosystem, waterways, and wildlife even if it disrupts our usual activities.

Sad to see the water tower go, but I think it is a nice thing and cause they are doing here. I think a park with trails and original wildlife would be cool, and tell an interesting story of the land before the Magnesite plant's time.

I remember exploring back there in the late 90s. Was a great place to hike the trails with a date. Spent many an overnight with a small fire next to Davey's Lake.

I would guess based on the description of the project that salt water would work the best. Where would a source of freshwater come from? Would it have to rely on rain. Are there springs nearby?

"how is this going to help visitors and guests" Maybe just maybe forget about shoobies that come for 2-3 months in the summer and trash our place. Why cant this project just be a project to help the enviroment we fucked up?
