Pepper had so much fun filming with y'all! Now, she'll do a stand with just a hand gesture from me, and will even lie down without a lure. Love you guys! :) For anyone that's curious, we recently found out Pepper is a Chihuahua/Dachshund/Poodle mix, haha.

I have a Shiba Inu prepare for a TON of shedding and insane amount of stubbornness. This will be a big test of patience for you but if you’re prepared for both of those qualities then you’ll do just fine. They will attract attention everywhere you go. Regrettably their not the most affectionate dogs but are super loyal and super smart once you learn how to break through their hard headedness

I had such a hard time teaching my pomchi lie down. He didn’t have to lie down to get to the lure so he just bent down. We tried luring him under a leg tunnel too, and didn’t see much indication that he was getting it. We rewarded him whenever he lied down on his own and reinforced it with a command. It was his biggest training hurdle but one day it just snapped into focus for him and now he flops down enthusiastically. Patience is key, because even if you don’t think they’re learning, they are. It was a weirdly very proud day for me lol

OMG she looks so much like my Chihuahua girl. Mine has white markings, straight ears, and a bit more curled tail than Pepper though. I taught my girl the basics within a few days of getting her at 10 weeks old. She took a while to stop having accidents at night (because I kept her in a pen instead of a crate), but she had a decent handle on it during the day after a week (this was before I watched your videos). Little dogs are a lot smarter and willing than most people think.
She's also never jumped on people when they entered the house, and has never been a yapper. She never did any damage to the house, but she did destroy her bed once, and stole paper when ignored as a puppy. She also howled at the start (during the day, not just on her first nights sleeping alone), but once she realized she was ignored whenever she howled and picked up when she didn't, she stopped real quick. Since she's turned 1 years old (she's now almost 3) she's been very behaved and sleeps the whole time I'm out for my college classes (usually 2-5 hours). She just wants to cuddle all day with a few minutes of fetch here and there. Biggest sweetheart of a dog I've ever had and known. So gentle. And adores kids.

I’ve only had previous experience with large breeds, but now having a little dude (who looks eerily similar to this girl you’re working with) it’s almost like having a different species of animal altogether 😂 I don’t understand how you’re saying it’s no different?!? I am finding it SO different. I find he is far quicker with learning and retaining information, but because he’s so smart he’s also a little tricky. Far more resourceful than my big dogs were and tries to get around listening sometimes too. But always responds to gentle correction and gets back on track. He’s also more nippy and mouthy, he is a puppy and as he matures the nipping is becoming less. But I’m learning that a lot of his mouthiness is purposeful. He’s led my hand to a toy to play or mouths when he wants me to culled him on the couch. But one thing that’s been impressive is that he gets extra nippy whenever he needs to go out, alerting me instead of having accidents. I’m learning his cues, and man am I finding him much quicker on the uptake that any large dog I’ve had. Not sure of it’s my back of knowledge gained from experience or that my big dogs were just more dopey, or pushy and slower to submit to behavior modification 😂 This guy, if I didn’t know understand dog behavior and body language and how to train a dog, would probably run rings around me 🤣

I have a chihuahua that I got from the shelter. She loves cheese but that doesn’t matter. It’s been months now and she won’t keep up with the behavior. Sometimes if she doesn’t feel like it, she won’t even care about the cheese. She won’t stop submissive urinating sporadically, and she hates the leash.

I think I have the same dog mine is a gold meagle, minpin-beagle mix even has the slight black hair on the back though her chest is white yours looks like a purebred minpin I think it's smaller than mine without the beagle. Anyway on my FIRST TRY I put it down between her paws slightly to the side and Sunny went down as I said down by the time she was down I couldn't believe how perfect that first try went! Second and third time I gave her a treat she only kneeled down a bit. 4th time she went down AGAIN I gave her 2 treats. 5th time got too excited did not go down and I finally remove the treat, 6th time AGAIN she went down!!! I'm doing this over and over like 10 times now and she's went down I'm losing count now. This actually motivates me to train my dog more as I've tried various Ceasar tricks in the past and could not get my dog to do anything... down she does I don't know why but I'm going to try paw again now too thank you.
edit: Just saw that the breeds are in the top comment, not the description. I would have never guessed poodle was in the mix of breeds but chihuahua & dachshund I can see it's still cute AF.

Thank you for these videos. Can you make different videos about socializing puppies to different dogs and surroundings? :) I'm sure a lot of owners don't properly do it.

Hey Zak... you don't have to answer if you don't want to, but I recently went to PetCo and talked to a dog trainer about how to become one when I'm older and all that stuff.. so we started talking and he said something about Cesar Millan abusing dogs? I mean, I don't think he uses positive reinforcement but if you could it would be appreciative if you could give me your opinions on him? Thanks~

You've just had your first encounter with the politics in the world of dog training. One thing all dog trainers are great at is arguing about methods/tools etc. The best advice is to ignore the politics and find your own methods. Start off with clicker training/purely positive and get really good at it. Experience is everything and the more dogs you get your hands on the better you will be. Spend a few years and a few hundred dogs just using markers (clicker/voice etc) and rewards and then learn how to properly layer punishment and the use of aversives. Check out the IACP and Tyler Muto (chairman) and what he's currently advocating for within the industry. The more methods you learn to use, the more flexible you will be and the more dogs you will be able to help.
Cesar Millan has stepped into what could be called abuse. One particular dog - "Holly" (lab) is a great example of really bad training. Cesar really messed up (and got bitten in the process). In the early days he definitely used to flatten dogs and was way too heavy handed and probably ruined a number of dogs, but modern day Cesar is probably one of the least abusive guys out there.
The only thing that makes Cesar "special" is his ability to read dogs.
I've seen Cesar trying to lure and use food rewards and it's clear he's only a beginner. He does say "good boy" a lot on the show.
Look up people like Michael Ellis (legend in dog sports), Ivan Balabanov (generally regarded as the best trainer in the world), Tyler Muto (the "professor"), Chad Mackin (pressure/release guy), Jay Jack (rehabs the nastiest bully breeds using game play), Aimee Sadler (expert in dog socialisation of shelter dogs).
The world of dog training is thriving at the moment, with new ideas and methods being tried out with great success (look up Aimee Sadler - she's one amazing woman helping thousands of dogs in a big way). If you're OBSESSED with dogs and training them and always willing to learn and improve, it's a great career.

I would love to hear your opinion on working with different dog types - like working dogs vs companion dogs :)
I have 2 French bulldogs and in my experience they can be a little harder to get interested and I need a REALLY great treat to get them to work with me - they will NEVER just work for kibble :)

My dog is almost 3 years old, and I admit that when she was younger she wasn't really socialized. She is scared of strangers to the point she bit the vet tech during her check up and I have also noticed she is particularly afraid of kids, any way to help?

Hi I would love some advice on how to toilet train my 5 month old chihuahua, we live in the uk so it's very very cold and it rains a lot so taking him out every hour doesn't work he does not like the chill. Only manage to do 1 20minute walk a day and he doesn't even like that. Help would be much appreciated,he is using puppy mats at the moment.

That's exactly why I hate when people say that chihuahuas are agressive. They're not agressive by nature, it's just because their owners don't raise them as dogs, they have a feeling they need to protect these small creatures and they tolerate a lot of thing these small dogs do. Being an overprotective and very benevolent owner is never good, even small dogs deserve to have a fulfilling dog life. I like the way you're raising awarness about such things (training small dogs, that is).

I have a chihuahua mix that goes nuts (biting to hurt) when we try to put clothes on her. Can you address this issue in a video? She also doesn’t let us put a muzzle on her 😞

Why not just not dress your dog up? If you have to for cold weather etc then you need to do counter conditioning, but some dogs may never be happy being dressed up and trying to bite is very concerning and a strong indicator that he really isnt comfortable and you should just stop putting him through the stress... As for the muzzle you need to muzzle train, you cant just put it on them... go slow, at the dogs pace and make sure they are comfortable with each step before you move on, start out with the muzzle on the floor and reward for any interest, then place food inside the muzzle to encourage them to put their nose in, then start holding it and hold food through the gaps envouraging them to keep their nose in a tiny bit longer each time, then you can slowly start fastening it, keep it on for very short periods at first and reward heavily and with time they will be totally happy to wear it... also make sure you are using a basket muzzle which Is sized properly, not a fabric one as they should be able to pant, bark, drink and eat with it on
