  • Sarah Sze has created public art for display in New York City before, but never of this magnitude: a 50-foot-tall, five-ton constellation of images of the city she loves, in the newly-revamped Terminal B of LaGuardia Airport. Correspondent David Pogue talks with Sze about her airborne sculpture, titled "Shorter Than the Day," that serves as a welcome for visitors to the Big Apple.

I love that it is grand in size, yet only takes up a small part of of one’s view as a whole. Stunning!

Great art is sustenance. It can heal. It can motivate. It can also make us think or consider a cautionary tale along with feeding our soul. Well done!

Reminds me of this poem: Hyacinths to Feed Thy Soul -
      by Sadi
IF OF THY MORTAL GOODS thou art bereft,
And from thy slender store two loaves alone to thee are left,
Sell one, and with the dole
Buy hyacinths to feed thy soul.

I love airport art! I wish I travelled more, but when I have gotten to explore other airports, and my city's airport, I always love seeing the new installations.

I really enjoyed the profile on artist Sarah Size, and was fascinated to see the photo of her talented spouse, who I've met when he was the keynote speaker at a breast cancer conference several years ago. They're both MacArthur "genius" grant recipients, she for art, and her husband, Siddhartha Mukherjee, for medicine. He's an oncologist in New York, and the Pulitzer prize winning author "Emperor of all Maladies" what he described as a biography of cancer. The book was the basis of a multi part Ken Burns documentary a few years ago. When I learned about the accomplishments of Ms. Sze, having just met her husband, I was struck by what an amazing set of parents their daughters have, and had visions of sparkles and rainbows around those girls. Her airport installation is breathtaking!

“Why are we spending money on this?”
Art is the soul of the artist, shared with the soul of the community. Not everything is about money. Sometimes - just sometimes, it’s about emotional well being for that community. An imaginative focus provokes imagination in others, and whether we realize it or not, art drives people to create on so many levels.
Art can bring out the best in people.

Love it. Although I mainly go through JFK, I'll have to make a point to see it someday. I've seen the subway station one and nice to put a name and face (she's over 50 yrs old?! What is her secret?!) to the artwork. It'll be interesting to see how the La Guardia one is lit at night. Agree art is important, similar to adding parks in a concrete jungle.

David Pogue continues to amaze and impress us as he demonstrates the human capacity for continual growth and enrichment. His work brings a human warmth to all he does, which in turn incrases our appreciation of his subjects.

  • @davidcattin7006

Breathtaking! It must be stunning in person. As far as her saying that people don't have to like her art, Robert Longo says "...I make art for brave eyes. I don't want to make art that will pat you on the back and tell you everything is going to be okay." Yes. Art should challenge us, and make us think. Sometimes we need to be taken out of our comfort zone. Wishing Ms. Sze all the best! To think of all the people that will be seeing this beautiful work of art!!!

"You know", may put you in the cool crowd & make you think you are a knowledgeable person, but defending myself on Twitter & CZcams is no substitute for justice. What happened at AVC in Alberta in 80-83 is an example of how far this security intelligence organization was going to disrupt my progress. People got hurt. There wasn't anything here that wasn't under juvenile judicial law, or criminal law. I'm sure you have all seen the pics. There was a DA that was murdered in Seattle in 2001. My medical records are missing & my police records are incorrect. Those two matters make it difficult to make a case. Government officials know, entertainers know, yet still I am finding it difficult to get the judicial departments to act.

They did the same thing to my father that they did to me. I know who I am. If you think it would have been different for you, then you are naive. I will also take the psychiatrists word over your opinion. Everything about their actions have been manipulative. I would not be surprised if they intervened my tweets to change them slightly. Over the many years the security system took no other action but to broadcast, what they were infact inducing, the pics to the entertainment industry. There isn't one person in that industry that wasn't producing these stories & songs from me, yet no one dared come near. Even some of these people got hurt.
