RICOH THETA Battery Replacement - 100% Fixed Camera that Would Not Turn On

  • Starting with a dead RICOH THETA camera that wouldn't turn on, I purchased a LI-92B rechargeable battery online for $10 and installed it into my RICOH THETA. To my surprise, it worked perfectly after the replacement. This technique will completely void your warranty and you may damage your camera. However, if you're like me and your camera won't turn on with only a few blinking red lights on the front, then instead of throwing the camera into the recycle bin, give it one last try. Unscrew four screws and pry the camera apart from the side. Camera keeps charge.
    Another CZcamsr posted this video of the THETA V teardown including lens assembly replacement.
    • Ricoh Theta V repair, ...
    Update: As of May 22, 2023, my THETA V is still running fine with the cheap LI-92B. Holds a charge with no problem.

    A potentially useful video to help me breath some life into my dead Theta. What a pity that the important bits (opening it up to access the battery) was near impossible to view because it was (a) shot in low light, (b) silhouetted against what little light was coming in through the blinded window and (c) out of focus. I'm particularly upset about my own Theta. I've probably used it around 10 times only, then forgot about it for over a year and now it won't charge. That's 10 very expensive uses! :-( Well, thanks for trying to help us and for making me realise that I have potential options to get it up and running again.

      Your battery is likely still fine. Try plugging the camera in overnight and change the USB cable. How do you know it's not charging? Is there no power light on the side of the camera at all?

      If you have a Windows PC, plug the V into the USB port of the Windows computer and verify that the computer can see the camera. You can actually do this on a Mac as well. On windows, you can additionally right-click on the camera icon and verify that the charge of the camera. The flashing green light indicates that the V is charging. Did you leave it plugged in and blinking green for a few hours? You can also buy a USB current meter for under $10 to see if there is current going from your computer to the THETA V. Before buying anything else, plug the V into your computer and see if it charges. The flashing green means that the camera is charging, but at a low-battery level.

    • @THETA360Developers
      @THETA360Developers  Před 3 lety

      Hi, before you take it apart, are you sure it's the battery? Have you tried changing the USB cable? Plug it directly into your computer and leave it charging overnight. Just want to avoid the risk of any damage to the camera if it isn't the battery. I was super worried about opening the camera, but as mine was really dead, I had nothing to lose. I would suggest charging it with different cables and chargers first.

      @@THETA360Developers I shot a house a few days ago and it was fine. Charged it yesterday, green light went out, got to the job and it would not come on. I get a red light that quickly goes out. @@hdhomesllc9813 After you charge the V, connect it to your mobile phone and see the battery charge with the mobile app. Is it at close to 100% and it goes down very rapidly? if you have Windows, you can also plug the V into a computer with a USB cable and then right click on the camera icon to see the battery charge. The battery itself is only $7. It's still working for me. If you exhaust all other possibilities, research online for more examples of this technique. I am just sharing my experience. I would hate for someone to break their camera by taking it apart. However, if it's already dead, this technique may revive it. In the description of this video, there is another more detailed video from a different V owner. Check that one out too. Update on April 27, 2021. I just checked my THETA V again and it working fine. I think I had it off for a few weeks and when I turned it on, the charge was at 92%. If I charge it fully, it operates normally. This is about 6 weeks after the battery replacement. I still think it's a 100% fix in my case. It's possible that your battery may have had a small manufacturing flaw and that's why you only got 25 houses. be careful of the clips on the sides of the camera if you dismantle it.

    I have a Theta S that wouldn't charge, the red power light would come on momentarily then turn off. I discovered that the metal terminals inside were not making adequate contact with the battery. I opened the case, removed the battery, bent the terminals upward so that they would make better contact then reassembled and that fixed it.

      get any type of Li90B or Li02B. 3.6V, 1500mAh, 5.4Wh. It is a super common type of battery. I've been using a cheap branch of battery for a year with no problem and the camera still works great. Note that I don't work for RICOH. I wondering, is Ricoh Theta is always draining battery when they turned off? My Theta S is always had empty battery if I left it for a day unused... And the body is quite warm (not hot) while they turned off. Is board problem or battery problem? If the camera gets warm, there may be something running in the background or there may be short. Make sure you have the camera fully turned off and not in sleep mode. More community information is here: community.theta360.guide/t/theta-s-possible-battery-replacement-in-community/347?u=craig

      I have no experience with the Z1. It is a more expensive option. If it were me, I would take into a professional. If you have no option to take it into a professional and the camera is dead, I suggest searching online. If it were me, I would go to a place that replaces mobile phone batteries and try to see how much they would charge to try and replace the camera battery. This is only if you have no other choice and the camera is already dead. The battery is not designed to be user replaceable. You are supposed to send it back to RICOH for replacement.
